Chapter 37 A Headache
Sienna returned to her lodgings with a strange sense of unease.
She saw Sam near the dormitory entrance; the girl was wrapped in a pile of blankets and looked at everyone who came in with a suspicious gaze.
This made Sienna a little nervous, but she made it back to her room without incident.
She... had originally thought the room would be a mess.
But instead, they found Teddy sitting on the bed, rhythmically swinging her legs while reading her red book.
Meanwhile, her newly summoned sister Athena was nestled in Sienna's favorite chair, with a stack of Sienna's textbooks piled on the table next to her.
"Big Sister Sienna!" Athena called out joyfully.
Teddy lay on the bed, tilting his head back slightly, but his body didn't move. "Hey, boss."
Sienna closed the door behind her, smiled at the two of them, and said, "Hello, how was your morning?"
"It's alright, we're very quiet. We need another computer when you're not here so we can watch something."
For the first time in her life, Sienna considered the benefits of setting parental controls on her computer.
"We'll see when the time comes. Maybe I can find a used laptop somewhere. Until then, you can use mine sometimes."
"Okay."
Athena broke free from her pile of "packages".
"So, big sister, are we going to do something villainous today?"
"Uh."
“No,” Teddy replied, “the boss has a lot more to worry about than being a villain. She has to fight against those in power.”
“Well, not really,” Sienna said. “I… well, I don’t really like doing the things villains do. I’d much rather people see me, and us, as heroes.”
“Hmph,” Athena scoffed, “Well, I believe we can do something about it. It will be a lot of work, but I’m sure we can do it.”
She nodded, and Sienna felt that there seemed to be a crucial misunderstanding, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what that misunderstanding was or how it came about.
“Well,” she said, “I think we have a few things to do today that require wearing masks, and we need to go buy some food.”
Perhaps we could go to the thrift store again and buy a microwave or something, so we can cook something at home.
"What are we going to eat?" Teddy asked.
"Well, I'll just cook some noodles or something," Sienna replied.
She felt a little guilty; it was her responsibility to make sure Teddy and Athena ate well, but she really didn't have the means to prepare proper food for them.
“We can also buy some clothes for Athena. I don’t think your clothes suit her, Teddy.”
"That's great. Can we stop by the bookstore while we're at it?"
"Oh, of course. I remember there's a used bookstore nearby. New books might be beyond our budget, but buying some used books shouldn't be a problem."
"That's good."
Sienna smiled at her... sisters again, then sighed, putting her bag down as she did so. "I need to make a call. Can you two, uh, be quiet for a few minutes?"
Athena nodded seriously, while Teddy lazily gave a thumbs up.
Sienna fiddled with her phone for a while.
She really didn't want to make this necessary call, but alas, she had no choice but to.
Procrastination is always incredibly tempting, but it never ends well.
She unlocked her phone and stared at the twenty-odd text messages Mel had sent her.
Mel: Hey.
Mel: Hey!
Mel: You just caught that guy named H?
Mel: Oh?
Mel: Kid, answer me!
Mel: Oh my god, I just watched the video.
Mel: You're on the news again.
Mel: Well done!
Mel: Did you get that hard drive?
Mel: Oh, uh...
Mel: That's not what I meant.
Mel: I'm sorry.
Mel: Is Little Bear alright?
Mel: There's a camera in the lobby.
Mel: I'm trying to put some pressure on this, but I don't have that much power.
Mel: Hey?
Mel: Are you still alive?
Mel: Oh?
Mel: Call me back.
Sienna hesitated for a moment, her thumb hovering over the text messages for a long time, until the screen went black.
She sighed, unlocked the screen again, tapped a few times, and dialed a number.
She held the phone to her ear, waiting until she heard the click of someone answering. "Hello—hello?"
She held a sliver of hope that she had dialed the wrong number.
“Hey!” Meraton’s voice came through. “Wait a minute. Give me a second.”
Then came a rustling sound, and Sienna heard Melaton telling someone that it was a very important call and she had to answer it.
“Hmm?” Sienna asked.
“Alright,” Meraton replied, “no one else is listening.”
“Nobody else is watching, is there?” Sienna said.
"what?"
"N-nothing, uh, would you like to... talk?"
“Did I want to? Of course I did, girl,” Meraton said, her voice rising a little. “What were you thinking? I know the final result was pretty good, but… good heavens, you’re still a newbie.”
Homi might be just a small fry, but that doesn't mean you can charge in alone. And don't think it's safe just because you're with a fourteen-year-old.
“I’m sorry,” Sienna said, “I…he had that hard drive.”
Meraton sighed into the phone. "Well, okay. Did you get the hard drive?"
"harddisk?"
Meraton chuckled. "I'm not asking a common-sense question. We both know you don't have that thing. Yes, that hard drive."
“I destroyed it,” Sienna said.
"How was it destroyed?"
"Well, we burned it first, then smashed it a few times, but it was quite difficult to smash, so I just threw it in the river. Do you think that's enough?"
Meraton snorted. "I think that should be enough, right? Is it a solid-state drive? Or one of those old-fashioned hard drives with a disk? Mechanical hard drives are much more fragile. But... well, lighting a fire and throwing it into the river should do the trick."
“Oh, okay, so… is that all?” Sienna asked. “Are we safe now?”
Melanie took a while to respond, which didn't reassure Sienna at all. "Hmm, I think so."
“Oh, that’s great,” Sienna said. This is really good.
Actually, it's absolutely fantastic.
She can now resume her normal life, striving again towards the gray moral values she pursues, while also figuring out how to take care of the sisters she has summoned.
Everything is going in the right direction.
"Hey kid, I think I might have a job that suits you."
Sienna's initial enthusiasm vanished instantly. "One, one job?"
"Yes. It's not a big deal, but it might be helpful to you."
Your business has already made a significant start. If you have a reliable person to manage it, even if it's just in your local area, you can make a name for yourself.
“I don’t think I want to do this,” Sienna said.
"No, this is good for you. How about we have lunch together and I'll tell you everything. I'll send you the address. Don't worry, it's on me."
"What? No need, no need, really no need..." Sienna was only halfway through her sentence when she heard the dial tone; the other party had already hung up.
She put down her phone and saw the screen light up, displaying a text message with an address and time. She couldn't help but glare at the phone.
"Are you alright, Sister Sienna?" Athena asked.
“I’m fine,” Sienna lied, though at least it was a small lie this time. “I’m fine. So, are you two ready to go? The shops close at five, so we need to get going if we want to have time to see what they have.”
Teddy rolled off the bed, grumbling, and Athena jumped off the chair.
“We can also buy some food while we’re at it,” Sienna added. This made Teddy’s steps lighter.
If only she could understand all the issues as easily as her sisters.
