Has the killer made another move?

As soon as Leon stepped into the law enforcement division, he heard his colleagues discussing a topic that seemed to be a raid on law enforcement officers on their way back.

“Yes, he’s a law enforcement officer, Luca, I know him,” Philippe explained, noticing Leon’s confusion.

“That Luca always liked to show off his wife and daughter in front of everyone, making the whole law enforcement team aware of him,” Philip added.

"However, he was also fortunate in a way. As soon as he encountered the attackers, he chose to run away without even thinking of resisting," Philip joked.

"Knowing he was outmatched, choosing to flee was indeed a wise move." Leon thought Luca's approach made a lot of sense.

"Alas, it's a pity they still managed to escape. We still haven't gotten any valuable clues," Philip sighed, shaking his head.

“It’s certainly a pity, but at least we know the other side is still in the city, attempting to target lone law enforcement officers.” Leon pondered for a moment, then finally offered Philip some words of comfort.

“After this incident, Luca may choose to retire from law enforcement. It’s good that he’s retiring; he has a wife and daughter to take care of, and he can’t continue living such a dangerous life.”

“But this means other law enforcement officers will have to bear more pressure.” Philip patted his backside, said goodbye, and went to his night watch post.

Leon watched his retreating figure, pondered for a moment, and then left as well.

.....

The following day, Leon stepped into the Enforcers' Division again.

After careful consideration, he decided to discuss adjusting his work schedule with the team leader. This was a decision he made after weighing various factors.

On the one hand, the continuous night shifts left him feeling exhausted, and he couldn't rest until after midnight every night; on the other hand, the night shift pay was just a drop in the bucket for him, and last week's salary was completely used up in just two days over the weekend. He realized that this situation had to change, and he needed to save more money for any possible emergencies.

I still vividly remember the time I went shopping with Teacher Lian. Just imagine how embarrassing it would be if I had another chance like that and I didn't have enough money to pay!

The mere thought of it made him extremely embarrassed, as if he could carve a three-bedroom apartment out of the floor.

Standing in front of the captain's office, Leon hesitated for only a moment before knocking. Before he could hear a response from inside, the door opened, and a colleague came out.

"Captain, I'll head back now. I'm really sorry." The man apologized as he prepared to leave.

"It's alright, go home and spend some time with your family." Captain Max didn't blame him, but instead gently comforted him.

"Thank you, Captain," the man replied gratefully, then turned and left.

Upon seeing this, Leon politely nodded to the other party, who nodded in response.

...

“It’s Leon.” Captain Max sat behind his desk, looking up at Leon in the doorway, his voice revealing barely suppressed exhaustion.

"What brings you here so soon?" He then lit a cigarette, leaned back in his chair, and puffed out smoke.

Leon walked into the office, closing the door behind him. He noticed that Max looked even more haggard than before, and felt a pang of sadness.

"Take a break, Captain," Leon couldn't help but remind him. He was genuinely worried that if things continued like this, he would eventually collapse from exhaustion.

"I want to rest too, but there's just too much to do, I can't keep up at all." Max sighed and took another deep drag on his cigarette.

Leon didn't know what to say to comfort him; what could he do?

"Who was that just now?" He didn't immediately state his purpose, but instead brought up the person who had just left.

“Luca, you’re here to resign.” Max’s emotions didn’t show any significant fluctuation, suggesting that he had already prepared for this.

Leon was surprised that Philippe had actually guessed right. Indeed, if he were in Philippe's shoes, he probably would have quit long ago.

"Leon, what about you? You didn't come here to resign this time either, did you?" Max stared at Leon, then turned his head away.

Leon chuckled awkwardly and said embarrassedly, "Not really. You know my situation, Captain. I came to the Enforcer Division part-time to earn more money. Even though the Night Watchman's salary is relatively good, it's still a drop in the bucket for me. So I'm thinking of adjusting it to see if I can switch to working part-time as an Enforcer during the day, meaning I'll only come when there are specific missions."

Leon wasn't speaking without reason; he knew that certain missions carried high bounties, such as the assassination attempt, for which law enforcement had offered a 25-pound reward. Leon felt that if he could resolve this matter, he wouldn't have to worry about money for the time being.

Leon's words noticeably improved Max's mood. He breathed a sigh of relief; they couldn't afford any more bad news. Not only him, but all the law enforcement personnel were exhausted, both physically and mentally.

"Let me make this clear, Captain, I cannot participate in every mission. My primary identity is that of a teacher, and only secondarily a law enforcer." Leon felt it necessary to remind his captain of his position once again.

“I know that being a law enforcement officer is just a part-time job for you.” Captain Max expressed his understanding, feeling that this matter was not important, and he knew in his heart that Leon’s teaching work was not heavy.

However, Leon had a different perspective; he could use this identity as a reason to refuse some tasks he didn't want to take on.

"Well then, I'll take my leave now, Captain. Please take good care of yourself. The Enforcers Division still needs your leadership." Before leaving, Leon reminded Max again with concern.

Max simply nodded slightly to indicate that he had heard Leon's words, then his gaze drifted to the window as he fell into deep thought.

Leon gently closed the office door, glanced back at the captain, shook his head helplessly, but said nothing more before turning and leaving.

He walked out of the law enforcement building with a heavy heart, his gaze sweeping over the scenery on both sides of the street, feeling a sense of oppression. Since arriving in this city and coming into contact with the people in the law enforcement branch, he had realized that behind this seemingly glamorous city lay the hard work and struggle of countless law enforcement officers. Few could truly understand their difficulties, and if Leon hadn't had contact with them, he wouldn't have felt so deeply.

Indeed, the less you know and the less you get involved, the less tiring life will feel.

Leon couldn't help but recall his childhood, a time of carefree days when he didn't need to think things through and simply enjoyed eating and playing every day, which was enough to satisfy him.

He shook his head gently again; those simple and beautiful times were gone forever.
