You are unlucky and I am tough

Chapter 11 Going to the county seat

The road to Chengjia Village is difficult to walk on, and it makes your butt hurt. Fortunately, the road becomes much smoother after leaving Chengjia Village, and the natural scenery along the way is also nice.

After walking for about two quarters of an hour, Cheng Shuang felt that it was rather awkward for the two of them to remain silent for so long, so she found a topic to talk about and asked, "Wei Qinglang, I remember the town is closer, so why don't we go to the town to sell our game instead of going to the county town? Aren't there any restaurants in the town that buy game?"

"Not really." Wei Qinglang, the driver, glanced back at her. "Our village is halfway between Qushan County and Goutou Town. It only takes a quarter of an hour longer to get to the county by donkey cart than to the town. There are only two restaurants in the town that sell game, so the price of game in the county is higher. Besides, if we need everything at home, the county town has a better selection of things."

Cheng Shuang nodded. "You understand it quite clearly. Have you been to other places besides the town and the county?"

"No, I heard that if you go south from the county dock by boat for a day, you will reach Luohe Prefecture, and further south is Donghuang City, which is the provincial capital."

Chengjia Village is located in Qushan County, with a population of over 1,100 and over 120 households. Most nearby villages have populations of only a few hundred people, so Chengjia Village is considered a relatively large village in comparison.

The village has a good geographical location, close to the mountains and the water, and is about the same distance from Qushan County and Goutou Town, so villagers from their village and several nearby villages usually choose to go to the county town to buy things.

The original body used to stay in the village all day long and had only been to the town market a few times, let alone the county town. So apart from knowing that the place she was in was a fictional country called Daliang, Cheng Shuang knew nothing else and could only ask Wei Qinglang.

Wei Qinglang didn't know much, but he could still chat a few words. At least he knew that there were prefectural capitals and provincial capitals above the county town.

The two chatted intermittently and walked for nearly an hour before arriving at the county town gate.

The city gate looked quite grand. As soon as the two arrived at the gate, they saw a long queue of people waiting to enter the city after inspection. There was also a teahouse next to it where those who were tired of waiting could go and have a drink of tea.

Cheng Shuang's butt was sore from riding the donkey cart all the way, so she jumped off the cart and lined up to walk into the city. When she got to the front of the line, she found that she had to pay to enter the city, one cent per person.

She turned around and asked the person behind her, "There's still a fee to enter the city. Do you have money?"

Wei Qinglang handed her two copper coins.

Cheng Shuang had been here for several days and it was the first time she touched a copper coin, but she gave it away before she could even warm it up.

After paying the money and entering the city, a prosperous scene hit me. The streets paved with bluestone slabs were wide and flat, and there were restaurants, diners and shops on both sides of the streets with flags waving.

The streets are bustling with people, the inns and restaurants are full of guests, and the street food stalls are emitting steam and fragrant aromas, which is like two different worlds compared to the simple and poor Chengjia Village.

Cheng Shuang looked around curiously for a while, then asked Wei Qinglang, "Which restaurant are you going to sell this wild boar to?"

Wei Qinglang said, "I've sold prey to Taibai Restaurant before, so I'll go there again this time."

Cheng Shuang: "Then go ahead. I want to walk alone. Shall we meet at the city gate in an hour?"

Wei Qinglang frowned. "There are a lot of things missing at home. I'm going to buy some money later. Don't you want to come with me?"

"You go buy it. This is my first time in the county town and I want to go shopping alone." Cheng Shuang's eyes were evasive, and she was obviously feeling guilty.

Wei Qinglang saw it, thought about it and didn't ask any more questions. He took out a dozen copper coins from his pocket and put them in her hand, "Then be careful and don't forget the time to go back."

There was a handful of copper coins in her palm. Cheng Shuang blinked and looked at the back of the person pulling the donkey cart away in front of her, then looked at the copper coins in her hand and quickly counted them.

It was exactly fifteen cents, and I thought to myself that this kid was a pretty good person.

Curiosity about the unfamiliar dynasty briefly overcame Cheng Shuang's eagerness to make money. She walked excitedly on the bustling street, looking around, and went into every shop. After walking two blocks, she stood in front of a medical clinic called Baicaotang.

After standing at the door for a while to make sure that the clinic had enough traffic and was a profitable place, Cheng Shuang walked in confidently.

She walked straight to the counter and asked an elderly man with white hair and beard, well-dressed and who looked like the owner, "Old man, are you short of doctors in this clinic?"

The old man who was writing looked at her and said, "Please line up in front to see the doctor. This is where you can get medicine."

"No." Cheng Shuang put her hands on the counter, her eyes sparkling. "I'm asking if you need a doctor. I'm a doctor and I can treat illnesses. I'm very skilled."

