Chapter 55 War
In the early morning, Agreed woke up again, and Hepburn also woke up, so the two of them did some more morning exercise.
After finishing his morning exercise, Agred walked down the street feeling refreshed. He had swept away the fatigue and emptiness of the past month that night. He then went to the Adventurers' Guild, only to find that the lobby on the first floor was unusually crowded with adventurers. Agred glanced around and noticed that most of the adventurers who were staying at the Adventurers' Guild were here. So, Agred asked the receptionist with some confusion, "Miss Michelle, what's going on?"
Miss Michelle quickly explained, "Mr. Agred, you've arrived. The guild master told me to gather all the adventurers, saying there's something important to announce. I was just about to send someone to find you. Your other team members have already arrived. Please find a place to rest first, and the guild master will come to announce the matter after everyone has arrived." Then she went off to attend to others.
Argreed asked suspiciously, "My teammates are all here? Where are they?" As he looked around, a slovenly figure soon caught his attention.
It was Rayleigh, that idiot who only thinks with his lower body. He was flirting with a hot female adventurer with a bouquet of flowers. When Agreed saw this, he ran over and kicked Rayleigh away. Then he apologized to the adventurer he had been flirting with and dragged Rayleigh to the side.
As he walked, Agreed shouted, "Didn't I give you all the orders?! I don't care if you mess around, but don't you dare mess with the Adventurers' Guild. Even rabbits don't eat the grass near their burrows. You'll be running into them all the time. What if you make enemies because of this? Don't you have any sense?!"
Rayleigh rubbed his face, which was covered in shoe prints, and said pitifully, "I just couldn't help it."
Agreed drew a dagger from his waist and slapped the edge of the blade against Rayleigh's face, threatening, "Don't force me to castrate you! If you only think with your lower body, I'll be dragged down by you sooner or later."
Rayleigh swallowed hard in alarm, carefully moved the knife away, and said, "It's not that serious, it's just playing around, it's a consensual thing."
"Heh, consensual? A month ago, during the escort mission, you were quite something, following the caravan and hooking up with the little cook in charge of logistics. A few days later, you dumped her, but we'd only just begun our journey! You made us eat dry rations for almost a month, not even vegetables!! Do you know how painful it was when I had to test the porridge with a silver needle to see if it was poisoned?! Damn it, just thinking about it makes me furious, go to hell!!!" Getting angrier and angrier, Agreed swung a powerful punch, slapping Rayleigh across the face, sending him spinning three and a half times before crashing to the ground.
Agreed clapped his hands, suddenly feeling much better. He then led the sullen Rayleigh to the other team members, and the group found a corner to sit together and wait for the chairman's speech.
Soon everyone had arrived. The guild leader, dressed in flamboyant and extravagant clothes, stood on the bar and shouted, "Everyone, I apologize for disturbing your rest, but summoning all adventurers at this time is truly an emergency. To make a long story short, the Orc Empire's army has just broken the peace agreement and sent troops towards Avalon. Sunset City, located on the border, is naturally their first target. I don't ask you to sacrifice yourselves for the country, but... we must buy time for the evacuation of ordinary people. Please cooperate with the town's garrison and hold out for at least twenty-one days starting today. Then we can send all the children and women away through the secret passage."
A veteran adventurer scoffed after hearing this, saying, "I thought it was something big. It's just the orcs invading. Sunset City has fallen and been recaptured countless times in the last twenty years. We're quite adept at dealing with orcs. Women and children are the hope for the future. Count me in. I'll make sure they withdraw from the battlefield safely."
At this moment, all the adventurers raised their hands and said, "Count me in too!"
With the nation in peril, Agreed and his companions naturally couldn't stand idly by. All the adventurers signed up to participate, and the guild leader excitedly expressed his gratitude to everyone. Then, the city entered a state of emergency preparedness. Women and children were secretly sent out of the city, while the men busily began repairing fortifications.
That night, Agreed returned home and, seeing Hepburn still there, said worriedly, "Are you really going to stay? It's about to become very dangerous here."
While mixing potions, Hepburn replied, "Grandma Tom needs to prepare healing potions for the warriors. As her apprentice and one of only two advanced potion masters here, I must stay and support you. Don't worry, I've already asked Sister-in-law Shalinda next door to take her daughter out of town and given her some money to take care of her."
Seeing that he had made up his mind, Agreed said nothing more. Next door, Shalinda was a widow whose husband, a soldier, had died in the war and she had no children. So she had always treated Shalinda as her own daughter and felt at ease letting her take care of her.
Time passed by in the tense atmosphere of defense. Three days later, the orc army arrived near Sunset Town. Before this, the nearby Rock City, Wind Ridge, and Stone Gate Pass had all fallen. Now, the orc army was in high spirits and its morale was high. Looking at the orcs sharpening their swords, everyone's face was solemn.
Soon, an adventurer who had been acting as a scout returned to the city with arrow wounds all over his body. Surrounded and helped by the crowd, he shouted, "There are at least 20,000 orcs here, and I saw the orc's old swordsman, Kasa, here too!" After saying that, he fainted.
He brought truly terrible news. The 20,000-strong orc army was manageable, as they could at least use the terrain and city walls to hold them off. But the orc swordsman named Kasa was a top-tier warrior who had once been a legend!
Although his strength has decreased to the Grandmaster level with age, it is still not something that the adventurers in the city can stop. A Grandmaster-level warrior can fly in the air for a long time, and the city walls cannot stop him at all. Letting him into the city would be an absolute massacre!
"It seems we're doomed," the guild leader said resignedly, unable to think of any way to stop the orcs' attack.
At this moment, Agreed seemed to have thought of something and said to himself, "Perhaps I have a way to temporarily restrain him."
Upon hearing this, the president rushed over as if grasping at a straw, grabbed Agreed's hand, and asked, "Is this true?"
Agreed nodded and said, "I'm 60% confident that if my team and I work together, we can at least prevent the orc swordsman from going on a rampage on the city walls during the big battle, although we might not be able to defeat him."
