My sister is Luna

Chapter 55 The Empress's Summoning (Part 1)

early morning.

As the first rays of sunlight streamed through the room's window, Cain opened his eyes.

He was wearing the blue uniform of the Great Wall Guards, which had been taken off and kept after he was treated. It had been cleaned and was free of any bloodstains.

He looked in the bronze mirror, carefully tidying his silver-white hair and examining his overall appearance. After all, he was going to meet Her Majesty the Empress, so his appearance had to be impeccable; first impressions are very important.

"Not bad, very handsome." Cain smiled with satisfaction.

Then, he carefully walked over to Shangguan Wan'er, who was sleeping soundly with her head covered by a blanket on the table. Looking at her peaceful sleeping face, Cain gently stroked her head, which was covered with long, black hair, with pity in his eyes.

After all, she's had a very tough time these past two days.

After all, she had to write so many reports and records from her travels among the people, one after another, and she also had to write a memorial requesting an audience with Cain after he woke up. Shangguan Wan'er was also very meticulous about her writing, requiring each character to be clear and beautiful, which slowed down her writing speed. Cain, who couldn't write calligraphy, could only watch from the side and fell asleep without realizing it. It seemed that Shangguan Wan'er finally put down her pen and fell asleep on the table in the early hours of the morning.

How heartwarming... Mom and Dad...

Shangguan Wan'er seemed to be having a beautiful dream.

"Hmm..." In response to Cain's caresses, Shangguan Wan'er let out a cute soft hum, but did not wake up. She seemed to be sleeping even more soundly, with a slight smile on her lips.

Cain couldn't help but smile. This was the first time he had seen Shangguan Wan'er like this, like she was taking care of a little sister.

"You worked so hard last night, so get some more sleep today and make sure you're well-rested. Anyway, it's still early before we meet Her Majesty the Empress," Cain said softly. He picked up the blanket from the bed and covered her with it.

After doing these things, he left the room.

The bright morning sunlight greets the eye, and a fence encloses this small world. A wooden gate marks the entrance, leading to a small courtyard.

The surroundings were quiet and deserted. He walked to the door and looked around, but didn't see anyone. Fifty meters away, there was a tall wall surrounding the area, suggesting it was a remote place.

He went to the back of the house and immediately saw the towering, magnificent palace not far away. Its golden light was still dazzling in the daytime. He saw that Cain was inside the Daming Palace, but in the very corner.

"Is this the Daming Palace? I've seen it in game CG before, but seeing it in real life is even more breathtaking," Cain exclaimed.

At this moment, the door to the room opened, and Shangguan Wan'er came out.

"What's wrong with you?!" Cain exclaimed in surprise.

Shangguan Wan'er was dressed in men's clothing, with a men's hairstyle. She had a pretty face, a flat chest, and slender hands holding a fan. She looked exactly like a handsome young man.

Knowing her gender, Cain couldn't help but exclaim, "What a beautiful woman dressed as a man!"

"Is there something wrong? Only Your Majesty and you know that I am a woman. This is my job, so please don't ask any more questions. Now that you're up, let's go see Her Majesty the Empress." Shangguan Wan'er didn't care at all.

It's so big, but now it's just a plain. How did that happen? Don't you feel suffocated? Cain looked at Shangguan Wan'er's back, feeling very curious.

……

Daming Palace is enormous, with numerous buildings that make it easy to get lost. However, Shangguan Wan'er skillfully led Cain through alleys, across wide avenues, and past luxurious palaces.

Every day at dawn, the palace gates would be opened by the sound of drums, and officials would ascend the steps of Chonghua Terrace to pay their respects and report on state affairs.

After Shangguan Wan'er revealed her identity, the soldiers at the palace gate let her in. As soon as she entered, Cain discovered that Shangguan Wan'er was gone, and he was all alone.

The palace was resplendent with gold and jade, with towering pillars supporting the building and golden dragons coiling around them. At the far end of the spacious area was a magnificent throne, where the majestic Empress Wu Zetian sat, flanked by rows of ministers, creating a solemn atmosphere.

Cain had a vague feeling that something was wrong, especially with some of the ministers present, whose hostility was particularly evident, even though Cain didn't seem to have offended them.

"So you are Cain?" Empress Wu Zetian looked down at Cain.

"Yes, Your Majesty the Empress." Cain, who had wanted to ask Shangguan Wan'er for advice on how to speak, could only bite the bullet and, recalling the ancient dramas he had watched before, bow and salute.

"How dare you, you impudent scoundrel! Why do you not kneel before His Majesty's magnificent presence!" At this moment, a minister at the end suddenly stood up and questioned Cain.

“Your Majesty, I am a Westerner and am unfamiliar with Eastern etiquette. Please forgive me.” Cain bowed to Wu Zetian and ignored the minister.

"It's alright." Wu Zetian didn't care.

“Speaking of rudeness, Minister Zhang, it seems you are the one who is rude.” Wu Zetian looked at the minister with her eyes half-open.

"I haven't even spoken yet, and you've already relayed my message." The ordinary words carried a chilling intent.

"Please calm your anger, Your Majesty." Zhang Qing immediately broke out in a cold sweat, his lips trembling as he knelt down.

"General Cheng Yaojin said you saved the Great Wall, and the Great Wall military report also said so, deciding victory with just one arrow. Meeting you today, you are indeed extraordinary, a man of great talent. I admire you very much." Wu Zetian smiled, gazing at Cain, trying to see through him.

"I dare not accept such praise, Your Majesty."

"I have always been able to distinguish right from wrong and reward and punish fairly. Your saving of the Great Wall is a first-class merit, and you are entitled to a reward of ten thousand taels of gold, an official title, and a noble rank. What official position do you wish to hold?" Wu Zetian asked.

“Your Majesty, saving the Great Wall was not my achievement alone, but also the work of the entire Great Wall Guard. Moreover, I do not wish to hold any official position or be granted a title.”

"Of course I know that. They all received their due rewards. So what about you? Why don't you want to achieve great things that so many people want?" Wu Zetian found it amusing.

“Your Majesty, I have no interest in officialdom. I am used to being free and undisciplined and I am unfamiliar with the rules of officialdom. I am afraid of violating them,” Cain said honestly to Wu Zetian.

Cain disliked the backstabbing and intrigue of officialdom. His concept of being an official was that it would be extremely tiring, with numerous tasks, and it would be easy to die from overwork. He also did not want to be a corrupt official.

"What you don't know, you can learn; what you don't understand, you can ask; what you don't know about the rules of officialdom, you can learn them gradually. I really need someone like you. If you agree, I will appoint you as Grand General and give you control of the military. What do you say?"

These words immediately caused an uproar in the court, with much discussion taking place.

The position of Grand General is the highest military rank, and there are only a handful of such positions available today. Now, they are going to appoint a young man who looks to be in his early twenties as Grand General!

Everyone says the Empress loves talent, but isn't this a bit too much, especially since the other party is a Westerner...
