Chapter 510 It’s too late
Xiao Hu followed behind him, always keeping his distance from Qin Cang. The two had already formed an unspoken understanding. For him, following Qin Cang was his only belief in every danger, and he also knew that Qin Cang would never let him down easily, even though at this time, they were still in an extremely dangerous situation.
"Don't worry." Xiaohu responded in a low voice, with a hint of nervousness and firm trust in his voice.
The two men moved silently through the bushes, going deeper and deeper. Qin Cang knew they were approaching the enemy's cache of weapons. With every step, he calculated the time and assessed the potential dangers. The enemy's cache of weapons would surely be heavily guarded; the slightest mistake would expose their target. But now, the food and fodder had been safely transferred, and the next goal was to destroy the enemy's weapons stockpile.
He couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Although these weapons were the enemy's lifeline, destroying them would give them a better chance of survival. But on a night like this, unexpected events could occur at any time.
"General, are you sure this is where the enemy hides their weapons?" Xiaohu's voice came again, with a hint of doubt.
"Sure," Qin Cang's tone remained steady. "If these weapons were in the hands of the enemy, they would be enough to change the situation, or even put us in a fatal predicament. But if they disappear, the enemy's strength will be greatly reduced."
Just as he finished speaking, footsteps echoed from the darkness ahead, followed by faint voices. Qin Cang paused for a moment, motioning for Xiao Hu to stop. His gaze instantly grew sharp, like a sharp blade piercing the darkness, staring intently at the movement ahead.
"There are enemies." Qin Cang said in a low voice.
Xiao Hu immediately leaned sideways, leaning his back against the tree trunk, his eyes fixed on the front, his heartbeat accelerating. Qin Cang's eyes scanned the surroundings, secretly calculating the enemy's distance. Although the footsteps were faint, he could tell from experience that the enemy wasn't just passing through, but was actually guarding this place.
"Xiao Hu, go around." Qin Cang instructed in a low voice.
"Yes, wait a moment." Xiaohu nodded slightly, then quickly left his original position and moved silently through the darkness like a cheetah. Qin Cang stood firmly in his place, quietly waiting for news from Xiaohu.
This brief minute felt incredibly long to Qin Cang. Every slight sound made him hold his breath nervously. If the enemy discovered their tracks, their operation would be a failure. And if they failed, the consequences wouldn't just be the capture of the two men; the entire battle plan they relied on would collapse.
"General, the enemy has moved away, we can continue to move forward." Xiaohu's voice sounded in Qin Cang's ears, with a hint of suppressed excitement.
Qin Cang nodded gently, signaling Xiao Hu to lead the way. The two quickly left their hiding place and approached the enemy's hidden weapons. Qin Cang was extremely cautious with every step, secretly calculating how to destroy the enemy's hidden weapons and avoid exposing their whereabouts.
They finally reached the entrance of a hidden cave. Thick trees and vines obscured the entrance, with no markings around it, seemingly disconnected from the outside world. Qin Cang stood before the entrance, observing quietly. He knew this was where the enemy had hidden their weapons. The air was thick with the smell of metal, as if it held a tremendous power.
"Xiao Hu, you go in first." Qin Cang pointed at the cave, his eyes filled with calm determination, "I'll provide cover outside."
Xiao Hu nodded and walked into the cave almost without hesitation. Qin Cang watched his back disappear into the darkness, but he remained vigilant. He knew that at such a critical moment, any slight mistake could lead to irreversible consequences.
The cave was completely silent, the air thick with the scent of earth and metal. Qin Cang stood quietly near the cave entrance, his heartbeat slowly returning to a steady state. He pressed his ear against the rock wall, trying to detect any movement from within. However, there was nothing around except the sound of the mountain wind.
Time ticked by, and Qin Cang's eyes grew increasingly alert. Xiao Hu had been inside the cave for some time, and there was still no response from him, which rekindled Qin Cang's uneasiness. If the enemy had discovered their tracks, they might have already sent guards around the cave. Now, the most important thing was to ensure Xiao Hu's safety.
Just as he was about to step into the cave, suddenly, a slight sound of footsteps broke the silence around him. Qin Cang stopped in his tracks, his heart skipping a beat. He quickly turned and hid in the shadows nearby, his eyes fixed on the cave entrance.
The footsteps were getting closer. Qin Cang's eyes were as sharp as a cheetah's. He could sense the enemy's approach. The air was filled with unease, and his heart was beating so fast that it almost jumped out of his chest. He held his breath, his body tense, as if ready to pounce on the enemy at any moment.
The footsteps gradually stopped, and then, there was a dead silence. Qin Cang secretly tightened his grip on the knife, feeling the coolness coming from the handle. He knew that the enemy had begun to be on guard and could discover his hiding place at any time.
"Xiao Hu, hurry up." Qin Cang urged silently in his heart, his heartbeat getting faster and faster. He knew that if he didn't eliminate the enemies now before they got close to the cave, it would be too late by the time Xiao Hu got his weapons.
Qin Cang's heart suddenly sank. He didn't react, only his eyes darting through the darkness, his nervous breath pressing like a knife's edge. He knew the situation had become extremely complicated, and any action could lead to uncontrollable consequences. The enemy didn't approach directly, but paused at the cave entrance, as if sensing something, or waiting for something.
Xiaohu's voice was still low and rapid, and Qin Cang could clearly hear the anxiety in it. However, this was not the time to sigh or reflect. He took a deep breath, made a decision in his heart, and without hesitation, lowered his voice and called softly, "Xiaohu, come here."
This order was brief and urgent. Qin Cang knew that if they delayed any longer, they might not even have a chance to retreat. Right now, they had to take control of the situation while the enemy was still not fully alert to avoid further trouble.
The silence in the cave lasted for a few seconds, and then Xiaohu's figure quietly appeared in the shadows at the cave entrance. His steps were extremely light, but Qin Cang could still sense the sense of urgency from his slightly tense body. Xiaohu lowered his head and glanced at Qin Cang with a complicated expression. It was obvious that he had realized that something was wrong.
