Love and choices across time and space
Chapter 31 Su Yao, You Shouldn't Waste Your Time on Me
Li Yifeng's consciousness slowly awoke from the chaos, as if he had experienced a long and deep sleep. His thoughts were initially a tangled mess, but gradually, fragments of his memories began to piece themselves together.
He remembered his poignant yet hopeless love with Princess Changle in the Tang Dynasty, and how they ultimately could not escape the fate that had played such a trick on their lives. But now, when he struggled to open his eyes, he found himself in a completely unfamiliar environment.
It was a small, shabby room, the air thick with a faint musty smell. The plaster had peeled off the mottled walls, revealing the yellowed bricks beneath. A single bed sat against the wall, its mattress slightly dented, its bedding scattered on top. Li Yifeng sat up, feeling dizzy. He pressed his hand to his forehead, trying to clear his head.
He looked down at himself. He was wearing a faded gray shirt with frayed cuffs and a missing button. He wore baggy black trousers with frayed hems. He wore a pair of worn slippers with stains all over the top.
Li Yifeng slowly stood up, his steps somewhat unsteady, and walked to the only window in the room. The glass was covered with a thick layer of dust. Through the blurred glass, he saw a narrow street outside, with cars and pedestrians hurriedly passing by.
He tried hard to recall what had happened, and memories came flooding back. He realized that his soul had traveled through time for thousands of years, returned to the present day, and possessed the body of an elderly bachelor named Zhang Qiang.
"This..." Li Yifeng muttered to himself, his voice full of confusion and disbelief.
He walked to the shabby wardrobe beside the bed and opened the door. Inside were several old-fashioned clothes. He casually took out a coat and put it on, ready to go out, wanting to learn more about this strange world.
As he walked out of the creaking door and into the hallway, a stale smell hit him. The hallway was dimly lit, and the walls were covered with various small advertisements. Li Yifeng walked down the stairs carefully, the stairs creaking with every step.
When he got downstairs, the sunlight was a bit glaring. He squinted, adjusting to the bright light. Rows of old residential buildings lined the streets, their walls covered in green vines. Street vendors hawked their wares, selling all sorts of daily necessities.
Li Yifeng walked aimlessly, his eyes filled with curiosity and confusion. Passing by a barber shop, he saw his disheveled hair and haggard face reflected in the window. He couldn't help but laugh bitterly, thinking how miserable he looked in this day and age.
The pedestrians on the road were in a hurry, and no one noticed the lonely man. Li Yifeng saw a little girl crying on the side of the road, her mother beside her anxiously comforting her. He felt a little sympathy in his heart, but he didn't know what to do.
Before he knew it, Li Yifeng arrived at a park. The park was shaded by green trees, and the lake rippled in the breeze. He sat down on a bench by the lake and stared at the water in a daze.
At this moment, an old man walked past him with a puppy. The old man glanced at him, seemed to sense something was wrong with him, shook his head slightly, and continued walking forward.
Li Yifeng's mind raced, his heart aching as he recalled his time in the Tang Dynasty. Princess Changle's beautiful face appeared before his eyes, her smile as warm as the spring sunshine. But now, everything had become a thing of the past.
"Princess, I still failed to protect our love." Li Yifeng said to himself, his eyes slightly red.
A breeze blew by, bringing a slight chill, and Li Yifeng couldn't help shivering. He stood up and continued walking in the park.
As he walked, he saw a group of young people laughing and playing on the lawn. Their laughter was so carefree that Li Yifeng felt a little envious.
"If I can start over in this era, perhaps it is also a kind of arrangement of fate." Li Yifeng thought secretly, and a hint of determination gradually revealed in his eyes.
At noon, Li Yifeng's stomach began to growl. He walked out of the park and went to a snack bar. There were not many customers in the shop, and the owner greeted him warmly.
"Young man, what would you like to eat?" the boss asked with a smile.
Li Yifeng looked at the menu and ordered a bowl of ramen. A moment later, the steaming hot ramen arrived. Li Yifeng picked up his chopsticks and began to eat. Although the taste couldn't compare to the delicacies of the Tang Dynasty, he felt incredibly satisfied.
After finishing his noodles, Li Yifeng paid and left the snack bar. He continued walking along the street and passed by a bookstore, so he walked in involuntarily.
The bookstore was filled with the faint aroma of books. Li Yifeng walked between the shelves, his fingers lightly running over the books. He came across a history book and couldn't help but pick it up to read. The book mentioned the glory of the Tang Dynasty, and Li Yifeng's heart was moved.
