Chapter 24 Attempting Enchanting

After that, Milton told Agreed an interesting story about enchanting.

Legend has it that long ago there was a rich and foolish king who, on a whim, forged a "laser sword" out of mithril, with a handle engraved with magic crystals and the sharpest magic arrays.

Those who truly understand this weapon can only call it stupid. Whether from a practical or economic standpoint, that laser sword is far inferior to a traditional sword with enchantment. Although the laser sword consumes a great deal of magic power and can break through any defense, to be honest, any sword with that level of magic enchantment can do the same. Even a great mage can only use that laser sword for half a minute, which shows how enormous the consumption is, something that ordinary people simply cannot afford.

As for the weapon in actual combat, it was not only easy to injure the user, but also had virtually no defense against ranged weapons, because its main body only had a hilt and there was no space to enchant other magic circles. As a result, that king is still regarded as a negative example by all enchanters and nailed to the pillar of historical shame. The lightsaber was also placed in a museum and described in the information panel.

"Would any idiot actually use this weapon? -- A tribute to the world's most disastrous design."

Argreed couldn't help but laugh when he heard the story, but the lightsaber was only applicable in certain situations, such as when there weren't enough materials to make the sword and the user didn't know magic but had magic power or magic crystals. But to be honest, what kind of barbaric land could meet such conditions?

After hearing the story, Agreed also came up with a bold idea: he wanted to try engraving the first enchantment circle he had learned on the fine steel knife that Uncle Reller had given him.

Milton immediately became interested upon hearing this, and he and Agreed began their first enchanting session in a great hurry.

Milton examined Agreed's dagger and, after a while, judged, "Your dagger is really too small, but the steel is quite strong. If you're using it yourself, since you're a mage, you don't need to leave room for magic crystals. I estimate that if you squeeze it in, it can accommodate three enchantments."

Agreed's eyes immediately lit up as he said, "Then why don't you give me two more enchantments?"

Milton laughed and said, "You're dreaming, aren't you? But it's fine, it's not right for me to just eat and drink here for free all the time. I'll give you a hand and see how much we can strengthen this steel dagger together."

Thus, the two magic novices embarked on their first enchanting attempt. With the super-strong soul he had cultivated under the blessing of the River Styx, Agreed easily succeeded in enchanting with Sharpness. Moreover, according to Milton, the quality of the Sharpness magic circle he enchanted was even better than that of Milton's father!

Milton then used his own expertise to imbue the dagger with two more properties: "Magic Storage" and "Magic Wind," both of which are very practical and common enchantments.

Magic storage allows mages to store magic on items. However, the quality of the stored magic is determined by the strength of the material. Better materials can hold more powerful magic and can be stored multiple times. Magic wind allows mages to store excess magic power in items during normal times. When magic power is exhausted in battle, the magic power stored in the items can be urgently used to fight enemies, which is equivalent to extra magic power reserves.

After a flurry of enchanting work by the two, the dagger was instantly elevated to a level that Agred could never hope to reach. If the steel dagger was just a common weapon that cost four silver coins at a blacksmith's shop, then this enchanted dagger would now cost at least fifty gold coins on the market. Agred finally understood why some people said that enchanting was the most profitable profession and why everyone was eager to become an enchanter. With profits that were thousands of times higher, it would be truly unjust if an enchanter didn't have money. Capitalists would weep at these profits; the speed at which they made money was faster than robbery.

Milton, however, dismissed this, saying, "Look at you, so ignorant. It's just an enchanted weapon made from an ordinary dagger. You should really see the peerless divine weapons that enchanters create with 'dwarven weapons,' the most precious material they dream of!"

Agreed asked, puzzled, "Why are enchanters so obsessed with dwarven weapons?"

Upon hearing this question, Milton immediately became serious and solemnly explained, "Because dwarves are the world's most elite forging race. Most of them live in mineral-rich mountains and dedicate their lives to forging. Tens of thousands of years of tradition have given them all sorts of alloy formulas. Some of their self-made special metals are so incredibly strong that they can split mountains and shatter rocks. The rarer and more powerful the weapon, the more enchantments it can accept. Legend has it that the weapon forged by the Dwarf King can hold up to 981 enchantment magic circles! What does that mean? Perhaps only beings at the level of gods are qualified to use weapons of that level."

Agreed suddenly realized, "No wonder enchanters' ultimate fantasy is dwarven weapons. If such good materials were available, crafting a peerless weapon would be a dream come true, something to be remembered in history."

Milton nodded in agreement, then looked at Agreed and said, "However, you're quite the oddball. Your talent is amazing. Your first enchantment was even better than my dad's old-fashioned work! Don't you really want to try becoming an enchanter? You have a much brighter future as an enchanter than as a mage. I can recommend you to my mentor. If we work together, our reputation will surely resound throughout the entire continent."

Agreed waved his hand and declined, saying, "Everyone has their own ambitions. I only studied enchanting out of curiosity. I yearn to become a magician. I need power to fulfill my lifelong wish."

Milton asked, puzzled, "What wish can only be granted by a magician?"

Agreed sighed sadly, "To be an enemy of the chosen ones!"

Milton was stunned when he heard this ambition, and then he quickly asked, "What nonsense are you talking about? God is an unattainable being."

Agreed shouted fiercely, "I'm not joking. This is my personal grudge. For revenge, I will not hesitate to fight even if God is on my opposite side. Even if a true god descends, I will fight him."

Milton, seeing the arrogant young man before him, was instantly captivated by his aura. He chimed in, "Then you absolutely have to call me along. Wearing the gear I enchanted for you to kill a god will definitely boost my value!"

The two exchanged a smile, and Agreed nodded in response, "Then you'd better do your best, or I'll lose because your weapons aren't good enough."

So the two boys made a promise that might never be fulfilled in their lifetime, and it was at that time that Agreed gained the first true friend in his life.
