Chapter 182 Confession
The interior of the MasterCard office remains as simple as ever.
On this slightly gloomy afternoon, four young figures sat around an old wooden table, the atmosphere so oppressive it was almost suffocating.
Rhine leaned back in his chair, staring blankly at the ceiling.
His brow was furrowed, as if he were pondering some important question.
His fingers tapped unconsciously on the edge of the table, making a rhythmic sound that broke the silence of the room.
Liz held a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold in both hands, her head bowed in silence.
Her eyes were unfocused, as if she were recalling a fragment of the past. The lip print left on the rim of the coffee cup was a reflection of her complex emotions at that moment.
Tommy and Kirby, this usually playful duo, were not laughing and joking around as usual today.
Koby was engrossed in doodling in a worn-out notebook, while Tommy fiddled with a small trinket on the table; both of them seemed preoccupied.
In this silence, time ticked by, second by second.
Suddenly, the office door creaked open, and a blast of fresh air rushed in, breaking the stuffiness inside.
As Mrs. Hills stepped into the doorway of the All-Knowing Office, her eyes immediately fell on the four people sitting there.
Her brows furrowed slightly involuntarily, and an ominous premonition welled up in her heart.
For the past few days, a heavy stone has been pressing on her heart, making it hard for her to breathe.
Her husband, the man who had once doted on her, had become increasingly strange in recent months.
Almost every night, he would find an excuse to go out, but yesterday, she received a message asking her to come to the All-Knowing Office.
Mrs. Hills took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down.
She thought she was ready to make the vixen who seduced her husband pay the price without hesitation once she found her.
However, when the truth was right before her eyes, she felt an unprecedented fear.
Her steps became heavy, each step feeling like she was walking into an unknown abyss.
She was afraid not only of her husband's betrayal, but also of the truth that might be revealed.
She was filled with conflicting emotions. On the one hand, she wanted to protect her dignity and her family; on the other hand, she was afraid that if she exposed her husband's true colors, he would choose to abandon her.
Mrs. Hills never considered divorce. She was used to her affluent life and her husband's doting affection.
Even though his heart may no longer be with her, she is still unwilling to give up the marriage.
She was afraid that once her husband found out she was being investigated, he would dump her without hesitation, and she would lose everything.
A wave of regret washed over her; she regretted choosing to investigate the matter in the first place.
If she can pretend that she knows nothing, can she continue to maintain the peace of this family?
Mrs. Hills felt her palms begin to sweat, her heart raced, and she was afraid to face the impending storm, afraid that her world would be turned upside down.
When the four men saw Mrs. Hills enter the office, they immediately straightened their backs and turned their gazes toward the door.
Mrs. Hills's transformation after only a few days apart surprised them all.
Her face looked somewhat pale. Although her makeup was still exquisite, the fine wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and the undisguised fatigue revealed her inner unease and anxiety.
“Please have a seat, Mrs. Hills.”
Rhine stood up, greeted him politely, and pulled out a chair that had been prepared for him.
Mrs. Hills sat down gently, her movements somewhat stiff.
Her gaze swept over the four men, finally settling on Rhine's face. She asked impatiently, "How's your investigation going?"
“Please allow me to ask you a question first,” Rhine said calmly, his voice carrying an undeniable firmness.
Mrs. Hills frowned slightly, clearly displeased with the way the question was asked, but she suppressed her dissatisfaction, nodded, and replied, "Go ahead and ask."
"Why do you think your husband, Earl Hills, is having an affair?" Rhine asked directly.
This statement was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, instantly creating ripples.
Mrs. Hills frowned, a hint of confusion and anger flashing in her eyes: "What do you mean? Isn't this obvious? Didn't I hire you precisely to prove this point?"
Her voice trembled slightly, clearly indicating that the question had touched a sensitive spot in her heart.
She gripped her bag tightly, trying to remain calm, but her eyes betrayed her inner turmoil.
“It is like this, Mrs. Hills,” Rhine began to explain, trying to keep his tone gentle, “Based on our investigation over the past few days, we have found that although your husband goes out every night, his whereabouts do not point to anything that would cause you any infidelity. In other words, he is not seeing other women.”
Mrs. Hills frowned, her lips parted slightly as if she wanted to retort, but she held back and said coldly, "No? Impossible! Then why does he go out every night?"
She had barely finished speaking when she seemed to realize something. Her expression turned complicated, and she hesitated before saying, "Could it be that he's looking for a man?"
Mrs. Hills' face paled slightly; she felt that her guess was probably correct.
The thought made her feel nauseous. She realized that it was no wonder her husband had been unwilling to be intimate with her lately; his tastes had changed.
When the four men heard Mrs. Hills's guess, they were all taken aback.
A hint of embarrassment appeared on their faces; clearly, this was a direction they hadn't considered.
Tommy and Coby exchanged a glance, while Liz gently bit her lower lip.
“It’s not what you think,” Rhine quickly interrupted Mrs. Hills’s speculation.
“Earl Hills goes out every night, but he only goes to church; he doesn’t do anything else there,” Rhine said firmly.
“Huh? A church?” Mrs. Hills’s face showed doubt and surprise. She had clearly not expected this answer. “Are you sure you’re not trying to fool me? This sounds a bit unbelievable.”
“How could we possibly fool you, Mrs. Hills?”
Rhine said seriously, patting his chest, "I guarantee with the reputation of the Mastermind firm that our investigation results are true."
Mrs. Hills frowned even more deeply, her expression filled with confusion and bewilderment.
She couldn't understand why her husband would go to church every night instead of doing what she suspected.
