Chapter 29 Falling into a Bear's Den
Besides, the woman seemed dizzy for a while after falling into the abyss. She felt a little cold, but it was quite comfortable to have something warm under her head, so she thought she'd sleep a little longer. She turned over and decided to continue her sweet dream, hugging the warm thing. But the warm thing wasn't still; it kept nudging her face with its mouth. The woman was a little angry. She was already annoyed that it was disturbing her sleep, and who else but Murong Junlan dared to be so bold? Hmm, why is it so fluffy? The woman opened her sleepy eyes and looked—what the heck? Why was she sleeping with a bear?
Seeing that the woman had woken up, the bear tried to nudge her with its large nose, but the woman dodged it in disgust. The bear then lay down on its own, and at that moment, two cubs rushed up to their mother and began to nurse. The bear winked at her innocently, as if inviting her to nurse.
"Please let me have some milk? No need to be polite, I'm not used to eating like this."
"You can go and have some milk, it's delicious." A child's voice suddenly came from behind, and then a little boy rushed up from behind without hesitation and lay down with the two little bears to drink milk.
The woman stared in astonishment at this seemingly harmonious scene, feeling as if she had stepped into a fairytale world. She surveyed her surroundings and discovered she was in a natural stone cave, spacious enough to be a hundred square meters in size and nearly two stories high. On the east side, there was a rock resembling a bed, upon which were piled several animal furs. Next was the bear's den, also covered with several animal furs; perhaps the bear preferred, as a thin layer of dry, soft grass had been added on top. Further on was a small storage room containing several bows and arrows and spears. The entire cave was spotless, devoid of any unnecessary waste. The woman then noticed that she herself was wrapped in a fox fur coat, apparently given to her by the little boy.
The little boy drank his milk for a while, then patted his bulging belly, looking quite satisfied. Seeing the woman still sitting there, he suddenly blinked his innocent eyes and asked, "Sister, don't you like milk?"
The woman smiled, unsure what to say, and awkwardly replied, "I'm not used to it."
“You won’t have any strength if you don’t drink milk. But I’ll go hunt a snow rabbit for you later and roast it. It would be great if we could find a wolf, then the bear wouldn’t have to go out to find food.” After saying that, the little boy got up, picked up his bow and arrows, and prepared to go out of the cave.
"Hey, are you going alone?" The woman became nervous when she heard that they were going to catch wolves.
“Yes.” The boy blinked his pure, innocent eyes again. “The little bear isn’t full yet, and the bear is busy.”
Hearing what the little boy said, the woman had a guess in mind, "Is it usually just you and the bear together?"
"Mmm." The little boy grinned at the woman, revealing two cute little tiger teeth. "Sister, I'll be back soon." Without waiting for the woman to speak, the little boy left the cave.
"Be careful!" the woman shouted at the cave entrance.
"understood."
The woman stood up and walked towards the cave entrance. The sight outside was truly startling: a vast expanse of white snow stretching as far as the eye could see. She looked around, but the little boy was nowhere to be seen. She felt a pang of regret; she should have followed him.
Only now did the woman recall falling into the abyss in the Wubei Kingdom. She hadn't yet had a chance to ask the little boy how she ended up in this icy wasteland. Where were Murong Junlan and Jiang He? Had they fallen into the snow and been buried? Thinking this, the woman prepared to search for them. After a few steps, she became worried. With everything covered in white snow, where could she even begin to look? Considering Murong Junlan and Jiang He's martial arts skills, she suddenly felt her worries were unnecessary. Besides, she was utterly powerless, even weaker than a child. "Never mind," she thought, "I'll wait for the little boy to return."
Inside the cave, the two bear cubs, having eaten their fill, slept peacefully near their mother—a heartwarming scene. When the woman returned, the bear blinked its adorable eyes, beckoning her to nurse. The woman was indeed thirsty; if she didn't nurse, she'd have to go outside and grab some snow. Sometimes, the mind is strange; if you don't think about being thirsty, you might not feel very thirsty, but once you do, your subconscious makes you increasingly thirsty. The woman struggled with her thoughts, thinking that the snow outside wasn't hygienic enough, and what if she got sick? Besides, snow couldn't compare to bear milk; bear milk was warmer. Thinking this, the woman became restless. She steeled herself; the little boy wasn't there, and the bear couldn't speak, so she wouldn't feel awkward eating it. So she reluctantly approached the bear. Seeing her approach, the bear obediently tilted its belly back, a welcoming gesture. The woman gritted her teeth, bent down, and began to nurse. Hmm, it tasted good—unpolluted, natural food, quite expensive in the 21st century. The only drawback was a slightly sour bear smell.