The old man snorted and laughed without even looking up, "Don't make trouble, little girl. I'm very busy here."

"I came here because I saw you were busy. With so many people waiting in line, wouldn't it be more efficient to have multiple doctors?"

The old man became a little impatient and raised his hand to signal the medicine boy who was responsible for packing the medicine to ask the man to leave.

The medicine boy came out immediately and pushed her out, saying, "Little girl, stop joking. There is not a single female doctor in the entire Qushan County. How old are you and you say you are a doctor? Don't waste time here."

Cheng Shuang didn't expect that she would start off badly. When she was about to be kicked out, she shouted at the old man, "You can't judge a person by appearance. I really can treat illnesses. I really can treat illnesses. If you don't believe me, test me."

As a result, it was heard by others and was ridiculed by even more people.

The medicine boy was still standing at the door to prevent her from running in again. Cheng Shuang sulked at the door with her arms folded.

She never expected that she, a direct descendant of a distinguished family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, would be questioned for her medical skills when she came here.

When her grandfather was alive, he was the reincarnation of Hua Tuo, with people queuing up in front of his store in the middle of the night. She was influenced by him since she was a child. She could take a pulse at the age of six and identify a thousand kinds of medicinal herbs with her eyes blindfolded at the age of eight. She is a child prodigy of traditional Chinese medicine, okay?

Although she was angry, Cheng Shuang quickly figured out her current situation. In feudal dynasties, the status of women was already low, and those who could study medicine or had the talent to study medicine were even rarer. She was only seventeen years old in her current body, so it was no wonder that others did not believe her.

So she still had to find a way to make people here believe that she really knew medical skills.

Just when she was feeling frustrated and thinking about trying her luck in another clinic, there was a sudden commotion in front of her. A middle-aged man rushed into the clinic holding a little boy in luxurious clothes, shouting, "Doctor, doctor, save my young master!"

There was a group of people following behind that man. The man in front was a little fat and had a mustache and was running out of breath. The woman next to him was crying and looking anxious as she ran.

The middle-aged man rushed into the clinic and put the child down. He found that the child's limbs were limp and unable to stand, and he anxiously shouted for a doctor.

The doctor from Baicaotang hurried forward, first flipped the child's eyelids and then grabbed the child's hand to feel the pulse.

Cheng Shuang squeezed in while the chaos was going on. She took a look at the child, whose face was purple, eyes were staring blankly and tail was slightly open, and immediately knew what was going on.

Seeing that the doctor was still wasting time taking his pulse, Cheng Shuang jumped up anxiously, "It's suffocation, something is stuck in his throat. I'll come, I can save him."

Suddenly someone in the crowd shouted. Mr. and Mrs. Lu, who were almost fainting from anxiety, turned around and saw a young girl struggling to squeeze out of the crowd, holding up her hands and shouting, "I know what's going on. I can save him. It's too late now."

Mr. and Mrs. Lu were stunned for a moment. Before they could react, Cheng Shuang rushed over, pushed aside the doctor who was still examining the child, hugged the child from behind, and began to rescue him using the Heimlich maneuver, explaining, "He's not sick, he just choked."

A group of people watched this strange treatment method. Some of them couldn't believe that it could save people. Mr. and Mrs. Lu were so pale that they could hardly stand.

But what no one expected was that after the little girl did the strange pressing action about ten times, the child spit out something from his mouth and then burst into tears.

Cheng Shuang stopped after the child started crying, breathing heavily with exhaustion. Although the child looked only five or six years old, he was so chubby that she almost died of exhaustion.

When she found that the child could already stand, the frightened Mrs. Lu rushed over and hugged him and cried together. Mr. Lu quickly bowed to Cheng Shuang.

"Thank you so much, little girl. Thank you so much! Saving my son today is like saving the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Lu."

Cheng Shuang waved her hand. "No need to thank me, no need to thank me. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. But if you really want to thank me, you can give me a token of your gratitude."

Mr. Lu was stunned for a moment when he looked at the hand extended to him. Then he burst into laughter and waved to the person next to him, "Butler."

The butler immediately stepped forward, took out two silver ingots from his sleeve and placed them in her hand.

Cheng Shuang's hand sank, and she blinked at the white silver ingot, "How much is this?"

"Ten taels of silver." The butler smiled. "Isn't that enough?"

"No, that's enough."

Cheng Shuang immediately put the money into her arms, hid in the space under the cover, and then bowed to Mr. Lu. "Uncle, please be frank. My name is Cheng Shuang and I am from Chengjia Village. I have learned some medical skills since I was a child. If you need anything, you can come to me at any time."

Looking at her age, Mr. Lu was a little bit unconvinced that she could treat a disease, but he still smiled and nodded, "Okay, okay, I'll take note of it."
