Remarrying Chun Yuan

Chapter 2 Decent

Yuancuo.

He was Wei Gongming's childhood friend.

Their mothers were close friends. Wei Gongming's mother married into the prestigious Zhenning Marquis, while Yuan Cuo's mother chose an ordinary minor post in the Ministry of Works, a mundane and unremarkable position.

In his previous life, Wei Gongming always looked down on Yuan Cuo, laughing at him for being full of poetry and books but having nowhere to use them, and that he was not as useful as a carpenter working on the street.

But Liu Yuechu has always thought highly of this person.

Although Yuan Cuo's life was not wealthy, it was exceptionally carefree. He would travel from time to time and write travelogues describing the customs, food, anecdotes, and interesting stories of various places. Occasionally, he would go out to collect herbs for a period of time, and upon returning, he would set up a small stall on the street to treat the people.

He didn't charge money for his medical treatments, so the people would give him food and daily necessities, even a bowl of cold water with dried dates.

In her previous life, Liu Yuechu had intended to recruit Yuan Cuo to work at the trading company, but Wei Gongming sternly stopped her and even threw a tantrum. He told her to uphold the virtues of a woman and not to be fickle with outsiders.

Since then, Liu Yuechu has rarely heard the name "Yuancuo".

The next news about Yuancuo was ten years later.

Someone traveled thousands of miles to send back Yuan Cuo's relics, which included a complete map of the Great Qi territory and marking the mineral veins.

The emperor was overjoyed and immediately sent people to confirm and excavate the site, producing even better weapons. As a result, the Great Qi rose from the bottom of the Seven Kingdoms to fourth place, no longer having to endure foreign invasions and extortion, and finally able to stand tall with its head held high.

The imperial court posthumously conferred upon Yuan Cuo the title of Duke of Baoguo, because he was a hero of the Great Qi.

But no matter how many titles he held, they were useless. Yuan Cuo's parents died early, and he never married, leaving no heirs.

Wei Gongming harbored resentment and had been bitterly criticizing him for many years.

Upon seeing the legendary figure from her past life again, Liu Yuechu's thoughts raced, and she momentarily froze, lost in thought.

"Master, shall we go in or not?" Bai Shao urged from the side.

Liu Yuechu slowly came to her senses and then had the carriage stop in front of the trading company. "What did that person come here for?" she asked the manager, Wang Fu.

Wang Fu cursed, "An arrogant scholar dares to want to see the master's map of the southwestern frontier? Is that something an ordinary person can see?! If it weren't for his occasional help in treating the sick, I wouldn't have bothered with him at all!"

Liu Yuechu suddenly realized that her father's map of the southwestern frontier not only included the mountains and landforms of the Great Qi, but also the deserts and wilderness of neighboring countries.

At this point, he was already thinking about drawing a map of the Great Qi territory.

Wang Fu kept babbling on, "I've already said that it's a family heirloom of the Liu family. Only the emperor and princes in the palace have seen it, and they dare not show it to outsiders. Yet he keeps pestering me and doesn't even know who he is!"

Who do you think you are?

What do you know?

He was a great benefactor of the State of Qi!

Liu Yuechu gave him a disgruntled sideways glance, and Wang Fu could only obediently shut up.

She put the matter aside, went inside to check the accounts, and then asked Wang Fu to notify the other managers to come over for a meeting, as she had important matters to discuss.

Wang Fu pressed for details, but Liu Yuechu did not elaborate.

He was an old man left behind by his father before he left the capital. He was loyal to the Liu family, but not to her.

Sure enough, when she suggested reducing the sale of antiques and calligraphy to focus on rice, grain, cotton, and hemp, Wang Fu was the first to disagree. In his eyes, Liu Yuechu didn't have memories of her past life; she was just an innocent young girl from a sheltered family, and her suggestion was tantamount to squandering money.

Liu Yuechu's mother passed away three years ago. Her father, heartbroken, abandoned the family business and went traveling the world. She also has a dissolute older brother who is currently living a life of debauchery. Her two younger siblings, born out of wedlock, were given enough money by their father before he left the capital to live comfortably for the rest of their lives, and they were forbidden from having any connection with the Liu family's property.

All matters, big and small, of the Liu family can only be handled by Liu Yuechu.

