Chapter 13 Volunteer Service
It's actually quite easy to find a place where you can do volunteer work.
Sienna's first stop was a thrift store, not only to see if they needed help, but also to buy some necessities for Teddy.
Several hoodies, along with some shirts, shorts, and pajamas, were displayed prominently.
Teddy spotted a hoodie with a bear pattern on the front and immediately grabbed it, even though it was a men's size and almost four sizes too big.
Sienna even found a few blankets and a patched-up air mattress, but since it was cheaper than buying a new one, she bought them all.
She paced back and forth for a while before finally mustering the courage to ask the kind old lady behind the counter if she needed any help.
As a result, the secondhand stores were doing quite well, but the soup kitchens a few blocks away usually had some of their staff as students, many of whom had already graduated.
Sienna paid the money, expressing her gratitude to the old lady for giving her a discount because of "such a kind single mother," and then walked out of the store with a flushed face.
Along the way, Teddy asked some very inappropriate questions loudly until they got back to the dormitory.
The soup kitchen was a small building outside the campus, located in an old office building with several dilapidated apartments upstairs.
The people waiting for their meals there were surprisingly young.
They weren't the impoverished people Sienna had imagined, but rather some students who might be living below the poverty line.
Finding the person in charge is easy.
Mr. Lancaster was a burly, outgoing man with a voice like a foghorn (a loud horn), and his personality matched his voice perfectly.
When Sienna, who was almost out of breath, asked him if he needed help.
He glanced at her, then looked Teddy up and down, who was wearing a new hoodie that looked baggy, and then burst out laughing, "Girl! We always need help!"
Sienna and Teddy were taken to a back room where several other volunteers were doing preparations.
Mr. Lancaster thought Sienna was too pretty and Teddy was too small to be in the front dealing with those "rough men," so he arranged for them to wash dishes in the back.
Sienna thought Teddy would complain, but Teddy enthusiastically started wiping the dishes, saying, "I want to do my part to help my comrades."
She said just that, and Sienna decided not to be picky about the good intentions.
For some reason, washing dishes... is surprisingly enjoyable.
The back room of the soup kitchen was a bit dark, the tiles were old and cracked, and the water had to be turned off every few minutes so that the hot water tank at the back could reheat it, but it was very clean.
This place smells like the kitchen in her house during the time when her mother was into cooking shows.
The other volunteers would chat with each other for a bit, but they didn't force Sienna to participate in the conversation, which pleased her greatly.
The atmosphere here was great; in the time it took her to wash dozens of dishes, it satisfied all her social needs for the year.
She heard that a woman named Abigail was pregnant again, and she was very proud of it; a villain with a funny name, "Broccoli," turned into some kind of sky pirate; and the local weaving group recently lost a member due to infighting.
These things are all very interesting and engaging, and she doesn't have to say a word except for having Teddy take out the trash for her.
About an hour later, Sienna noticed that the water in the rinsing basin had become a little dirty. She turned off the tap and took a deep breath.
“Miss?” Sienna mustered her courage and asked a woman who seemed friendly and was cutting carrots.
"Hmm? What's wrong, darling?" the woman asked, her eyes still fixed on the knife that was slicing vegetables like a machine gun.
"This dirty water, um, can I just pour it down the drain..." bones and vegetables
The woman stopped, looked up for a moment, and saw that Sienna's bucket of water still contained bones and vegetables. "It doesn't seem to be just soapy water? Hmm... take it to the alley behind."
There's a large, old drain next to the trash can; dumping bones and vegetables in it won't cause any harm.
“Oh, okay.” Sienna hurried back to the sink and began to lift the heavy, square bucket of dirty water.
"Boss, what are you doing?" Teddy asked.
“Just put this in the back, we’ll be right back,” Sienna said through gritted teeth. Her arms had very little muscle, so the movement was a little difficult.
Sienna staggered past the kitchen staff carrying the bucket of soapy water, who all carefully made way for her. Then she headed for the back door, put down the bucket, and went to open it.
The back alley was somewhat like a kitchen, old and dilapidated, but still relatively clean.
The smell coming from the two trash cans next to her was a bit strong, but she thought it was just the rotten vegetables and meat thrown in there, nothing serious except for the stench.
Sienna had just seen the drain she might need.
Luckily I saw it; it would have been too embarrassing to go back and ask for more detailed instructions.
At that moment, a scream from the other end of the alley forced Sienna to turn around.
A man ran toward her, and she felt that this person would stand out in any crowd.
He was dressed in what looked like a Renaissance actor's costume.
A deep red long coat fluttered behind him, and strange trousers that reached his calves revealed his white stockings. He wore a bicorn hat, and beneath the hat was a dark green mask that resembled a turban.
Above his head, a name floated, like a warning to all who wanted to see it.
【Aleja Iakta】
[Rogue, Level 1]
Sienna gasped, and staggered back a few steps as the man—no, the villain—rushed toward her.
However, it wasn't him who screamed, but the two people chasing after him at full speed.
【silver fox】
[Doing good deeds, Level 3]
[Charming Lady]
[Defender, Level 1]
Sienna held her breath when she saw that it wasn't one, but two heroes walking towards her along the alley.
She even recognized one of them.
Silver Fox is an old hero, and as he gets older, he changes his name to match his aging body.
He must possess some kind of superhuman strength, capable of throwing cars, dodging bullets, and maintaining his perfectly styled dark gray hair.
Every bottle of men's shampoo in her parents' bathroom had his silver fox-shaped mask on it.
Another hero... is a young woman wearing a denim jacket and a glittering mask on her face, which is her only attire.
Sienna immediately understood. "Yesebel?" she whispered, and then the villain rushed in front of her.
She screamed, ducked forward to avoid the blow, and closed her eyes, expecting to be hit, but she wasn't.
Instead, Aleya, Iakta snatched the bucket from her hand and ran away laughing loudly.
"Thank you, ma'am!" he said, disappearing into the pile of trash cans some distance away.
Gallons of soapy water spilled on the floor, wetting the front of her skirt, which became warm and damp, with bubbles spreading in front of her.
These two heroes, as if they had stepped out of a badly plotted comedy, stepped in soapy water and lost their balance.
Although Silver Fox was old, his spinning movements were still quite elegant. He then fell to the side and rolled once on the dirty ground.
His silver outfit was a little dirty, but he immediately stood up.
A charming lady, however, is not so elegant.
She screamed and fell to the ground, kicking her legs and flailing her arms, trying to turn the fall into a roll.
She had succeeded in part; in the end, she kicked Silver Fox's leg, ending her tumble.
Sienna's eyes widened, her arm still outstretched to grab the boiling bucket of water. Her brain screamed and restarted, then she turned and ran back into the house.
When these masked people start fighting, it's not only a wise move, but she also has a good reason not to be stopped.
That's why Sienna froze when Yezebel yelled, "Hey, you! Stop!"
She stood ramrod straight, her eyes gazing longingly at the back door of the soup kitchen.
“Damn it,” Silver Fox said.
His voice was a deep baritone, and it was probably this voice that convinced her mother to buy the shampoo he endorsed for her father.
"This guy is cunning, I have to admit that."
"Uh, is this a pun, old man?"
Silver Fox snorted, "I have to teach you all about every aspect of this business. A little joking around is also important."
A hand rested on Sienna's shoulder. "Miss, may we ask you a few questions?"
