Chapter 257: Firearms
Deng Yin dissected the mutated beast and obtained its throat.
It looks so thin, I didn't expect it to be so fireproof.
The trachet was long enough to fit perfectly as a musket barrel. Deng Yin quickly and carefully removed the trachet and took it to the workshop to begin modifying the musket. With his superb skills, he quickly installed the trachet in the original barrel position, meticulously reinforcing the connection. After finishing, he couldn't wait to test it. Arriving at the testing ground, Deng Yin loaded ammunition, aimed at a distant boulder, and pulled the trigger. A loud "boom" resounded, and a burst of fire erupted, but the barrel made from the trachet remained completely undamaged, and the range was significantly greater than before. The surrounding villagers, seeing this, gathered around, their eyes filled with astonishment. "Deng Yin, what new and amazing contraption have you come up with this time?" an old man asked curiously. Deng Yin proudly brandished the musket in his hand and said, "This barrel is made from the throat of a mutated beast. It's not only fireproof but also works very well. We'll have more confidence in dealing with those mutated beasts in the future." Everyone looked delighted upon hearing this, as if they could see an extra layer of security for their future peaceful lives.
At this moment, several young men from the village gathered around, their eyes sparkling as they looked at the musket. They pleaded, "Brother Deng, could you teach us how to make this musket? That way we can protect the village too." Deng Yin laughed heartily, "Sure, as long as you're willing to learn." So, he led the young men back to the workshop and began teaching them.
A few days later, many villagers were patrolling with these improved muskets. That day, a group of mutated beasts attacked the village. The villagers didn't panic; instead, they grabbed their muskets and prepared for battle. When the mutated beasts approached, everyone opened fire. The powerful firepower forced the mutated beasts to retreat. One of the larger mutated beasts attempted to break through the defenses, but Deng Yin raised his musket and fired accurately, hitting it directly in a vital spot.
After the victory, the villagers cheered with joy. Everyone understood that with this new invention, their chances of survival in this dangerous land had greatly increased. Standing among the crowd, Deng Yin watched his jubilant fellow villagers and secretly resolved to continue his research and create more useful things to protect the village.
Deng Yin returned to the workshop and began to consider his next research direction. He thought of a tough vine he had found at the edge of the forest; it would be great to use it to make defensive tools. The next day, he went into the forest early to find the vine. After collecting enough, he tried to weave it into a net. After many failures, he finally wove a large net. He pulled the net to the fence outside the village, secured it, and set up some simple alarm devices on it.
Not long after, another group of mutated beasts attacked. When they touched the protective netting, the alarm sounded, and the villagers rushed to the scene. The mutated beasts struggled trapped in the netting, but the villagers easily shot them down with muskets. After this victory, other villages, hearing of the incident, sent people to learn from their experience and techniques. Deng Yin shared his knowledge without reservation, and the surrounding villages gradually united to fight against the mutated beasts. Meanwhile, Deng Yin continued to bury himself in his workshop every day, constantly exploring new uses for various materials. He knew that only through continuous innovation could this land remain vibrant and its people truly live in peace.
One day, while researching in his workshop, Deng Yin discovered a strange stone. Its surface was rough, but its interior faintly glowed. He instinctively felt this stone was special and began various tests. After some exploration, he discovered that the stone released a gas when heated, a gas that could actually repel small mutated beasts. Deng Yin was overjoyed; he thought that if it could be used on a large scale, it would reduce many dangers.
After the news spread, representatives from various villages came hoping to obtain this stone. Deng Yin led everyone to search for veins of this stone in the nearby mountains. In a secluded valley, they indeed found a large quantity of ore. Deng Yin instructed everyone on safe mining methods and taught them how to refine and use it.
As time went by, the area became increasingly safe thanks to Deng Yin's numerous inventions. However, by chance, Deng Yin learned of a mysterious material in a remote border region, said to possess the powerful ability to alter the environment. Intrigued, Deng Yin decided to embark on a journey to find it. The villagers, though reluctant to let him go, knew that his success would bring greater benefits to everyone. So, Deng Yin packed his bags and set off into the unknown, filled with anticipation and hope.
Deng led the way out of the village and continued along the path. The journey was long, sometimes requiring him to traverse dense forests and sometimes wade through swift-flowing rivers. Along the way, he encountered many difficulties, but his inner faith sustained him.
