Chapter 107 Location of the Imperial Mausoleum
Thus, the warg riders developed within the orc army and became one of the orcs' signature units. While the warg riders could not compete with large-scale human cavalry in direct combat, the wargs, being carnivores, had an innate fear effect on horses that humans could ride and herbivores. Therefore, the warg riders' actual fighting style was more like that of guerrillas operating independently.
The true strategic significance of direwolf riders on large-scale battlefields lies in disrupting enemy formations and demoralizing them by leveraging the direwolves' high mobility. The direwolves teach their enemies that fear is the greatest enemy of an army's formation. This tactic has enabled orcs to frequently achieve victories against superior numbers and with weaker forces.
Human cavalry were generally routed by direwolf riders on most real battlefields. Because their horses weren't agile enough, the direwolf riders knew they couldn't win a head-on fight, but... wouldn't they exploit the human's weakness and flank them? They would use their speed and agility to wear the human down, and what could the human do about it? Direwolf riders harassing human cavalry was like a bully harassing a cripple. I think this analogy can help you understand the high blood pressure and fear that human cavalry felt when facing direwolf riders.
Moreover, the five thousand wolf riders who came to find Agred rode giant war wolves that were genuinely bred by the Orcish Empire's royal family (two meters tall at the shoulder, much taller than the largest horses). They were not afraid of even human cavalry in a head-on confrontation. So Agred had to plan carefully in order to eliminate them.
Agred could have simply run away, but it would be ungrateful of him not to take the bait that was already being offered to him.
Agreed said that this wave could have been avoided, but he didn't think it was necessary. He believes that in life, one should be greedy when there is a chance of success, otherwise one will starve to death sooner or later.
So Argreid quickly set up a magical trap on the orc cavalry's inevitable route. Some time later, while the orc prince and his direwolf riders were still galloping, the ground beneath their feet suddenly collapsed, and a huge pit appeared at their feet. The direwolf riders fell into the pit one after another, but the trap only trapped one-fifth of the direwolf riders.
Agreed shook his head helplessly at the majority of the direwolf riders who hadn't fallen in, saying, "As expected, direwolves are too agile; these traps are easy for them to dodge. But luckily, this was just a prelude." Before he finished speaking, Agreed triggered other traps with a thought, and a series of explosions rang out from beneath the direwolf riders' feet. These were remote-controlled magical bombs that Agreed had specially set up, exhausting all his magic power. After this round of explosions, not to mention direwolves, even if you were riding a mammoth, you'd have to lie down obediently.
The explosion ended quickly, and as the smoke cleared, only a few survivors remained, groaning in pain, stubbornly clinging to life. Then, Agreed 'borrowed' a large iron knife from the corpses on the ground and began a delightful finishing-off session, slicing one of the victims off one by one.
The ground troops were quickly finished off, and Agreed then dug out the large crater that had been buried by the explosion. Most of the dire wolf riders inside had not been affected by the blast wave, so the casualties were not serious.
The orc prince, still alive below, cried out in horror upon seeing Agred, "A high-ranking undead! And with such intelligence! Heaven has truly forsaken my orc empire! Father, I am so sorry, I cannot complete the task you entrusted to me." Suddenly, the orc prince produced something resembling a firework and quickly activated it. A cloud-piercing arrow shot out instantly, seemingly about to send out the distress signal, but Agred waved his hand, intercepting the arrow in mid-air. It detonated before it even left the ground, preventing the message from being transmitted.
Agreed clapped his hands, now it seemed no one would know the whereabouts of this fallen cavalry unit for some time. Then, Agreed called out to the orc prince in the pit, "Judging from your jewelry and equipment, you are a member of the orc imperial family, aren't you?"
The crown prince of the Orc Empire roared, "Caesar, don't be so smug! My father will tear you to pieces... shatter your bones into a million pieces!"
Agreed scoffed, "Anyone can talk tough, but it's quite surprising that you, a member of the royal family, don't have a Grandmaster-level bodyguard with you."
The orc prince's lips twitched as he thought to himself, "The grandmaster-level expert beside me just died in your magic trap, are you even speaking human language? Wait, it doesn't seem to be human to begin with. Damn it, how can this undead have such power?!"
Agreed looked at the silent prince of the orcish empire and said helplessly, "If you don't want to talk, then forget it." With that, Agreed activated his magic, and countless stone spikes appeared at the bottom of the giant pit, sending all the orcs still alive in the pit to their deaths.
Later, Agred completely absorbed the life force and bone of the dire wolves and orcs, leaving only the corpse of the orc prince. After taking out the orc prince's corpse intact, Agred used necromancy to turn him into his familiar.
Green flames began to burn in the orc prince's eyes, and then his already cold corpse rose and knelt respectfully before Agred, saying, "My supreme master, Mondan, hereby offers you my loyalty."
Agreed asked him, "Do you know where the royal tombs of the Orc Empire are? Take me there, and I can give you a quick death, letting you return to the River Styx." As he spoke, Agreed resurrected two war wolves as undead to ride as mounts, choosing the larger one to sit on.
Then Mondan mechanically stood up, rode another dire wolf and ran ahead, leading Agreed toward the royal tomb. In fact, Mondan had no intelligence at all. He was just a low-level undead, like a robot, who would only obey all the commands of his creator. Otherwise, even if he became an undead, who would be so foolish as to lead his enemy to dig up his own ancestral graves?
The two quickly rode their dire wolves to the location of the Orcish Empire's royal mausoleum. They dismounted and walked to the heavy gate of the mausoleum. Mondan then mechanically said, "To prevent magical beasts and other villains from disturbing the slumber of our ancestors, there are many traps inside. Please be careful."
Argreed placed his hand on his head and replied, "I will. You're useless now. I'll let you go." With that, Mondan's soul fire went out, and his bones were completely absorbed by Argreed, turning him into a puddle of mud.
Then Agreed stared into thought as he looked at the heavy stone door in front of him.