Time passed before she knew it. While the woman was still studying the taste of the bear milk, a little boy's excited voice suddenly rang out behind her: "Sister, I killed a wolf!" He then threw a wolf off his body.
The woman, caught red-handed by the little boy, looked embarrassed as she climbed off the bear. The boy suddenly gave her a sly smile and asked, "Is bear milk tasty?" The woman wanted to disappear into the ground. She glared at the boy, knowing he was doing it on purpose.
"Sister, come help me!" The little boy carried the wolf to another small hole outside the cave and began to butcher it. His movements were practiced; in a few quick movements, he separated the wolf into usable and useless parts. He skewered the wolf meat with branches, placed it on a wooden rack, then went to the wall to fetch some firewood he had prepared beforehand. He grabbed an iron awl, started a fire on a rock, and began to roast the wolf. Watching all this, the woman's impression of the little boy and his abilities was completely changed, and she also felt utterly worthless.
"Sister, can you call the bear out for me? It loves to eat raw meat."
Call it a bear? How do you call it that?
The little boy noticed her predicament and added, "If you say there's meat to eat, it will come out." So the woman went inside and called the bear out. The bear ate the entrails and raw meat, then went back into its den to see its cubs.
Sitting around the roaring campfire, the woman had a strange feeling. If it weren't for the aroma of wolf meat, she wouldn't have believed she was in such a snowy landscape; she would have thought she was watching television.
"Did you save me?" the woman asked, looking at the little boy who was intently grilling meat.
"Yes. When I was hunting, I found you hanging unconscious from a tree branch. It took a lot of effort to get you down." The little boy looked at the woman curiously, "Sister, how did you get stuck in the tree branch?"
"I don't know, I've fallen into an abyss."
"Abyss?" The little boy didn't understand what an abyss was, and his face showed some confusion. "But luckily you're hanging in a tree. If you had fallen into the snow, you might have been eaten by wolves."
"Yes, it was truly fortunate." The woman looked at the little boy gratefully. "Thank you for saving me. I still don't know your name."
"I forgot, it was the bear that raised me."
"A brat?"
“That year, our village was occupied by evil people, and everyone in the village was killed. I stood there crying my heart out. That night, a bear came down from the mountain looking for food and rescued me, bringing me back here. Later, the bear had cubs, and I had milk to drink…” The little boy, being just a child, seemed to forget his past pain as he spoke, continuing to talk about how he practiced hunting and how he skinned tigers to make fur coats. The woman listened, her heart deeply shaken. She could imagine the unbearable past that such a child had endured. Was this the inhuman slaughter caused by humanity's inflated desires? Why had humanity fallen into such a state of existence? Terrible desires, terrible desires!
"Sister, do you think I should take revenge?"
"This..." Looking into those bright, innocent eyes, the woman was speechless for a moment. She didn't know how to answer the question.
"If I kill them, will their children become homeless like me?"
This question pierced the woman's heart like a bayonet. She thought, "Cruel people, they shouldn't so heartlessly throw such a cruel question at a child." So she said, "Yes."
"Should I still seek revenge?" The little boy waited patiently for the woman's answer.
"Let's talk about it when you're older."
"Sister, the meat is cooked, mmm, it smells so good." The little boy seemed to have forgotten what he had just said; he tore off a piece and handed it to the woman. "Try it."
The woman took a bite and exclaimed, "It smells delicious!" She gave the little boy a thumbs up.
"Sister, if you like it, I'll make it for you to eat every day, okay?"
"Okay, take me with you next time."
"Ah."
The woman thought for a moment and said, "I suddenly thought of a name for you, I don't know if you'll like it?"
"What's your name?" the little boy asked expectantly.
"Since you were raised by a bear, how about we name you Bear Baby?"
"Bear Baby, great! I love it! I'll be called Bear Baby from now on!" The little boy grabbed a piece of meat, rushed into the cave, stuffed the meat into the bear's mouth, and excitedly hugged the bear, shouting, "I have a name now! I'm called Bear Baby!"
