All-around teacher at the magic academy
Chapter 38 Competition
Dong dong dong
A steady knock echoed in the quiet corridor.
"Please come in," a deep, powerful voice responded.
Pushing open the door, Leon looked at the familiar and dignified figure sitting behind the desk and respectfully greeted, "Dean, hello."
“Oh, it’s Professor Leon,” the dean looked up and greeted the visitor at the door with a gentle gaze. “Perfect timing, I also have something to discuss with you.”
Leon was slightly taken aback, a hint of curiosity rising in his heart. He wondered what the dean would need to discuss with him. Could it be about adjusting his salary? He remembered the dean mentioning before that his monthly salary was 1.5 pounds, and that if he performed exceptionally well, his salary could potentially double.
“Professor Leon,” the dean began, explaining the purpose of their visit, “your classes have been very well received lately, and the students really enjoy them. Therefore, after discussion, the college administration has decided to add one more class per week. Would that be convenient for you?”
Leon answered almost without hesitation, "Of course, Dean. I would be delighted."
Seeing Leon's quick agreement, the dean continued, "In that case, your salary will also be adjusted accordingly. From now on, your monthly salary will be increased to 3 pounds, starting this week. What do you think?"
Leon was delighted and responded politely and sincerely, "Thank you for your generosity, Dean. I am very satisfied with this arrangement." Leon treated the man with courtesy, his tone revealing his sincerity.
“Very well, then, Professor Leon, what brings you here?” the dean asked gently.
Leon nodded slightly, and said somewhat awkwardly, "Actually, I have a rather inappropriate request."
"Please speak freely," the dean encouraged.
Leon then laid out his request. He hoped to arrange accommodation for Ilya within the academy and offered to pay for it monthly.
More importantly, he hoped to arrange for Ilya to study at St. Peter's College. Although he knew this request might be difficult to accept, he decided to try anyway. He was willing to do his best to meet any conditions.
After listening, the dean pondered for a moment, then replied, "Providing accommodation is not a big problem. There are plenty of empty rooms in the college, and you don't need to pay for accommodation. As for the matter of enrollment, that's not something I can decide alone; I need to discuss it with my colleagues on the admissions committee."
“Thank you very much, Dean.” Leon expressed his gratitude, while also understanding that the Dean alone could not make decisions on the affairs of the academy.
“However, Professor Leon, if you can make a significant contribution to the academy, I believe no one else will object, and her admission problem will be easily solved,” the dean then offered a suggestion.
"Oh?" Leon's eyes lit up, not expecting such a turn of events. He immediately asked, "May I ask how I can contribute to the academy?"
“It’s not complicated,” the dean explained. “Every three years, several renowned academies in the Kingdom of Audris jointly host a friendship exchange meeting.”
Although nominally an exchange meeting, it's actually a competition showcasing the strengths of each college. We will organize various competitions for students. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of each college.
Leon frowned slightly, pondering to himself, what does the students' competition have to do with him? Does he have to take the students' place and participate?
The dean seemed to sense Leon's confusion and added, "Of course, these exchange activities are not only for students; teachers will also participate in a series of competitions."
Leon immediately understood what the dean meant. He guessed that he might need to represent St. Peter's College in these competitions among the teachers and achieve excellent results in order to be considered as having made a significant contribution to the college.
“Our college has consistently achieved satisfactory results in both the student and faculty competitions. I believe that as long as Professor Leon can maintain a certain ranking for the college in the faculty competition, no one else will have any objections,” the dean further explained.
"So, specifically, what kind of ranking do I need to keep?" Leon asked curiously.
"The top three." The dean's answer made Leon gasp. Just as he had expected, the task was not easy.
In the Kingdom of Audris, numerous magic academies stand side by side, with nearly ten comparable in strength to St. Peter's Academy. To stand out in such fierce competition and secure a top-three ranking is, one can only imagine, an incredibly difficult task.
“I can give it a try.” Leon didn’t back down; he couldn’t refuse the dean’s offer. It wasn’t just about Ilya’s chance to enroll, but also because as a member of St. Peter’s Academy, receiving care from the dean and his colleagues, he felt it was his responsibility to contribute to the academy.
“Very good. You can have Ilya serve as your teaching assistant for a while, so she can learn from you for a period of time. This will also help her adapt to life at the academy better.” The dean offered a compromise.
"Okay, thank you, Dean. I'll take my leave now." Leon nodded in agreement and then prepared to leave.
"Okay, Professor Leon, best of luck." The dean watched Leon leave, affirming his performance.
...
After two days of careful treatment, Ilya's condition has stabilized significantly, and she looks much better than when Leon first met her.
This put Leon's mind at ease. It seemed that she was indeed cursed, and he believed that Ilya would be able to return to normal in the near future.
"Brother Leon." Ilya rushed over to help when she saw Leon return with the newly bought food.
“No need.” Leon waved his hand gently, indicating that she didn’t need to go to the trouble.
“I’ve already spoken with the dean, and we’ll arrange a new place for you soon.” Leon put down the food and continued, “You’re feeling much better now. You can walk around the academy a little, but don’t stay up too long.”
"Mmm," Ilya responded, but seemed somewhat sullen.
"What's wrong?" Leon noticed her mood and asked with concern.
"Um, may I go see my brother?" Ilya asked cautiously in a low voice.
“Of course.” Leon agreed to her request without hesitation.
Upon hearing Leon's reply, Ilya's face immediately lit up with a smile, and his mood seemed to brighten as well.
Afterwards, the two packed up quickly and prepared to head to the place where Philip was buried.
Philip's funeral was arranged by the captain, and he was buried alongside the other fallen law enforcement officers. Leon had been there once; it was a peaceful and beautiful place, and at least he wouldn't feel alone.
Leon noticed that Ilya had specially worn her new dress today, and a pang of sadness welled up in his heart.
