Chapter 29 Temporary Escape
Gu Yunzhou no longer hesitated and carefully moved the wooden board away. Sure enough, a hole that was only wide enough for one person to pass through was revealed underneath. The hole was filled with a rotten smell and was so dark that it was impossible to see what was hidden inside.
"Mom, let's go down!" Gu Yunzhou said softly, reaching out to feel around the cave entrance and quickly finding a ladder he had prepared. He held onto Qin tightly and helped her slowly climb down the ladder, then followed her into the cave.
Shortly after they left, several ragged beggars suddenly appeared in the yard. They moved swiftly and without making a sound. They expertly replaced the wooden planks, covered the marks with mud, and repositioned the water jars, as if nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, Gu Yunzhou and Qin had already successfully reached the outskirts of the city by following the mysterious tunnel. The mansion was located on the edge of the city, and the tunnel's exit led directly to a small hill outside. Far from the official roads, it was rarely visited, and since it was barely dawn, Gu Yunzhou and Qin didn't encounter anyone else when they emerged from the hidden entrance.
"Brother Yun, how did you know there was such a secret passage?"
Qin brushed the dirt off her body and looked at her son in surprise. She really didn't expect that her son had such great ability. Since her accident yesterday, the child has been calm and arranged everything in an orderly manner, as if he had grown up a lot in an instant.
"Mom, I'm just lucky," Gu Yunzhou explained with a smile. "I saved a beggar before, and he told me about it. I didn't expect it to be such a big help to us this time. I've also heard from some elders that some wealthy families would dig secret passages in their homes for emergencies. I didn't expect it to be true!"
He hadn't taken it seriously before and just listened to it. When he arrived near the city gate just now, he suddenly remembered this incident, so he came here with the idea of giving it a try. He didn't expect that there really was a secret passage.
"It is true that good deeds are rewarded and evil deeds are punished! You saved the beggar's life, and that is why you have the blessing you have today!" Qin touched her son's head with relief, "It is all thanks to you this time, otherwise, I am afraid that both mother and son would die here." As she said this, she could not help shedding tears.
"Mom, don't cry. Isn't everything okay now?" Gu Yunzhou comforted her quickly. "Besides, we have to hurry on our way. We can't stay in Liuyun Town for the time being." He took his mother's hand and walked away.
Along the way, Gu Yunzhou remained vigilant and kept an eye on the surroundings. He knew that although they had escaped danger for the time being, no one knew whether Gu Tianhua had discovered anything, so they had to leave this place as soon as possible and find a safe place to hide.
After some effort, they finally arrived at a mountain forest. The terrain here was complex and the trees were dense, making it a perfect place to hide. Gu Yunzhou found a cave, settled his mother, and began to prepare food and water. He knew that in this situation, survival was the most important thing.
"Brother Yun, what should we do next?" Qin asked worriedly, "Who were those people yesterday? Will they follow us?"
Gu Yunzhou looked at his worried mother and comforted her, "Don't worry, Mom. I have a plan." He pondered for a moment and finally decided to tell his mother the truth. "Those people yesterday were from the Gu family, so we can't show up in Liuyun Town for the time being."
Upon hearing the news, Qin's face turned pale instantly. She held Gu Yunzhou's hand tightly and asked in a trembling voice: "Gu family, why do they want to harm us mother and son?" She really couldn't understand why a big family like the Gu family would attack them, an ordinary mother and son.
Gu Yunzhou sighed helplessly and explained, "Mom, do you remember what happened yesterday? Maybe they're afraid we'll come to them and demand justice, so they want to get rid of us." He paused and continued, "But luckily we still have some savings, and we have all the banknotes with us, so we don't have to worry about food and drink. But now we need to find a safe place to hide for a while until the storm has died down."
Qin gritted her teeth, a trace of anger flashed in her eyes, "The Gu family is really too much! We are obviously the victims, but we still have to suffer their persecution!" She clenched her fists, her heart filled with unwillingness and resentment.
"I guess there is no reason for them. Maybe they simply don't like us, or maybe they have some other purpose. But we can't stay here for the time being. If we want to leave, we might as well go farther away. Mom, let's go directly to the county town!" Gu Yunzhou didn't dwell on it for too long. No matter what the Gu family's purpose was, they had people set fire to them and wanted to burn them to death. This was already an irreconcilable feud.
Gu Yunzhou then whispered comfortingly, "Don't worry, Mom. One day we'll make the Gu family pay the price. But right now, we must ensure our own safety first." He took out a piece of dry food and a pot of water from his bag and handed them to his mother. "Mom, eat something and drink some water, then get a good rest. Once we've recovered our strength, we'll have to continue on our journey."
The mother and son set their sights on the right direction, tossing and turning all the way, and after three days of arduous journey, they finally arrived at Jinzhou County City. Fortunately, they had enough money, so they bought a carriage along the way, which allowed them to rush all the way to their destination.
They were all ordinary people without literary energy in their bodies, and could not use literary energy to travel. You should know that Wei Qing and Doctor Liu also came from Jinzhou County City, but it only took them one day.
After arriving, they did not choose to stay in an inn, but instead rented a small courtyard. This courtyard was located far away from the city center, and the street was relatively quiet.
Meanwhile, at the Gu family's home, when Lai Fu reported to Gu Tianhua that Gu Yunzhou's courtyard had been destroyed by fire, Gu Tianhua's face immediately broke into a smug smile. However, before his smile deepened, he noticed that Lai Fu's expression seemed hesitant, as if he was hesitant to speak.
He was displeased and scolded without any courtesy, "Is there anything else you want to tell me? You only tell me half of the story. Are you trying to play with me like a monkey?"
Lai Fu knelt skillfully and begged for mercy. He carefully assessed Gu Tianhua's expression. Seeing that he showed no signs of further anger, he resumed his story, recounting the events of the previous night in fragments. "Yesterday, I went with Chunmu to Gu Yunzhou's house to set the fire. To be safe, we even added kerosene to ensure a strong fire."
Gu Tianhua sat in the chair, his lips slightly raised, a look of satisfaction flashing across his face. He crossed his legs and gently kicked Lai Fu's shoulder, who was kneeling on the ground, with his toes, signaling him to continue.
