Chapter 104 Glory and Trial
Chapter 104: Glory and Trial
In the autumn of the 20th year of the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty, the spread of Buddhism from the Central Plains reached its peak in Siam. The temples built by Jueyuan and others were solemn and majestic, overflowing with incense and worship, attracting a constant stream of believers seeking to worship and learn the Dharma. In the temple courtyard, monks from the Central Plains, clad in robes, explained the essentials of Buddhism to a group of newly initiated disciples, their eyes focused and filled with reverence.
"My fellow students, the practice of Buddhism lies in the awakening of the mind. We need to constantly observe our own hearts and abandon greed, anger, and ignorance." Jueyuan's voice was steady and powerful, echoing in the temple.
However, behind this prosperous scene lies a hidden crisis. Some local religious forces, seeing the Central Plains Buddhism stealing their limelight, are filled with jealousy and resentment. Within a gloomy temple, several local priests gather together, plotting destruction.
"The Central Plains Buddhism is coming in with great force. If this continues, all our believers will be snatched away by them. We must find a way to drive them away." A priest with a face full of flesh said viciously.
"But they have a high prestige among the people. How can we make the people oppose them?" asked another priest with a frown.
"Hmph, we can spread rumors that they have brought disaster and destroyed the peace of our land. Then we can find an opportunity to destroy their temples and make the people lose trust in them." There was a cunning glint in the eyes of the leading priest.
Rumors began to spread in some villages in Siam, and some people who did not know the truth began to doubt and fear the monks from the Central Plains.
Outside a temple built by monks from the Central Plains, a group of villagers gathered and talked.
"I heard that these monks from the Central Plains brought something ominous. Since they came, the harvest of crops in the village has been poor." A villager said worriedly.
"Yes, and their temples are so magnificent. Aren't they suppressing our local gods?" another villager echoed.
When Jueyuan heard these rumors, he was worried. He knew that if they were not stopped, they would cause great damage to the spread of Buddhism in the Central Plains. He called the monks together to discuss countermeasures.
"My fellow brothers, we are now facing a severe test. These rumors are misleading people, and we must clarify them as soon as possible. At the same time, we must protect the temple and believers." Jueyuan said solemnly.
The monks nodded, and an older monk said, "Brother, we can show our kindness to the villagers and do more good deeds for them so that they can see the compassion of the Dharma."
"Good, this is a great plan. But we can't just sit there and wait for death. We need to guard against sabotage by people with ulterior motives." Jueyuan said.
At this moment, Liu Yifeng stepped forward and said, "Master Jueyuan, I have a method. I can draw some paintings to show the story of Master A Ming conquering demons, so that people can believe that Buddhism has a strong power to resist evil."
Jueyuan's eyes lit up: "Donor Liu, this is a very good idea. I'll have to trouble you then."
Liu Yifeng immediately took up his brush and worked day and night in a meditation room within the temple. His paintings depicted Master A Ming as majestic and lifelike, and the scenes of him subduing demons were vivid and lifelike. In the paintings, Master A Ming radiated Buddha's light, and demons fled before him.
Outside the temple, local religious forces also began sabotaging the temple. One night, a group of dark figures quietly approached the temple. They were armed with sticks and torches and attempted to storm the temple.
"Who are you? How dare you act so rudely here!" The monk on night watch discovered them and shouted.
"Hmph, you foreign monks, get out of our land!" a black shadow shouted, then rushed towards the monks.
The monks were not afraid. Although they held on to their compassionate hearts, they also fought back in order to protect the temple and Buddhism. For a moment, shouts of killing rang out outside the temple.
Jueyuan heard the noise and rushed over. He stood at the temple gate, clasped his hands together, and began to recite scriptures. Miraculously, the vandals who rushed ahead stopped in their tracks upon hearing the scriptures, a trace of fear on their faces.
"Don't be blinded by evil. Buddhism aims to save all sentient beings and has no malicious intent." Jueyuan said loudly.
However, some stubborn elements among the vandals still refused to give up. Just when the two sides were deadlocked, Liu Yifeng rushed to the temple gate with his newly completed painting.
He held the painting high and shouted, "Look everyone! This is Master A-Ming defeating the demon. The Dharma has supreme power and can protect us from evil. We monks from the Central Plains come here to spread kindness and compassion, not to bring disaster."
Upon hearing the noise, the villagers rushed over. They were deeply moved by the scene depicted in Liu Yifeng's paintings. Master Amin's sacred image seemed to give them strength and courage.
One villager said: "Perhaps we really have misunderstood these Central Plains monks. They seem so kind, and the Dharma seems to be able to ward off evil."
The other villagers nodded in agreement. Those who had participated in the destruction felt a surge of guilt.
"We were wrong, Master. Please forgive our ignorance." A saboteur put down his weapon and knelt down to Jueyuan.
Jueyuan stepped forward and helped him up. "Admitting one's mistakes and correcting them is the greatest virtue. Buddhism embraces everything. As long as you are willing to let go of your prejudices, you can all enter our Buddhist community and experience the Buddha's compassion."
During this crisis, monks from the Central Plains, relying on their wisdom and the power of Buddhist teachings, successfully overcame resistance from local religious forces. Since then, they have become more proactive in engaging with local people, organizing charity events and providing food and medical assistance to impoverished villagers.
At the same time, Jueyuan also invited local religious figures to the temple and had friendly exchanges with them. He explained the concepts of Central Plains Buddhism to them and listened to their beliefs and culture.
"In fact, our different religious beliefs all have the purpose of guiding people to do good. We should respect each other and work together for the peace and prosperity of this land." Jueyuan said sincerely to a local religious priest.
The priest was moved after hearing Jueyuan's words: "Master, what you said is absolutely right. Perhaps we were too narrow-minded before."
Over time, Central Plains Buddhism not only gained a firm foothold in Siam but also achieved a certain degree of integration with local religious culture. Temples began to incorporate local decorations and rituals, and Central Plains Buddhism continued to spread across this land with a more inclusive and diverse attitude.
The deeds of Jueyuan and others were also reported back to Chang'an. Upon hearing about them, the Tang emperor rewarded them for their achievements and sent more scholars and craftsmen to Siam to further promote cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
On the land of Siam, the Buddhist teachings of the Central Plains and the local culture converged like two rushing rivers, forming a new cultural torrent that nourished the people of this land, allowing them to find spiritual sustenance and peace in the fusion of faith and culture, and also left a good story for cultural exchanges and harmonious coexistence of religions in future generations.