"We can't go back to that period of history after all." Li Yifeng sighed and put the book back on the bookshelf.
It was already afternoon when Li Yifeng came out of the bookstore. He remembered that he still had to find out about Zhang Qiang's work situation, so he walked back.
Back at the rental house, Li Yifeng found Zhang Qiang's work ID and some documents in the drawer. It turned out that Zhang Qiang was doing an ordinary clerical job in a small company.
The next day, Li Yifeng got up early, put on neat clothes, and went to the company.
The company was located in an old office building, and the elevator was packed with people. Li Yifeng squeezed into the elevator with the crowd, feeling a little uneasy.
Arriving at the floor where the company was located, Li Yifeng took a deep breath and walked into the office.
"Zhang Qiang, why didn't you come to work yesterday?" A sharp voice sounded. Li Yifeng looked up and saw a middle-aged woman looking at him with dissatisfaction.
Li Yifeng quickly apologized: "I'm sorry, Manager Wang, I was not feeling well yesterday."
Manager Wang snorted coldly, "Not feeling well? That's a terrible excuse. You're missing this month's performance bonus!"
Li Yifeng's heart sank, but he could only nod in agreement.
He walked to his workstation and sat down. His colleagues all looked at him strangely. Li Yifeng smiled awkwardly and started working.
However, he was not familiar with the business of this job, and looking at the documents on the computer screen, he felt a headache.
"Zhang Qiang, this document has to be handed over to the client this afternoon, so hurry up!" Manager Wang urged again.
Li Yifeng gritted his teeth and tried to concentrate on processing the documents. But the more anxious he was, the more likely he was to make mistakes.
At lunchtime, Li Yifeng was sitting alone in the company's lounge area, quietly eating his lunch box when a young colleague came over.
"Zhang Qiang, don't take Manager Wang's words too seriously. She's just like that." He said at the same time.
Li Yifeng looked at him gratefully and said, "Thank you. I will try my best to do it well."
My colleague smiled and said, "If you have any questions, you can ask me."
Li Yifeng nodded, feeling a little warm in his heart.
In the afternoon, Li Yifeng finally completed the document, but when he handed it to Manager Wang, many problems were still found.
"What are you doing? Do it again!" Manager Wang threw the documents on the table and said loudly.
Li Yifeng reluctantly picked up the document and returned to his workstation to revise it. He worked overtime until late at night before he finally finished the work.
Dragging his tired body back to the rental house, Li Yifeng lay on the bed, feeling like he was about to collapse.
"This job is too difficult." Li Yifeng said to himself.
Just as he was lost in thought, his cell phone suddenly rang. Li Yifeng picked up the phone and saw that it was an unfamiliar number.
"Hello?" Li Yifeng answered the phone.
"Is this Zhang Qiang? I'm the landlord. It's time to pay this month's rent!" The landlord's impatient voice came from the other end of the phone.
Li Yifeng suddenly felt a headache: "Landlord, can you give me a few more days? I'm a little short of money recently."
"No! Tomorrow at the latest, otherwise you have to move out!" The landlord said and hung up the phone.
Li Yifeng put down his phone helplessly, his heart filled with anxiety.
Over the next few days, Li Yifeng worked hard every day. Although he still made mistakes, he gradually adapted to the work rhythm. However, the pressure of life made him breathless.
One night, Li Yifeng was on his way home when it suddenly started to rain heavily. He didn't have an umbrella with him, so he had to take shelter under the eaves of a roadside house. The rain soaked his clothes, making him feel cold.
Just then, a car stopped in front of him. The window rolled down, revealing a beautiful face.
"Get in the car, I'll give you a ride." said the woman.
Li Yifeng was a little surprised, but still got in the car.
"Thank you." Li Yifeng said.
The woman smiled and said, "You're welcome. It's raining so hard, you'll get sick if you stay out there alone."
In the car, Li Yifeng learned that the woman's name was Su Yao and she was an executive of a company.
"You look tired. Is it hard work?" Su Yao asked.
Li Yifeng smiled bitterly and nodded: "Yes, life is not easy."
Su Yao comforted her, "Don't be too discouraged. As long as you work hard, things will get better."
The car stopped downstairs of Li Yifeng's rental house.
"Thank you again." Li Yifeng said.
"You're welcome. See you again." Su Yao said and drove away.
Li Yifeng looked at the car going away, his heart filled with gratitude towards Su Yao.
Since then, Li Yifeng often thinks of Su Yao. He knows that there is a huge gap between him and her, but Su Yao's kindness and gentleness make him unforgettable.
