All-around teacher at the magic academy
Chapter 16 A Fulfilling Weekend
Leon opened his eyes, feeling somewhat unwell. He recalled the entire day of yesterday; although he hadn't been busy during the day, he didn't seem to have gotten enough rest.
As a temporary worker, Leon's work was not strictly regulated; his salary was paid daily, and he did not have to work on weekends.
Today, he didn't need to do his night watch. With a six-day work week and one-day rest schedule, Leon felt less like a part-time night watchman and more like a full-time one. For several nights in a row, he hadn't fallen asleep until after midnight, resulting in severe sleep deprivation, which his body was finding difficult to adjust to.
Leon realized that if things continued like this, his body would eventually give out. He needed to adjust his schedule and ensure he got enough rest to prevent health problems from arising.
Leon thought of Philippe, his colleague who worked full-time during the day and insisted on staying out all night. Leon was genuinely curious about how he managed to keep it up. He had a certain respect for Philippe because he seemed to have almost no negative emotions; he always appeared so optimistic and cheerful.
Leon had never met Philippe's sister, and he felt he should perhaps visit her sometime, since they were colleagues and he had a good relationship with Philippe, often receiving help from him.
He glanced at the time; it was 10:09 AM. He calculated that he had slept for about 8 hours, which should be enough to not affect his mental state today.
However, the thought that he had nothing concrete to do after getting up made his initial enthusiasm wane again. Leon felt a strange emptiness and didn't know how to pass this idle day.
"Anyway, let's wash up first."
Leon thought to himself, then rolled out of bed. He habitually skipped breakfast, because having mornings was a rare treat for him. Staying up until midnight every night meant he usually didn't get up too early the next day.
Leon reviewed his early rising record for the week and found that he had woken up early less than half the time. This lifestyle meant he almost never had the chance to sit down and enjoy a quiet breakfast.
dong dong dong.
Leon, who was washing up, heard a gentle knock on the door. He quickly finished and went to open it. As soon as the door opened, a head of pink hair came into view. He was slightly taken aback, then smiled and asked, "Teacher Leon, is there something you need?"
With her hands behind her back and a smile on her face, Ms. Leon said, "Mr. Leon, are you free today? Would you like to go shopping together?"
Leon was pleasantly surprised; he had been wondering how to kill time. "I happen to have nothing to do anyway."
“That’s wonderful,” said Ms. Lian happily.
Leon secretly rejoiced that he had already finished washing up, otherwise he would have had to keep Professor Lian waiting. In his opinion, making a woman wait was not gentlemanly behavior, and he always tried his best to avoid such impolite actions.
.....
Leon and Lian strolled together through the streets of Barton City, chatting as they walked. "Professor Lian, did you go home yesterday? I knocked on your door this morning, but you weren't home."
“Oh, so you were looking for me yesterday,” Teacher Lian replied.
“Yes, I bought some ingredients yesterday to cook at home. I felt too lonely by myself, so I wanted to invite you to my house for dinner. However, I found that you weren’t here,” Leon explained.
“I’m so sorry, I went to visit a friend yesterday and didn’t get back until last night. Would it be convenient for us to have dinner together today? I’d really like to try Teacher Leon’s cooking,” Teacher Lian asked apologetically.
“Of course, we can go buy some more food,” Leon suggested.
“Okay, that’s fine. I also need to buy some things.” Teacher Lian agreed to Leon’s suggestion, and the two of them went to the purchasing department to buy the ingredients needed for lunch.
Leon and Mr. Lian chatted and laughed as they walked toward the store. While selecting items, he suddenly realized that his wallet wasn't very full, and he couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
Fortunately, they didn't buy much in the end, and Ms. Lean paid for all her own items. Even so, after settling the bill, Leon only had 2 rubles and 30 pence left in his pocket. Leon couldn't help but feel extremely poor, and a sense of frustration welled up inside him as he watched Ms. Lean's retreating figure.
He felt he was already trying his best to make a living, and in order to earn more money, he took on the job of the Night Watcher. However, no matter how hard he tried, it never seemed to be enough.
Leon realized that others might never worry about money, while he himself worried about not having enough when shopping. This thought made Leon increasingly frustrated, and he felt like a failure in life.
"Professor Leon, you are truly outstanding."
"Ah, um?" Leon was startled by Lian's words. He was slightly taken aback, then gave a shy smile.
"I said, Teacher Leon is really excellent, he can even cook."
"Oh, thank you. I used to live alone, so I had to cook for myself. I would taste it every time and think about how to make it better. After all, it's for myself, so I can't be careless. Over time, I gradually improved."
"I see, that was really difficult."
Back at the academy, Leon invited Professor Lean to sit on the sofa and rest, while he went to the kitchen to prepare ingredients.
Ms. Lian looked around and noticed that Leon's room had few belongings, all neatly arranged. The room was clean and quiet, but she sensed a faint loneliness in the atmosphere.
Feeling somewhat bored, she decided to get up and help Leon prepare the ingredients.
"Does Teacher Lian cook?" Leon asked curiously.
"Yes, I can do some simple things, like helping with washing things," Teacher Lian replied with a smile.
Ms. Lian usually lives alone and occasionally cooks for herself, but she doesn't have high requirements for food, as long as she can fill her stomach.
"Thank you for your help," Leon said gratefully.
The two quickly finished washing up. Lian sat at the dining table, watching Leon busy in the kitchen, and a warm smile unconsciously appeared on her face.
