Chapter 14: Under the Shadow
Zhang Wanqing clutched her notebook tightly as she followed Fu Siyuan through the bustling crowd. Today was her first time going out with him for an interview. Their destination was a chemical plant in the city center, where a serious chemical leak had occurred. The sky was gloomy and overcast, as if foreshadowing the challenges to come.
When they arrived at the scene, police had already set up a cordon, and the lights of fire trucks and ambulances flashed under the gray sky. Zhang Wanqing's heartbeat quickened; she had never witnessed such a tense scene. Fu Siyuan, however, appeared remarkably calm, his eyes sharp as he quickly assessed the situation.
"We have to find the person in charge and learn the details of the accident." Fu Siyuan said to Zhang Wanqing in a firm and powerful voice.
Zhang Wanqing nodded, her eyes searching the crowd for a possible interview subject. However, the scene was in chaos, and people were emotionally agitated, making it almost impossible to approach the person in charge of the chemical plant.
"We can try approaching from the side," Zhang Wanqing suggested, her eyes gleaming with determination. "I noticed there's an alley over there. Maybe we can get around the cordon."
Fu Siyuan frowned. He didn't agree with this risky plan. "It's too dangerous. We can't disobey the police's orders." His voice was filled with unquestionable authority.
Zhang Wanqing bit her lip. She knew Fu Siyuan's concerns were justified, but her intuition told her that the alley might be their only way to get to the truth. "We're just going to observe, we won't act rashly," she insisted.
Fu Siyuan was silent for a while, his eyes wandering between Zhang Wanqing's determined face and the chaotic scene. Finally, he sighed. "Okay, but we have to be very careful."
They carefully made their way through the crowd and arrived at the alley Zhang Wanqing had discovered. The alley was narrow and dark, with graffiti covering the walls on both sides. Their footsteps echoed in the alley, and each step seemed particularly heavy.
After walking for about five minutes, they reached the end of the alley, where there was a half-open iron gate. Through the crack in the gate, they could see a corner of the chemical plant where several workers in protective suits were busy working.
Zhang Wanqing was about to push the door open when Fu Siyuan suddenly stopped her. "Wait..." He pulled a small camera out of his pocket and handed it to Zhang Wanqing. "You take the picture here, I'll go get their attention."
Zhang Wanqing was stunned. She hadn't expected Fu Siyuan to come up with such a plan. "This is too dangerous!" She said with worry in her voice.
Fu Siyuan smiled slightly, his eyes flashing with determination. "Trust me, I have experience." His voice was low and powerful.
Zhang Wanqing hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded. She knew this was the best plan at the moment. Fu Siyuan took a deep breath, then strode to the main gate of the chemical plant and began to negotiate with the police.
Zhang Wanqing hid behind the iron gate, her heart pounding. She looked at Fu Siyuan's back, her heart filled with respect. She quickly adjusted her camera's settings and peered through the crack in the door, capturing the action inside the chemical plant.
At this moment, she noticed a man in work clothes sneaking out of a side door, holding something in his hand. Zhang Wanqing's intuition told her that this man might be the key clue.
She immediately pressed the shutter and captured the scene. At this moment, there was a commotion at Fu Siyuan's side, and the police began to approach him. Zhang Wanqing's heart was in her throat, she knew they didn't have much time.
Fu Siyuan cleverly avoided the police and ran towards Zhang Wanqing. He grabbed her and ran away without looking back. They quickly left the scene and returned to the newspaper office.
Back at the newspaper office, Zhang Wanqing looked at the photos she had taken on her computer, while Fu Siyuan sorted out the information he had received from the police.
"This person may be an insider of the chemical plant, and what he has in his hand may be the key evidence." Zhang Wanqing pointed to a man in a photo and said excitedly to Fu Siyuan.
Fu Siyuan nodded, his eyes gleaming with approval. "You did a great job, Wanqing." There was a subtle hint of pride in his voice.
Their report eventually exposed the safety hazards and management negligence of the chemical plant, attracting widespread public attention. Zhang Wanqing was feeling happy when Fu Siyuan interrupted her thoughts.
"Wanqing, do you think this report is over?"
"Hmm." Zhang Wanqing looked at Fu Siyuan's thoughtful face and seemed to realize that this matter was not as simple as it seemed. So she continued to ask, "Could it be... that there is something hidden behind this matter?"
"Yes, everything is not as simple as it seems. As journalists, we must see through the surface to the essence and dig out the truth hidden behind the surface. Even if a certain matter, after our in-depth investigation, does not reveal the so-called hidden truth, we cannot easily give up every opportunity to investigate."
Zhang Wanqing nodded. Although the reports of the chemical plant accident had attracted widespread public attention, she knew that this was only the beginning. They would face further tests, and perhaps they were still far from the truth.
Zhang Wanqing sat at her workstation, twirling a pen in her hand, her eyes fixed on the blank document on the computer screen. She wanted to write, but didn't know how.
At that moment, Fu Siyuan appeared at the newspaper office, a serious look in his eyes. "Wanqing, I've got some leads. A former employee of the chemical plant is willing to meet with us and tell us what he knows." His voice was low, with unquestionable determination.
Zhang Wanqing's heartbeat quickened. She knew this could be a major breakthrough. "When?" she asked quickly.
"Now." Fu Siyuan answered concisely. His gaze lingered on Zhang Wanqing's face for a moment, as if assessing her preparation.
She nodded, quickly packed her bag, and followed Fu Siyuan out of the newspaper office. The sky outside was still gloomy and drizzling, as if foreshadowing that the upcoming investigation would not go so smoothly.
They arrived in front of a dilapidated apartment building. Rainwater flowed down the mottled walls, giving people a depressing feeling. Fu Siyuan knocked on a door on the third floor. The door slowly opened, revealing the tired face of a middle-aged man.
"Please come in." The man's voice was hoarse, and his eyes were full of vigilance and uneasiness.
Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan walked into the small apartment, which was filled with a damp and stale smell. The man gestured for them to sit on a worn sofa, while he sat on the chair opposite.