One day, he passed through a small town. The townspeople looked very poor and suffered from a strange illness. Deng Yin felt compassion and stopped to try to treat the sick with the herbs and knowledge he carried. After several days of effort, some of the patients even showed improvement. The townspeople were moved to tears and gave Deng Yin the only food they had.
After leaving the town, Deng Yin continued his journey. The closer he got to the border, the more treacherous the terrain became. He accidentally fell into a deep pit, the bottom of which was filled with sharp, spiky rocks. Fortunately, relying on the agility he had honed through years of labor, he clung to the pit wall and slowly climbed out.
Finally, he arrived at the legendary borderland. Before him lay a misty region, where the mysterious material lay hidden. Deng Yin took a deep breath, clenched his fist, and stepped into this mysterious land, his heart filled with anticipation for what he was about to discover and longing for a better future.
Deng Yin hadn't gone far into the mist when he felt a wave of dizziness, as if some force was pulling at his consciousness. He endured the discomfort and continued deeper. Suddenly, he saw a faint light flickering ahead. Deng Yin quickened his pace towards the light and discovered it was a plant emitting a strange glow, its leaves appearing as if sculpted from crystal. He thought to himself that this might be the mysterious material.
Just as he reached out to touch it, the ground suddenly trembled, and a gigantic beast, resembling a pangolin but covered in thorns, burst forth from the earth. The beast roared and pounced on Deng Yin. Deng Yin quickly dodged to the side, drawing his short sword. The beast attacked again, and Deng Yin seized the opportunity, leaping onto its back and plunging his sword deep into the relatively soft spot of its neck. The beast struggled a few times before collapsing.
Deng Yin walked towards the plant and carefully dug up the roots, wrapping them with soil. He knew that this miraculous plant would improve the soil in his hometown and greatly increase crop yields. Filled with excitement, Deng Yin embarked on his journey home, imagining the prosperous and beautiful future of his hometown.
On his return journey, Deng Yin dared not rest for a moment, traveling day and night. However, while crossing a canyon, he encountered a group of bandits. They coveted the mysterious plant in Deng Yin's bundle and surrounded him with menacing expressions. Deng Yin tightly protected his bundle, calmly observing his surroundings. Knowing he couldn't fight them head-on, he deliberately shouted, "This plant is cursed! Whoever touches it will be cursed!" The bandits were skeptical, and while they hesitated, Deng Yin seized the opportunity to throw out a homemade smoke bomb. Amidst the thick smoke, he nimbly weaved through the bandits, quickly escaping the canyon.
After overcoming countless hardships, Deng Yin finally returned to his hometown. The villagers warmly welcomed him back. Without even resting, he immediately ran to the edge of the fields and planted the miraculous plant according to his pre-planned method. Under everyone's careful care, the plant grew rapidly, its energy gradually seeping into the soil. Soon after, the crops indeed thrived, yielding far more than ever before. Hearing of this, people from surrounding villages came to learn the planting method. Deng Yin became a hero in everyone's eyes, and thanks to his efforts, the land became increasingly prosperous, with everyone living in peace and contentment.
As crop yields increased, the village stored more and more grain. Deng Yin proposed building a large granary to prepare for unforeseen circumstances. The villagers responded enthusiastically, and with everyone working together, the granary was quickly completed.
However, the good fortune didn't last long. One night, acid rain suddenly fell from the sky. The crops affected by the acid rain began to wither, and even the miraculous plant became listless. Deng Yin was extremely anxious; he realized he had to find a way to solve the problem of acid rain.
He consulted ancient texts and traveled extensively, eventually learning from a reclusive old man that a rare mineral could neutralize the acidity of acid rain. Without hesitation, Deng Yin packed his bags again and set off to find it. After a long search, he finally found the mineral in a desolate mountain.
Deng Yin returned to the village with the ore, ground it into powder, and sprinkled it on the fields. A miracle occurred: the crops revived, and the miraculous plant regained its vitality. The village returned to its prosperous state, and the villagers respected Deng Yin even more. Deng Yin, meanwhile, continued to silently protect this land, always ready to face new challenges.
