Remarrying Chun Yuan

Chapter 120 Entering the Water

Yuan Cuo knew things might not be simple once he entered the courtyard, but he had no interest in Liu Yuechan. "How does my wife expect me to answer this question?"

Liu Yuechu hissed, as if there really was no standard answer?

"How would I know how you want to answer?" she suddenly said, resorting to unreasonable arguments.

Yuan Cuo laughed out loud, "So my wife is jealous, which proves that she has me in her heart."

The weight on his heart finally lifted.

They repeatedly fed him tonics and urged him to leave the capital to travel to the Great Qi Kingdom to fulfill his wishes.

No matter which item she picked out, you couldn't tell that she was reluctant to part with it.

It was as if he had truly left, and she had fulfilled her life's greatest ambition, leaving him feeling conflicted and uncertain.

Liu Yuechu was confused at first. Did she have feelings for him? Yes, she did, but the extent of those feelings was worth considering.

But she didn't have much time to think it over, because Wei Gongming had already led the yamen runners to search the area.

As soon as Wei Gongming entered, he saw Liu Yuechu and Yuan Cuo smiling sweetly at each other under the tree. Instantly, his fists clenched, and his eyes were filled with intense hatred, as if he had met his enemy!

This woman was supposed to be his, but now she's with the brother he grew up with!

He wished he could go back to the beginning of his rebirth and strangle Yuan Cuo immediately, so that this embarrassing scene wouldn't have happened!

Upon seeing Wei Gongming, Yuan Cuo whispered to Liu Yuechu, "I think I'd better go and say hello."

Liu Yuechu nodded slightly and turned back into the inner room. She didn't intend to talk to Wei Gongming, after all, there was still Liu Yuechan inside who needed to be appeased.

Yuan Cuo walked toward Wei Gongming, but Wei Gongming did not intend to pay him any attention.

He called Liu Muchi over to talk, asking how many courtyards and rooms the Liu family had, and how many artificial hills and ponds the Liu family owned.

Liu Muchi kept his head down as he answered, his hands clasped together and sweating profusely, as if he had just been pulled out of the water.

His second sister and brother-in-law could chat and laugh calmly, but he didn't have that kind of composure. He had never interacted with government officials before, so he was tense all over, stammered when he spoke, and kept glancing towards the pond, afraid that the yamen runners there would notice something amiss.

Having served as an official for two generations, how could Wei Gongming not have noticed that something was amiss with Liu Muchi?

He gestured with his chin toward the constables, who immediately ran toward the pond!

Liu Muchi was shocked and quickly lowered his head.

Yuan Cuo walked over at this moment. "I am in charge of most of the major and minor affairs in the manor. Gongming, you should ask me directly." He was tall and blocked Liu Muchi's view.

Wei Gongming was even angrier upon hearing this, "You're really doing a great job as a live-in son-in-law. You can save on hiring a few old maids in the mansion."

"I did what I could, and it's no big deal." Yuan Cuo was very calm. He had been living alone since he was twelve years old and no longer distinguished between the inner and outer quarters.

Wei Gongming didn't want to talk to him anymore, fearing that continuing the conversation would cause him to lose his temper. He was now facing difficulties and could no longer behave as recklessly as he had in his previous life.

The constables returned quickly, but found nothing. Liu Muchi subconsciously wiped away a bead of sweat.

"Are you sure there's nothing there?" Wei Gongming kept staring at Liu Muchi; there was definitely something wrong with this person!

“The pond is not deep, but the water is not clear, and the bottom cannot be seen. There are no traces around it either,” the constables immediately reported.

Wei Gongming looked at Liu Muchi and asked, "Then what are you panicking about?"

Liu Muchi stiffened, then quickly waved his hands, "Ah? No, I'm not panicking..."

"Search in the water!" Wei Gongming strode straight towards the pond, unwilling to believe there was nothing wrong there.

Liu Muchi's face turned deathly pale, and he stood there dumbfounded. Wouldn't searching the pond expose their deception?!

Yuan Cuo remained calm. "Go tell your sister that I'll go with her first." He didn't allow Liu Muchi to say anything more and pushed him into the house.

Liu Yuechu had already heard the conversation outside. When she saw Liu Muchi come in with a guilty look on his face, she simply patted him gently.

How can a mere child who has just entered the world compare to Wei Gongming, a cunning old fox who has lived two lives?

"You stay here with Yuechan, I'll go check on things."

She didn't know what would happen, but she was already considering what price she would have to pay to shut Wei Gongming up if things were exposed!

The county officials had already arrived at the pond.

Although it was May and not cold, the pond had not been cleaned very well, and the constables did not want to go down into it.

"Sir, just look at it and that's enough. Or bring a fishing net and scoop it up from the water."

"This pond isn't very deep to begin with, and if you go in, you'll get covered in fishy stench. These clothes were just washed..."

“I also think it’s unnecessary to go down. Or should we have the Liu family send someone into the water to take a look? We still need to continue searching later, and we don’t have any clothes to change into if they get dirty.”

……

The yamen runners had a valid reason; they just felt that Wei Gongming was being nosy. If he really wanted to embarrass the Liu family, he wouldn't have treated them like cattle and horses.

Wei Gongming was immediately extremely dissatisfied!

He wouldn't have cared about it on other days, but today, in the Liu family, and in front of Yuan Cuo, his dignity was ruthlessly trampled on by a group of his subordinates!

"If you refuse to go into the water, then I will go myself!"

"Okay, okay, let's go!"

The constables were very dissatisfied, but dared not argue back. They could only take off their clothes and writhe as they went into the water.

A fishy smell wafted from the water, forcing them to hold their breath and only wanting to quickly search the area and get it over with.

Wei Gongming did not stare at the yamen runners, but looked at Yuan Cuo to the side.

"Who was that person just now?" He didn't remember Liu Muchi.

"Liu family's third son, you don't even know?" Yuan Cuo said calmly.

Wei Gongming understood. "How would I know?"

"Now that Prince Wei is an official in the county government of the capital, isn't it only natural that he knows the situation in each prefecture?" Yuan Cuo's words were full of sarcasm.

He thought that Wei Gongming had thoroughly investigated the Liu family, young and old, when he was so eager to marry Liu Yuechu.

Wei Gongming was momentarily speechless. Just as he was about to retort, Liu Yuechu gracefully approached with her maids.

"Lord Wei is indeed meticulous in his work, leaving no blind spot. I wonder if the other residences are investigated in the same way, or if this is just targeting the Liu family?"

There's no need to overthink Wei Gongming's platitudes: "If someone saw him jump over the Liu family's wall, naturally the Liu family will be investigated more thoroughly. If they really find nothing, it will clear the Liu family's name."

"So, I should thank Lord Wei? Then please shout a few more times at the Liu family's gate before you leave, that this matter has nothing to do with the Liu family."

Liu Yuechu instructed Huajiao to prepare hot tea and clean water, "The pond to the west has been neglected for a long time, and the servants are lazy and haven't cleaned the silt. We can't have the officials coming up here all dirty..."

"That's right! If we had known we'd be rolling around in the mud, we would have brought down two nets and helped Lady Liu with her work!" The constables knew the Liu family was very generous and had received plenty of bribes for their previous favors.

"Get to work and stop talking nonsense." Wei Gongming instructed them to dig a little deeper.

Just as one of the constables was about to turn back and climb out, the constable in front of him, who was groping his way into the water, froze. "Sir, there's something here!"
