A post-apocalyptic female soul travels back to the War of Resistance against Japan
Chapter 97 Enemy Army Attacks
Cheng Ying searched forward for a while longer and soon encountered another patrol of soldiers. Cheng Ying was currently invisible, so they couldn't see her. She remained silent until they passed, at which point she saw the same group of soldiers reappear. Cheng Ying followed them until they reached the outskirts of the village. About a mile outside the village, there was a dense thicket of grass, and it was in that thicket that many people were crouching.
Cheng Ying cautiously approached them, listening to them speak Japanese. She thought to herself, "Damn it, those Japanese devils again! They're sneaking in to launch a surprise attack!" It was too dark to take out her translator. Whatever they were up to, she'd wait and see. Actually, their current close proximity made it the perfect opportunity to capture them.
But to find out their purpose, they should catch them red-handed when they start doing something bad! Cheng Ying watched for a while, and the more she looked, the more something seemed off; some of the people looked familiar. Cheng Ying took a closer look by the moonlight, and oh dear! Weren't these the special forces soldiers who had appeared by the railway earlier?
They've come for revenge. Cheng Ying counted them; there seemed to be about a hundred of them! Hmph! This bunch of defeated soldiers dare to play the sneak attack game. Even if they were special forces soldiers, they're still her defeated foe.
Cheng Ying quickly returned to the base and, after revealing herself, informed Captain Zhang, "Captain Zhang, I just spotted a group of about a hundred people. It looks like the special forces team we saw in the village the other day. They seem to be plotting something and might launch a surprise attack on us." Upon hearing Cheng Ying's words, Captain Zhang immediately summoned several squad leaders and ordered them to set up defensive positions and traps outside the village.
Cheng Ying said, "Captain Zhang, I think if they're going to launch a sneak attack, it'll be when we're least on guard in the early morning. That's when they're most likely to come." Captain Zhang agreed, so he ordered his men to split into two groups: one to rest and the other to keep watch. They would then rotate shifts immediately at the designated time. This way, they could maintain peak vigilance and avoid being killed due to momentary lapses in attention.
Around 3 a.m., the other side made a move, and Cheng Ying had been observing them the whole time. The group didn't know that we already knew they were coming to ambush us, so they slowly approached with their guns drawn. They seemed to have some experience; they weren't together, but rather spread out and slowly moved closer.
Just as they were getting within a certain distance, Captain Zhang gave the order, "Fire! Don't let a single one escape!" Upon hearing the order, the soldiers immediately heard gunfire, and the battle resumed!
Despite their caution, the enemy was unaware that we were on guard. So, without their knowledge, the first dozen or so of them immediately fell. When they realized someone was firing at them, they orderly found cover and hid. Because of the darkness, their positions were unclear.
After a burst of fire from our side, they temporarily ceased firing. The soldiers carefully watched the other side, ready to open fire immediately at the slightest movement. This moment would test the tactical superiority of both sides. But the enemy forgot one person: Cheng Ying. Cheng Ying was a renowned killing machine, capable of taking on a thousand men single-handedly. When Cheng Ying struck, she was sure to wipe them out!
However, Cheng Ying is also looking for an opportunity. In fact, if she had known it would be this troublesome, she would have taken them down as soon as she discovered them. But that's just a thought. She can't rely on herself to handle everything. She needs to let the people below her do more practice and learn how to deal with different situations. These are things they all need to learn. If she were here, she could stand in front of them. If she's not here, they are planning to go back tomorrow. If this situation happens again, they must be able to handle it themselves.
Thinking this through, Cheng Ying decided that as long as the soldiers' lives were not in danger, she would not intervene.