The peaceful days didn't last long. Deng Yin noticed the village's water source had become murky. He investigated upstream and discovered that a cave in the mountains had collapsed, blocking part of the river and causing the flow to slow and silt to accumulate. Deng Yin organized the villagers to clear the silt and move stones. However, repairing the cave was extremely difficult. While worrying, he remembered a highly adhesive resin he had seen before that could be used to bond stones. So he went into the mountains to find the resin tree, spending several days collecting enough resin. Returning to the riverbank, he directed the villagers to arrange the stones in the appropriate shape and then use the resin to bond them together. After several days and nights of hard work, the river was finally cleared, and the water returned to its clear state. But Deng Yin knew this was only temporary peace; nature could bring new crises at any time. He began teaching the villagers basic water management knowledge and environmental protection concepts, hoping that through everyone's efforts, the village could better withstand natural disasters. The villagers studied diligently and paid more attention to protecting nature in their daily farming activities. From then on, under Deng Yin's leadership, the village not only enjoyed a prosperous life but also gained the ability to face various challenges, truly achieving long-term stability and security.
Years later, the village children had grown up and were filled with curiosity about the outside world. Deng Yin decided to take a few adventurous young men out to broaden their horizons. They set off into the distance, passing through a desert. In the desert, they discovered a peculiar sand worm whose silk was incredibly strong. Deng Yin had a sudden inspiration: if they could bring this silk back to the village and weave it into cloth, they could surely make durable clothing. So they caught some sand worms and carefully raised them.
Continuing their journey, they arrived at a seaside fishing village. The fishermen there were being harassed by a sea monster, severely damaging their fishing industry. Using his experience dealing with mutated beasts in the village, Deng Yin helped the fishermen design traps to capture the sea monster. After their success, the fishermen were extremely grateful and presented them with precious pearls and a unique nautical chart.
Deng Yin and his companions returned to the village with their harvest. He gave the sandworms to skilled weavers, who successfully crafted an unprecedentedly durable fabric. The nautical chart, however, gave him a new idea. He planned to select some villagers to learn navigation, hoping to one day open maritime trade routes and further develop the village. The villagers were full of anticipation for Deng Yin's new plan and threw themselves into its implementation with great enthusiasm.
Deng Yinxian selected intelligent and physically strong young men and women from the village to form a navigation team. He personally taught them navigation skills, from identifying directions by celestial bodies to judging wind direction and currents. After several months, these team members had mastered basic navigation skills.
Afterwards, Deng Yin led his team to build boats suitable for long voyages. They felled tough timbers, carefully constructed the hulls, and made sturdy sails from cloth woven from sandworm silk. Once everything was ready, the fleet set sail.
The voyage began smoothly, but soon a storm struck. Gale-force winds and towering waves swept in, violently rocking the ship. Deng Yin calmly directed the operation, using his learned skills to stabilize the vessel. Having barely weathered the storm, they encountered pirates. Deng Yin instructed his crew to take cover while he skillfully maneuvered. He lit a signal flare—a specially made one from the village—the bright light and thick smoke scaring away the pirates.
Afterwards, they arrived at an unfamiliar island. The island was rich in resources, including rare spices and exquisite gems. Deng Yin interacted with the local tribes, exchanging village specialties for these items.
The fleet, laden with cargo, returned to the village, commencing maritime trade. The village grew increasingly wealthy, attracting merchants from all over. Deng Yin, however, did not rest on his laurels, continuing to explore new avenues, firmly believing that the village would prosper even more through continuous progress.
Deng Yin noticed the inconvenience merchants faced in transporting goods, and he began to think about improving transportation. He recalled a wheel-like structure he had seen before and decided to create a wheeled cart. He then gathered skilled carpenters from the village to work together on the project. After numerous attempts, a sturdy yet lightweight wooden cart was born. This cart, once introduced, greatly improved the efficiency of goods transportation.
Next, Deng Yin focused on the village's housing construction. He felt that the existing houses were monotonous in style and lacked functionality. Drawing inspiration from architectural styles he had seen during his travels and combining them with the village's actual needs, he designed a new type of house. This house had good ventilation, higher space utilization, and simple moisture-proof facilities. The villagers built their new houses according to Deng Yin's design, and their living experience was greatly improved.
As the village continued to develop, education was put on the agenda. Deng Yin deeply understood the importance of knowledge transmission, so he established a school and personally taught the children to read, write, do arithmetic, and various practical skills. The village children thrived under the nourishment of new knowledge, harboring dreams, just like Deng Yin had in his youth, eager to explore more of the unknown and contribute to the prosperity of the village.
