Chapter 617 A Choice Must Be Made
"Well, it seems so." Liu San's tone was a little uneasy, his eyes still fixed on Xiaohu.
Qin Cang said nothing more, but turned and walked towards the other side of the camp. His steps were still light and his movements were simple and neat. Liu San followed him subconsciously, and an inexplicable emotion emerged in his heart - a mixture of curiosity and anxiety.
"What are you going to do?" Liu San finally couldn't help asking, with a hint of doubt in his tone.
"Go and see how much food is left." Qin Cang answered simply, his voice calm as if nothing had happened.
Food. This topic made Liu San's heart sink again. Food reserves are an eternal problem, especially in such an environment. Every meal, every sip of water, is the key to their survival. When Qin Cang mentioned food, the calmness and determination in his tone made Liu San feel a little cold in his heart.
"If there is not enough food, we..." Liu San's words gradually paused. He knew that what he wanted to ask was not a question that Qin Cang could answer.
"If it's not enough, we have to find a way." Qin Cang answered concisely, his eyes sweeping towards the woods in the distance, as if he had foreseen the situation that would follow.
The two of them arrived at the storage area, where several bags of dry food were piled. While not abundant, they were enough to sustain them for a few days. Qin Cang squatted down and began to check the markings and weights on the bags. Liu San stood by, his mood growing heavier. Even though he knew Qin Cang disliked procrastination and didn't want to add any unnecessary pressure to them, he couldn't help but speak.
"If there really isn't enough food..." Liu San took a deep breath and tried to make his tone sound calmer. "What should we do? Continue to wait for reinforcements?"
Qin Cang didn't stop moving. He still lowered his head to check the grain bag, as if he hadn't heard Liu San's words at all. But he still responded: "There are no reinforcements, only myself."
Liu San's heart trembled. The man before him always seemed to be able to give the most straightforward answers at the most critical moments. Reinforcements were supposed to be their hope, but Qin Cang had broken through their defenses with one sentenceāreinforcements were just a luxury; he was the most reliable force.
"Then our plan..." Liu San's voice gradually lowered.
"Plans are always changing." Qin Cang raised his head, his eyes still calm, "But no matter how the situation changes, the only thing we can do is survive."
Liu San fell silent. He knew Qin Cang was right. The change in plan was due to the unpredictable external pressures and the unexpected fluctuations in the war situation. Survival was the most fundamental goal. Toward this goal, they had made countless sacrifices and taken countless risks. And now, survival remained their most important issue.
"What if it's not enough?" Liu San suddenly asked. He no longer cared about the details, he just wanted to know the decisive choice.
"Go get it." Qin Cang's words were concise and decisive.
"Take it?" Liu San was stunned. "Take what?"
"Take what you need." Qin Cang raised his head, his eyes still as calm as water. "If there is enough food, we can survive this dark night. If not, then go find it."
"You mean..." Liu San's thoughts suddenly became clear.
"Go get what's left in the hands of the enemy." Qin Cang looked directly into Liu San's eyes. His voice was low, but filled with a resolute coldness. "There's no time to hesitate."
These words flashed through Liu San's mind like a flash of lightning. He knew Qin Cang wasn't joking. The man before him had already calculated everything, even the enemy's remaining resources, becoming a bargaining chip for their survival.
"I understand." Liu San said softly, turning around to leave. But his heart could not calm down for a long time.
Their survival options are already limited. Whether it's food or enemy resources, it's no longer a simple matter of supplies; it's a life-or-death struggle. In this struggle, everyone must make choices for their own survival, and these choices are often extremely cruel.
"Liu San." Just as Liu San was about to leave, Qin Cang's voice sounded again.
"Hmm?" Liu San turned around, his face still expressionless, but a sense of inexplicable uneasiness suddenly arose in his heart.
"Are you sure you can control yourself?" Qin Cang looked at him coldly, his eyes seemed to penetrate everything and see the deepest thoughts in Liu San's heart.
Liu San was stunned. A flame seemed to be burning in his heart. He knew that what Qin Cang meant was whether he could remain calm when facing the enemy, whether he could make decisions as decisively as Qin Cang did, without being swayed by emotions.
"I..." Liu San's voice was choked with sobs. He raised his head and met Qin Cang's gaze. At that moment, he seemed to see the weakness and struggle in his heart, and also saw the calmness and determination in Qin Cang's eyes.
"I will control it." He finally answered firmly, his tone full of determination.
Qin Cang said nothing more, only silently nodding. His gaze remained calm, as if it had never wavered. Yet, within Liu San's heart, a heavy force seemed to weigh on him. He wondered if every decision and action he would make would remain as calm and rational as Qin Cang wished.
However, he understood that this game was far beyond their control. Every step could be a matter of life and death.
"Let's go." Qin Cang suddenly whispered, turning and walking towards the woods outside the camp. "We must make a choice before dawn."
"What are you going to do?" Liu San spoke in a low voice, but with a hint of uncontrollable doubt.
Qin Cang didn't respond immediately. He continued to gaze at the seemingly quiet village in the distance, his brows slightly furrowed. After a moment, he slowly said, "I'm going to go take a look at the village."
"Go to the village?" Liu San was stunned for a moment, and suddenly felt uneasy. "Going now is too risky, isn't it?"
"Yes, it's a risk." Qin Cang turned around, his eyes deep, as if he could see through all the dangers and unknowns. "But we don't have time. Our food reserves are running low. If we delay any longer, we will be trapped here sooner or later."
Liu San fell silent. He knew in his heart that Qin Cang's judgments were never rash, and every decision was carefully considered. However, his intuition told him that going to the village might not be a wise choice. While the village was not far from their hiding place, it also meant they would have to cross an area teeming with potential enemies. If the enemy discovered their whereabouts, there would be no way out.
