A post-apocalyptic female soul travels back to the War of Resistance against Japan
Chapter 134 Encountering a Pack of Wolves on the Way to the Gold Mine
The three of them dressed up specially, but their attire was that of ordinary villagers and not particularly outstanding or eye-catching.
The three of them quietly left the city, all looking like they were about to embark on a long journey. Cheng Ying prepared plenty of dry food and water for them, because the trip would take several days.
After leaving the city, they headed straight for the alleyway. Cheng Ying wondered if they were going to walk all the way there.
Cheng Ying glanced at Captain Li and Wang Cheng walking briskly and asked in confusion, "Captain Li, are we just going to walk there like this?"
Captain Li said, "We have to walk this part of the road first, because it's all narrow paths and it's inconvenient to ride a horse or a bicycle. Once we get to the port, we'll take a boat across, which is closer."
Cheng Ying thought that the mountain where the gold mine was discovered must have been quite hidden. This involved both traveling by water and climbing mountains, so the roads must have been difficult to navigate!
After hearing this, Cheng Ying stopped talking and followed Captain Li and Wang Cheng forward. After walking for about a day, the three of them finally arrived at the port.
It was already dark when Captain Li found a small boat. After negotiating the price with the boatman, the three of them boarded the boat.
The boatman was an experienced old man. He told them that it would take some time to get to the other side, and that there might be rough seas on the river that night, so they should be prepared.
The three nodded and boarded the boat. They sat in the boat, with Cheng Ying sitting between Captain Li and Wang Cheng. Soon, the boat began to rock and sway forward.
Cheng Ying felt a little uneasy, but she gritted her teeth and persevered. She gazed at the dark river and silently prayed that everything would go smoothly.
Just then, a strong wind came from the river, making the small boat seem to fly away. Fortunately, it was a close call, and soon it fell back down. They sat on the boat, clinging tightly to the edge, not daring to move.
It was really thrilling and exciting! The old man who was rowing the boat stood steadily at the stern. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that his legs were tied to the boat with ropes! It seems that he had made some preparations beforehand.
Cheng Ying felt that they had been sitting on the boat for a long time before they could vaguely see the opposite bank. Listening to the rushing water and looking at the dark night ahead, they felt disoriented and couldn't tell which way was which. However, the old man who was rowing the boat could tell the direction, and it seemed that he had been here for many years.
The ability to discern directions still requires someone familiar with the route to lead the way. Especially ahead of them, there was only an oil lamp hanging precariously on the bow of the boat; thankfully, the lamp was covered by a glass cover, otherwise it would have been blown out with a single breath.
When the boat finally reached the shore, the group disembarked and breathed a long sigh of relief. Cheng Ying, however, was still somewhat shaken, as she rarely had the opportunity to travel by boat and felt a little out of place.
After disembarking, they climbed up the hillside along the path. Cheng Ying looked back at the dark night as the small boat swayed back again.
Cheng Ying turned to Captain Li and asked, "Captain Li, that boat went back again. Do we take the same route back? What if there are no boats to take us back?"
Captain Li said, "There's a way to get back. When there aren't many passengers, the boat usually makes two round trips between the two sides at fixed times. Maybe we can take another route then. We'll figure something out then!"
"That's good." Cheng Ying nodded in relief.
The group walked along the winding mountain path, surrounded by darkness, only able to see the way ahead by the faint moonlight.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew by, bringing a chill. Cheng Ying couldn't help but shiver and followed closely behind Captain Li.
"Everyone be careful, there might be wild animals lurking here," Captain Li warned.
Cheng Ying's heart tightened. Recalling the legends she had heard about the wild beasts in the mountains, she became even more nervous. Actually, Cheng Ying wasn't afraid; she just hadn't encountered any wild beasts since she transmigrated, let alone fought them.
The power of those mutated beasts from the apocalypse was still fresh in my mind. But thinking about it, the wild beasts here probably weren't as powerful as the mutated beasts from the apocalypse.
Just then, a strange sound came from ahead, as if something was approaching.
Captain Li raised his flashlight and shone it forward, only to see a dark shadow flash by.
"It's a wolf!" Wang Cheng exclaimed.
Everyone immediately became alert and picked up their weapons to prepare for a counterattack.