At an industry exchange meeting, Li Yifeng unexpectedly met Su Yao again.
"What a coincidence." Li Yifeng said nervously.
Su Yao smiled and nodded: "yes, I didn't expect to see you here."
The two chatted, and Li Yifeng found that Su Yao was not only smart and capable, but also had unique insights into many issues.
"Do you have any plans for the future?" Su Yao asked suddenly.
Li Yifeng was stunned for a moment, then said: "I want to work hard and improve my life."
Su Yao looked at him with a glint of appreciation in her eyes: "it's a good thing to have a goal, come on."
After the exchange meeting, Li Yifeng plucked up the courage to ask Su Yao for her contact information.
After returning home, Li Yifeng hesitated for a long time and sent a text message to Su Yao, thanking her for her communication and encouragement at the exchange meeting.
Su Yao quickly replied to him, and the two began to communicate frequently through text messages.
As he got to know her better, Li Yifeng found that he liked Su Yao more and more. But he always had concerns in his heart, fearing that he was not worthy of her.
One day, Su Yao asked Li Yifeng to meet her.
In a cozy cafe, Li Yifeng met Su Yao.
"Li Yifeng, I know what you have been hesitating about, but I don't care about those external conditions. What I see is your hard work and sincerity." Su Yao said seriously.
Li Yifeng was deeply moved: "Su Yao, I'm really afraid of disappointing your expectations."
Su Yao held his hand: "as long as you are determined, everything is not a problem."
With Su Yao's encouragement, Li Yifeng worked harder and his performance gradually improved.
However, just when he thought his life was getting better, his body started to have problems.
He often felt dizzy and weak, sometimes even experiencing blackouts. Initially, he thought it was just work fatigue and ignored it. But the symptoms grew worse, forcing him to seek medical attention.
When Li Yifeng received the medical report, he was struck by lightning. The doctor told him that he had a serious health problem and needed to be hospitalized.
Li Yifeng was afraid of losing Su Yao and did not dare to tell her the truth. He began to deliberately reduce his contact with Su Yao and tried to alienate her.
But Su Yao still noticed his abnormality.
"Li Yifeng, what happened? Why are you so cold to me suddenly?" Su Yao asked anxiously.
Li Yifeng hesitated: "Nothing, just too busy with work."
Su Yao doesn't believe it: "don't lie to me, I can feel that you are hiding something from me."
In desperation, Li Yifeng had to tell the truth.
After listening to this, Su Yao's tears welled up in her eyes: "Why didn't you tell me earlier? I would always be with you."
Accompanied by Su Yao, Li Yifeng was admitted to the hospital. Every day, Su Yao would visit him and bring him warmth and encouragement.
In the ward, Li Yifeng looked at Su Yao busying herself for him, his heart filled with guilt and emotion.
"Su Yao, you shouldn't waste your time on me." Li Yifeng said.
Su Yao glared at him: "what nonsense are you talking about? Just take good care of yourself and don't think about anything else."
After a period of treatment, Li Yifeng's condition gradually improved. On the day he was discharged from the hospital, Su Yao came to pick him up.
"Don't hide it from me anymore." Su Yao said.
Li Yifeng nodded: "No, thank you."
After returning to work, Li Yifeng cherished everything he had worked so hard for. He worked hard and, with his efforts and talents, was recognized by his superiors and promoted.
With the success of his career, Li Yifeng finally had enough courage to propose to Su Yao.
On a starry night, Li Yifeng carefully arranged a romantic scene. When Su Yao arrived, she was stunned by everything in front of her.
Li Yifeng held flowers in his hand, knelt on one knee, and took out the ring: "Su Yao, will you marry me? Let me take care of you for the rest of my life."
Su Yao burst into tears and nodded: "I do."
They held a grand and warm wedding, and relatives and friends all gave them their blessings.
Their married life was peaceful and happy. They did housework together, watched movies together, and shared the joys and sorrows of life together.
One day, Li Yifeng came home from get off work and saw Su Yao busy in the kitchen.
"Honey, I'm back." Li Yifeng said.
Su Yao turned back with a smile: "Go wash your hands and get ready to eat."
At the dinner table, Li Yifeng looked at Su Yao, his heart filled with happiness and satisfaction.
"Thank you for giving me such a wonderful life." Li Yifeng said.
Su Yao held his hand: "we created all this together."
As time went by, their relationship grew stronger and stronger. Although they would occasionally have small quarrels, they would always make up quickly.
