The eve of dawn is the darkest; the stars have already shifted, the moon has already set, and the belly of the moon on the eastern horizon has not yet appeared.

Lin Ping, clad in armor, rode a tall horse at the very front of the stone bridge, with Jiang Yunying and Lin Xiaomei protecting him on either side.

With these two beautiful bodyguards by his side, Lin Ping was not worried at all about a surprise attack from the enemy.

"Even if it's fast, can it be faster than the longsword in my wife's hand?" Lin Ping felt very at ease.

Two thousand cavalry followed behind, the solid sound of their hooves causing the entire bridge to tremble with each landing.

Lin Ping dared not let them charge, fearing that the resonance would cause the bridge to collapse, and also to give the thousand soldiers with knives time to prepare.

"Enemies!" The enemy on the other side of the bridge spotted the city lord's army and hurriedly began to assemble. The V-shaped formation of troops drew their longbows and aimed at the bridgehead.

"Stop!" Lin Ping shouted in a drawn-out tone, just outside the enemy's firing range.

"So there really was an ambush!" Jiang Xiuwen stared at the opposite bank and let out a long sigh, vaguely admiring Lin Ping's skills, but said coldly, "Like a blind cat catching a dead mouse!"

Jiang Xiuwen was a seasoned veteran, and seeing this situation, he would likely go berserk and charge forward without thinking twice, his strong legs involuntarily gripping the horse's belly.

"Uncle, please calm down. It's not too late to attack later." Lin Ping stood in front of Jiang Xiuwen, thankful that it was his father-in-law who stayed in the main city, not him. Otherwise, the enemy would have had to take the initiative to attack when they attacked the city, thus wasting the advantageous defensive system and suffering a crushing defeat.

The reason for sending him along with the army was ostensibly to maintain appearances, but in reality, it was to keep him in check and prevent him from ruining the important mission.

"Who goes there? Why are you blocking my way?" Lin Ping shouted at the top of his lungs, trying to make sure that the axemen lying in ambush below the riverbank could hear him.

The other side remained silent, instead tensing their bowstring, ready to attack at any moment.

"We are from the Jiangcheng City Lord's Mansion, on our way to Yancheng to participate in the competition. Please make way for us," Lin Ping continued to shout loudly.

The other party was delighted upon hearing this. They had been worried about calling the wrong person, but now they could finally take a gamble.

A full incense stick's time had passed since the words were spoken, and there was still no response from the other party, which fully proved their intention: to stop them without revealing their identities. For this reason, they did not even wear the clothes unique to the Mountain City Lord's Mansion.

"Get out of the way right now, or don't blame me for being impolite!" Lin Ping shouted as he used his right eye to watch the axemen's progress.

Enveloped in darkness, these people carefully climbed onto the riverbank, crawling forward with their bodies close to the ground. Even if they made some noise, it was drowned out by Lin Ping's loud voice.

"All troops, listen to my command! Charge!" Lin Ping raised his spear high and shouted the order. The two thousand cavalrymen marched in place in perfect unison, instantly creating an overwhelming momentum.

"Release the arrows!" the enemy sneered, as thousands of cold, feathered arrows blotted out the sky and headed straight for Lin Ping.

Lin Ping had to admit that the Mountain City Lord's sword was sharp and his bow was powerful, with a range of three hundred meters. Fortunately, the army had not moved an inch.

This volley of arrows was the signal Lin Ping had agreed upon with the axemen. A thousand private soldiers, who had been lying in ambush behind the enemy, quickly launched a charge, wielding their vicious and unpredictable kukri knives with great force.

Enemies who reacted a little slower were cleaved in two, and those who managed to turn around had their arms and hands cut off, losing most of their fighting ability.

Even those who dared to raise longbows to defend themselves were doomed to be cleaved in two; the power of the kukri was beyond the enemy's imagination, rendering the bamboo-made longbows utterly ineffective. Even the sturdy armor would be cleaved through.

After a round of fighting, nearly half of the thousands of enemies were killed or wounded. They no longer dared to raise their longbows for ranged attacks and instead drew their swords from their waists.

"Uncle, it's your turn to perform," Lin Ping said casually, not believing that the enemy had any room to retaliate.

Archers' greatest nightmare is being approached by swordsmen and axemen. Now, having discarded their longbows and drawn short swords, they have become easy targets for cavalry.

"You son of a bitch, grandpa's here!" Jiang Xiuwen cursed as he charged forward, as if venting all his pent-up anger.

Over the past few decades, he had had enough. If it weren't for the old city lord's instructions, he would have wanted to challenge the mountain city lord long ago, and even if he died in battle, he would take as many people down with him.

Now that Lin Ping has created an opportunity for him, and a sure-fire one at that, how could he possibly let it go?

Two thousand iron cavalry followed Jiang Xiuwen in the charge, and in an instant they reached the other side. The spears in their hands, which were more than ten feet long, came in handy. They could break through the enemy's armor with just the impact of the warhorses, without having to exert any force.

In actual combat, it was proven that the spears and lances with the changed spearheads were much more powerful and became a complete nightmare for the enemy.

Jiang Xiuwen was even more bloodthirsty, riding his warhorse and constantly maneuvering around, even stopping directly in the middle of the enemy, wildly waving his spear.

This was a one-sided massacre. The terrified enemies were trembling with fear, and had no fighting power left. They were either cleaved in two by kukri knives, pierced by spears, or trampled into mincemeat by the iron cavalry.

As the eastern horizon brightened, the bloody scene became vivid in my mind's eye. The air was filled with the smell of blood, and limbs lay scattered haphazardly on the grass.

"Wife, I'm scared." Lin Ping took the opportunity to snuggle into Jiang Yunying's arms, rubbing his head against hers repeatedly.

"Don't be afraid, my husband, I'm here!" Jiang Yunying gently stroked Lin Ping's head, genuinely believing that he was afraid of blood.

However, just as the fighting was about to end, Lin Ping, blindfolded, shouted loudly, "Kill them all, leave no one alive!"

Nearly a hundred enemies had already lost their weapons, but because of Lin Ping's words, they lost their lives.

This is not because Lin Ping is cruel, but because he lacks compassion; being kind to the enemy is being cruel to himself.

Even if these hundred men have little fighting ability, they have witnessed the cruelty of the dog-leg knife. Once its shape is revealed, it could potentially deal a fatal blow to the city lord's mansion, at the very least eliminating their advantage in weaponry.

To prevent the enemy from discovering the secret, Lin Ping even ordered his private soldiers to carry their stirrups in their pockets, slung knives in their sheaths, and even wrap the blades of their spears and lances in black cloth, which they would never remove unless in battle.

"Hahaha! That was exhilarating, so exhilarating!" Jiang Xiuwen, covered in blood, laughed heartily, even thinking of using his three thousand elite troops to flatten the main city of Shancheng. After all, the power of the dog-leg knife and the new-style spear had impressed him.

"What a fine nephew-in-law! He's truly a lucky star for my city lord's mansion. Uncle was right about him!" Jiang Xiuwen walked up to Lin Ping with a fawning smile and showered him with praise.

"Uncle, that's not what you said before..." Jiang Yunying was speechless, and deeply understood a saying: A man's mouth is a lying devil.

Lin Ping was like that, Jiang Yunyu was like that, and even the stern-faced Jiang Xiuwen was like that.

Jiang Yunying felt a chill in her heart. She really wanted to hide in a corner and be quiet, preferably in a world without men.
