Chapter 17 Chinese Studies Class
After the poetry gathering concluded, everyone dispersed, returning to their normal lives. Tang Wenshu was no exception. She turned and stepped through the all-too-familiar gate of the Duke's Mansion, continuing her ordinary yet fraught life day after day.
In this mansion, Tang Tian, Tang Jing, and the others were like a group of mischievous elves, constantly pulling off unexpected and hilarious little tricks. However, Tang Wenshu, possessing a mature mind tempered by twenty-three years in his previous life, handled these petty tricks with ease.
With frantic skill, she time and again deftly discerned and neutralized the endless stream of subtle maneuvers. Furthermore, this incredibly resourceful young woman often took the initiative, challenging her opponents and deliberately teasing them. These back-and-forth battles gradually became a unique source of enjoyment for Tang Wenshu throughout her school years, establishing her as a demonic presence within the first elementary class.
Time flies, and in the blink of an eye, it is a special day of this month - the Chinese studies class held every month in the girls' school has arrived as scheduled.
Although the Duke's Mansion always placed great emphasis on cultivating the moral character and talents of its women, they had not actually devoted much effort to the study of timeless classics like the Four Books and the Five Classics. In their view, such obscure and profound knowledge existed only for the purpose of preparing for the imperial examinations, and had no relevance to the mundane affairs of ordinary people's daily lives.
Fortunately, thanks to the unremitting efforts of Mr. Xiu, who has always advocated traditional cultural education, this course is able to retain such a rare and precious teaching opportunity every month.
When Tang Wenshu stepped into the classroom, she felt like she had entered a whole new world. Her gaze was instantly drawn to the portrait hanging above the podium. The figure in the painting, clad in a flowing gown, stood tall and straight like a pine tree. A transcendental aura emanated from her expression, like an immortal descending to earth, captivating her.
"This is the great sage Confucius!" Tang Wenshu's heart surged, and an indescribable admiration welled up from deep within her heart. She gazed at the portrait, as if she could feel Confucius' profound knowledge and noble character being transmitted through the picture.
At this moment, Mr. Xiu came forward with a solemn expression and said in a loud voice: "Students, please follow me to pay respect to the portrait of Confucius." As soon as he finished speaking, all the students stood up in unison, faced the portrait, and bowed respectfully.
Everyone followed Mr. Xiu and chanted in unison: "Establish a mind for heaven and earth. Establish a mission for the people. Carry forward the lost knowledge of the ancient sages. Create peace for all generations." After each sentence, they kowtowed devoutly to express their respect and remembrance for this great thinker.
"The essence of Chinese classics lies in recitation. You must remember these key points." Mr. Xiu stood upright, as tall and straight as a pine tree. His voice was soft and melodious, yet it seemed to possess a magical power that easily penetrated the eardrums, entered the depths of the mind, and etched itself deeply into the heart. At this moment, Tang Wenshu felt an unprecedented sense of awe. He felt that this Chinese studies class before him was far more solemn and sacred than any other.
Mr. Xiu continued, "First, you must maintain an upright posture, allowing your breath to sink to your dantian, allowing your entire body to completely relax. Second, you must continuously send your energy upward to your throat, ensuring your voice is round, full, and clear. Third, when reciting, you must eliminate any personal emotions and accurately grasp the rhythm and cadence."
Then, today's lesson officially began—"Land Benevolence is Beautiful." Everyone began by reciting in unison: "The Master said, 'Land Benevolence is beautiful, but if one does not choose to live in it, how can one know it?' The Master said, 'The unkind cannot abide in a contract for long, nor can they enjoy happiness for long. The benevolent find peace in benevolence, and the wise benefit from it.' The Master said, 'The benevolent can love people as well as hate people.' The Master said, 'If one is determined to be benevolent, there is no evil.'"
Ms. Xiu actually spent an entire hour explaining the phrase, "To be surrounded by benevolence is beauty; if one chooses not to benevolent, how can one know it?" She cited classic texts and explained in a simple and accessible way, "Everyone should aspire to pursue the beauty of benevolence within. Those at lower levels of dimension choose to associate with benevolent people and regard this as beauty. Those at higher levels, on the other hand, naturally display beautiful qualities without having to deliberately choose to live in a benevolent environment. As for those who have reached the highest realm of perfection, they embody beauty by caring for the people and spreading benevolence."
After a careful self-examination, Tang Wenshu realized with astonishment that she couldn't even be classified as a lower-dimensional being. Despite her soul's experience traveling through time and space, achieving the state of repaying evil with kindness was a feat she found daunting. In fact, she preferred to simply go berserk, retaliating with an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. While this class had taught Tang Wenshu many lessons, it also intensified her resolve to remain true to herself. As for the master's grand goals of investigating things, seeking knowledge, sincerity, rectifying the mind, cultivating oneself, regulating the family, governing the state, and pacifying the world, she felt that even the cultivation of one's character before successfully completing them was a significant undertaking.
Once upon a time, Tang Wenshu held a firm belief: people should never be judged solely by appearance, as appearance is merely a superficial layer of skin and cannot represent a person's true essence and inner qualities. In her eyes, only those with a heart filled with kindness and integrity could be truly beautiful. However, today, she deeply realizes that her past view was completely wrong!
As the saying goes, "Appearance reflects the heart," this saying truly holds immense meaning! Those with naturally beautiful and exceptional appearances often possess hearts more beautiful and pure than those of ordinary people. Conversely, if someone's face appears hideous or unsightly, then nine out of ten times, they harbor evil intentions and are sinister and malicious.
Thinking of this, Tang Wenshu couldn't help but begin to recall the various people he had met in his past and present lives. Among these many faces, the most bright and graceful one was undoubtedly the man named Chu Rui.
His face, as if meticulously carved by heaven, was practically flawless, radiating a captivating charm like a peerless work of art, and like a vivid, exquisitely crafted doll, captivating and captivating. Whenever Tang Wenshu saw Chu Rui's stunning face, he couldn't help but sigh at the Creator's favor for him, and secretly congratulated himself on having the good fortune to meet such an extraordinary and handsome man.