It's not that she's particularly capable; she simply had no other choice...

The managers chattered on and on, wondering who could bear to give up the refined business of calligraphy, paintings, and antiques in favor of selling cotton, grain, oil, and coal. Liu Yuechu, however, paid no heed and leisurely sipped her tea.

When they ran out of ideas, Liu Yuechu smiled and said, "Since Father has chosen me to lead the Liu family, can't I just lose however I want? Besides, I'm only reducing the assets, not quitting altogether. Please allow me to be presumptuous this once and take out some silver to try it out, okay?"

She wouldn't say that her father's business of selling calligraphy and paintings was a waste of his wealth, and that the sky-high prices were simply due to the current emperor's fondness for them.

A devastating snowstorm followed by a rampant epidemic. With even basic necessities like food and drink becoming a problem, who had the leisure or inclination to appreciate antiques and calligraphy?

As soon as the disaster began, the Liu family's business plummeted.

After she got married, her eldest brother squandered all her money within a few years.

The person who encouraged his elder brother to squander money was Wei Gongming.

He taught his elder brother to live life as he pleased, knowing he'd clean up any messes he got into. But the price of cleaning up was that the Liu family's treasures would belong to him.

In the end, the Liu family was left empty-handed, while the Zhenning Marquis's mansion amassed a fortune, and the group of people thanked him with beaming smiles...

Liu Yuechu ignored Wang Fu and the stewards' dissatisfaction and returned to the Liu residence with her maids.

The area outside the Liu residence was not quiet at this time, as Wei Gongming had been waiting there for Liu Yuechu.

Hearing the approaching sound of a carriage, he carried a kite to greet it.

Bai Shao saw this through the gap in the curtain and immediately reported, "Why is the person who picked up the kite here at your residence?"

Liu Yuechu was surprised; they hadn't actually gotten rid of him?

"You stay and ask around."

Bai Shao obeyed the order and got off the bus.

The gatekeeper lifted the threshold, and the carriage went directly into the mansion.

Wei Gongming's face turned red, and his fists clenched. He hadn't expected that Liu Yuechu wouldn't even see him!

But thinking of his impoverished home and debts, he could only confide his dissatisfaction and doubts to Bai Shao.

Bai Shao returned to the inner courtyard and reported, "...Young Master Wei did not believe that the kite in his hand was made by you. He asked the manor to bring out the master's kite for him to see, but he still refused to return the kite in his hand."

Liu Yuechu looked serious; this wasn't like Wei Gongming's usual style!

When the two first met in their past life, he returned the kite and wanted to leave. However, knowing that the kite represented a marriage proposal, he immediately refused and only agreed after much negotiation.

But in this life, he arrived at Jingchun Tower with a kite a day early, and even chased after her to the Liu residence...

Liu Yuechu rubbed her temples. She thought of a possibility: Did he, like her, also have memories of his past life and want to use the Liu family as a stepping stone?

I thought I could easily dismiss these strangers, but it seems things might be a bit more complicated now.

She wasn't afraid of Wei Gongming's entanglement, but rather of the Liu family forcing her to marry.

Not only was the eldest brother always eyeing the Liu family's business, but two uncles who only received dividends were also eyeing it covetously.

The Liu family is small, but none of them are easy to deal with.

"I'm tired today and don't have time to entertain him. Tell him to come back in a couple of days."

Bai Shao went to deal with it, and Liu Yuechu had no intention of resting, so she took Huajiao to the study.

Could we just make a paper kite to get by?

If I had known this would happen, I would have had my father make more...

After a busy night, as dawn broke, Liu Yuechu admitted defeat.

Her father was a master painter, but she was not proficient in painting and could not imitate his style at all.

Should we just take the original and paste it together?

She immediately felt a pang of heartache.

That was a priceless treasure, and she couldn't bear to part with it to appease Wei Gongming, that gigolo.

After bathing and washing up, Liu Yuechu sat in the courtyard pavilion and ate breakfast.

The errand girl came to deliver a message, "Miss, Young Master Wei from the Zhenning Marquis's residence is here again..."

"Dangdang!"

The rice bowl was placed on the table.

Does Wei Gongming have no sense of decency at all?!