"Awaited."
Leon placed the prepared dishes on the table one by one, then sat opposite him, waiting for Teacher Lian to taste them.
Ms. Lian tasted a bite of each dish, her eyes revealing surprise and appreciation.
"It's really delicious. I think Chef Leon's skills are comparable to those of restaurant chefs," Chef Lian praised sincerely.
"Thank you for the compliment," Leon replied modestly, though he felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
.....
After lunch, Leon and Mr. Lian took a walk to digest their food, and before they knew it, they arrived at a familiar place.
Leon's gaze was drawn to a small hut on a street corner not far away. The old wooden sign on the door swayed gently in the still air, evoking memories from not long ago. He remembered that it was on the day of his college interview that he had stumbled upon this fortune-telling shop and decided to have his fortune told about the outcome of that day's interview.
The fortune teller hadn't prepared any rituals; he simply presented a deck of tarot cards for Leon to choose from. Leon picked randomly, and the fortune teller said he had great luck that day. He didn't think much of it at the time, but unexpectedly, he succeeded in the job interview.
"Teacher Leon, do you believe in divination?" Leon suddenly asked.
“I believe you,” Teacher Lian replied.
Leon didn't press for why, but continued, "I remember when I first arrived in Barton, the day after I was preparing for my interview, I stumbled upon a fortune-telling shop and thought I'd get a reading to see how the day would go. The fortune teller across from me hadn't even prepared any rituals; he just pulled out a deck of tarot cards and asked me to choose one. I picked one randomly, and he said I'd have great luck that day. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I never expected to actually succeed in the interview."
Teacher Lian chuckled and said, "Maybe you were tricked by the other party, but the final result is still consistent."
“Yeah, they don’t seem to be wrong, and I can’t really argue with them. Why don’t we go take a look together?” Leon suggested.
“Okay,” Teacher Lian readily agreed.
.......
"Could you please tell me what will happen today?" Leon said as soon as he entered the house, looking at the still simple and rustic little house and the young man sitting directly opposite him.
Leon didn't mention that he had been here before, assuming the other person probably wouldn't remember. After all, he met all sorts of people seeking divination every day, and someone as unremarkable as himself was unlikely to leave a lasting impression.
The young man didn't say anything, he just nodded.
This time, Leon planned to inquire about his future, even though he felt the other person might not be able to foresee anything. However, he was still very curious, and perhaps the other person would give him a satisfactory answer, just like last time.
The same divination steps, the same simplicity, but this time the result was not as expected.
Leon unfortunately received the Death card. Although he didn't know what Death meant, he figured it wasn't anything good.
He didn't let the other party interpret it, perhaps hoping that it wouldn't count if it wasn't interpreted, Leon thought to himself.
Teacher Lian received the Holy Grail, and she, like the other person, did not ask for an interpretation. Instead, she smiled and expressed her gratitude.
.....
Afterwards, the two continued to stroll around, putting the divination behind them, and visited many places. Teacher Lian took Leon to an orphanage, saying that she often visited orphanages in her original city before coming to Barton.
Every time she saw the orphans inside, she felt very sad. They were abandoned when they should have been laughing and playing, when they should have their parents by their side.
Leon felt sorry for them, but he couldn't even support himself right now, let alone help more people. He didn't know if he would come back to the orphanage when he had money in the future; perhaps his mindset would change drastically after he became wealthy.
The two spent the afternoon at the orphanage, playing with the children, and he felt that the day was very fulfilling.
On the way back, the atmosphere was somewhat heavy, perhaps because seeing these children reminded Lian of his own childhood.
She didn't say anything, and Leon didn't ask. Everyone has their own deepest secrets that they don't want others to know.
Leon himself never told anyone that he was a time traveler, not even the people closest to him in this world.
...
"Teacher Leon!"
Hearing someone call his name suddenly, Leon was a little confused, after all, he didn't know many people in this unfamiliar city. He turned around and found that it was Harvey and his mother, Lady Maria, walking towards him.
"Hello, Mrs. Maria," Leon greeted her with a smile.
“What a coincidence, Professor Leon and Professor Lian,” Harvey replied, a cheerful smile on his face.
"Hello, Harvey, Mrs. Maria," Mr. Lean replied politely.
Leon introduced Mrs. Maria, his fellow countrywoman, to Leon. He then introduced Leon's teacher, his colleague, to Mrs. Maria.
"To be honest, I was quite surprised too. I didn't expect to run into you guys on the street," Leon said with a smile, a warm feeling welling up inside him.
“Yes, what a coincidence. How is Harvey doing at school? Has he gotten into any trouble?” Mrs. Maria asked with concern.
“No, Harvey is an excellent student at school,” Ms. Lian replied with a smile. She knew Harvey; after all, he performed exceptionally well in her classes and was a child who loved learning.
"That's good." Mrs. Maria nodded in relief.
"Would you two like to come over for dinner? It's just Harvey and me every day, and it feels a bit lonely."
“Okay, what do you think, Mr. Leon?” Mr. Leon readily agreed and turned to ask Leon.
Leon thought the suggestion was excellent; he hadn't visited Harvey's family yet.
The four of them walked on their way to Harvey's house, their laughter and chatter filling the air.
"It seems you two have known each other for a long time," Lean asked Leon curiously.
"Yes, we've known each other for quite a long time."
