Chapter 587 Feeling Uncomfortable
On this day, Qin Cang issued a crucial order: Liu San was responsible for securing the surrounding positions and preventing enemy surprise attacks. However, under Qin Cang's instructions, Liu San's execution was alarmingly poor. A task that should have taken only three hours actually took Liu San an entire day.
When Liu San returned to the camp, Qin Cang happened to be standing outside the tent, watching him approach from a distance. Liu San's steps were as steady as ever, but his eyes were no longer as sharp as before. Instead, they were a little cloudy, as if hiding something.
"Is the mission completed?" Qin Cang spoke calmly, with a barely perceptible sharpness in his eyes.
Liu San stopped and seemed a little hesitant, his eyes flickering: "It's done, sir." His tone was not as decisive as usual, but rather a bit procrastinating.
"Is it really finished?" Qin Cang did not relax immediately, but pressed further. Liu San's reaction made him feel vaguely uneasy. "Check it. Before submitting the report, I need to make sure you haven't missed any details."
Liu San's expression changed slightly. He quickly withdrew his hesitation and looked at Qin Cang with a firm gaze: "Everything has been taken care of. Nothing has been missed." He paused and added, "If you need, I can check again."
Qin Cang glanced at Liu San deeply. The flicker of hesitation in his eyes quickly triggered a sense of vigilance in him. Although Liu San's words were firm, Qin Cang knew he was not someone who would be easily fooled. He knew in his heart that Liu San had not completely carried out his orders.
"Are you sure?" Qin Cang asked again, his tone still calm, but the pressure in his eyes became more obvious.
Liu San frowned slightly, trying to remain calm: "I have confirmed it, there is no problem, sir."
But Qin Cang's eyes never left Liu San, and his suspicions grew stronger. He suddenly felt that Liu San was not incapable of completing the task, but was deliberately delaying it, or even deliberately not doing it perfectly in some details.
After a few seconds of silence, Qin Cang suddenly turned around and walked towards the small hut on the side of the camp. Without even glancing at Liu San, he walked straight in, picked up the map and report sheet, and began to check the defense line of the area Liu San was responsible for.
Liu San stood there, watching Qin Cang leave, a complex wave of emotions welling up within him. He knew Qin Cang didn't trust him, that he doubted him. This suspicion filled him with an inexplicable anger and grievance, yet he couldn't refute it. He knew full well that he had hesitated in carrying out orders, even intentionally procrastinating. Tasks that should have been completed sooner rather than later had been delayed by his own hesitation and uneasiness.
Liu San turned around and slowly walked towards his tent, his steps heavy. He began to unconsciously recall the past, especially the expectation and trust in Qin Cang's eyes when he assigned him the task. However, now, he seemed to have lost that trust.
"Why doesn't he trust me anymore?" Liu San asked himself. He couldn't answer the question, because he was beginning to doubt himself. He had been feeling incredibly trapped and overwhelmed during his recent missions. Whether on the battlefield or deep within himself, the inescapable burden only made him increasingly lost.
He unconsciously leaned against the tent wall, closed his eyes, and remained silent for a long time. He knew that Qin Cang's eyes were always so sharp, always able to see through the slightest hesitation in his heart. And he seemed to be increasingly unable to tolerate the feeling of being scrutinized.
"If I'm really procrastinating, then what exactly am I avoiding?" Liu San finally couldn't help but ask himself. He thought of the growing uneasiness and deep anxiety in his heart, which was like an invisible rope, tightly binding his chest and restricting his actions.
He looked up at the tent ceiling, and suddenly felt the urge to shout, to release all the pressure and worries, but he knew he couldn't do that. Qin Cang no longer trusted him, and he was already a hidden danger to the team. If he continued like this, sooner or later he would drag everyone down with him.
Meanwhile, Qin Cang stood at the other end of the camp, holding Liu San's mission report, his gaze growing increasingly serious. The report indicated that Liu San's defenses did indeed have some loopholes. While minor, they were enough to pose a potential threat in the event of an enemy attack.
He frowned, picked up a pen, and drew a few lines on the report, marking the places where Liu San had not fully implemented the instructions. At this moment, Qin Cang felt a deep sense of helplessness and disappointment. He had once regarded Liu San as his most capable assistant, but now, Liu San's behavior forced him to re-evaluate his ability and loyalty.
"I've always overestimated him," Qin Cang muttered to himself. Although he still hoped to find some trustworthy aspects of Liu San, the facts before him ruthlessly made him realize that Liu San had betrayed him when he needed him most.
The atmosphere in the camp grew increasingly gloomy. Qin Cang stood on a high ground, surveying his surroundings with a gaze as sharp as a knife. He memorized every detail. Moonlight shone across the earth, casting a silent silvery glow. A gentle breeze rustled the grass. The surrounding woods seemed to slumber in the night, and everything seemed eerily quiet.
Qin Cang knew this was the perfect time for an ambush. The enemy had been roaming around, and after observing them for a while, Qin Cang discovered that their patterns of movement were gradually revealing certain patterns. Although the enemy troops frequently shifted positions and adjusted their pace, their loopholes remained obvious. If they took advantage of this period, they could take advantage of it and strike a fatal blow.
However, this time, Qin Cang's mission wasn't easy. Liu San's actions made it difficult for him to focus fully on his plan. Every time he thought of Liu San's uneasy look, Qin Cang felt a wave of discomfort. He knew that Liu San wasn't just the key to the situation; perhaps, deeper factors lay beyond his control. Xiao Hu remained close by his side, but Qin Cang could sense a hint of hesitation in his expression.
"Xiao Hu." Qin Cang suddenly spoke, his voice low and filled with subtle pressure, "What do you think happened to Liu San recently?"
