Love and choices across time and space
Chapter 20 Princess, there is no time left. As long as you are safe, Xiao Cui will die without regre
The setting sun shone like blood, weeping and mourning across the barren land, casting a veil of tragic and poignant beauty over the bleak wilderness. The howling wind whirled dust and sand, mercilessly lashing the exhausted bodies of Li Yifeng and Princess Changle.
Princess Changle, once the most cherished and beloved woman in the imperial palace, now fell into the desolate state of a street beggar. Her silky, soft hair, long since lost its luster, fluttered in the wind, strands clinging to her pale, snow-white face with sweat. Her eyes, once as bright as stars, were now clouded by fear and despair. Tears welled in her swollen, reddened eyes, but they stubbornly refused to fall. Her magnificent palace dress had long since become tattered from the journey, the hem ripped by thorns, the once delicate embroidery stained with dust and blood, leaving it looking mottled and desolate.
Li Yifeng was not much better off. His clothes were ragged and patched, with several large gashes at the corners from branches, revealing the scarred skin beneath. His face was thin and gaunt, with prominent cheekbones and stubble covering his chin. His eyes were deeply sunken, yet they still shone with a firm and unyielding light. His once broad and powerful shoulders were now slightly hunched from excessive fatigue, but his hand remained tightly clasped around Princess Changle's, as if it were his only support in the world.
"Princess, we have to hurry! The pursuers are coming." Li Yifeng's voice was hoarse and rapid, filled with deep anxiety and uneasiness. As he spoke, he looked back warily, his eyes full of vigilance.
Princess Changle raised her head slightly and looked at Li Yifeng, her eyes filled with helplessness and dependence. "Yifeng, I really can't walk anymore. My feet..." Her voice trembled, almost crying. She struggled to lift her foot, only to see that her once delicate embroidered shoes were now tattered. The soles of her feet were covered with blisters and scars. Every step felt like dancing on the edge of a knife.
Li Yifeng looked at Princess Changle with heartache, his heart filled with self-blame and guilt. "Princess, it's all my fault for making you suffer like this." He gritted his teeth and squatted down. "Princess, come up. I'll carry you."
Princess Changle hesitated for a moment, but finally leaned on Li Yifeng's back, which was not broad but extremely solid. Li Yifeng took a deep breath, stood up, and continued to move forward with heavy but firm steps.
At this moment, a burst of rapid horse hooves and shouts came from behind them, like a death spell, making their hearts sink to the bottom in an instant.
"Oh no, Princess, they are catching up!" Li Yifeng's expression became more serious, and beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.
Princess Changle hugged Li Yifeng's neck tightly, her body trembling. "Yifeng, what should we do? What should we do?"
At this critical moment, Xiao Cui, the maid who had always been with Princess Changle, suddenly rushed out. Her face was full of determination and firmness, and her eyes were shining with fearlessness.
"Princess, Mr. Li, please leave quickly. I will lead them away!" Xiao Cui shouted.
"Xiao Cui, no!" Princess Changle exclaimed.
"Princess, there's no time left. As long as you're safe, Xiao Cui will die without regrets!" Xiao Cui said, then turned and ran in another direction, shouting, "Princess, I'm here! Come and catch me!"
When the pursuers heard Xiao Cui's cry, they were attracted and chased in her direction.
Li Yifeng watched Xiao Cui's receding figure, his eyes welling with tears. "Xiao Cui, take care!" He quickened his pace, carrying Princess Changle on his back, and disappeared into the vast wilderness.
Night fell quietly, and the inky darkness swallowed everything. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle hid in a dark, damp cave. The cave was filled with a pungent, musty smell, and the sound of water dripping from the walls seemed like a countdown to fate.
Princess Changle collapsed on the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably. Her eyes were hollow, tears streaming silently. "Xiao Cui did this for me... I've ruined her..." Her voice choked with sobs, filled with self-blame and pain.
Li Yifeng walked over to Princess Changle, knelt down, and gently wiped the tears from her face. "Princess, this isn't your fault. Xiao Cui volunteered, and her loyalty will be blessed by Heaven." His voice was gentle yet firm, trying to comfort Princess Changle.
Princess Changle raised her head and looked at Li Yifeng, her eyes filled with despair and confusion. "Yifeng, can we still escape? Do we still have a future?"
Li Yifeng held Princess Changle's hand and looked at her firmly. "Princess, as long as we don't give up, there is hope." His voice echoed in the cave with an undeniable power.
Princess Changle leaned in Li Yifeng's arms and nodded slightly. "Yifeng, I believe you."
Outside the cave, the wind was still howling, and the branches were swaying wildly in the wind, as if the devil was baring its fangs and claws. In this dark cave, Li Yifeng and Princess Changle snuggled together, searching for a glimmer of warmth and hope amidst fear and despair.
A few days later, the morning sun shone through the leaves, illuminating Li Yifeng and Princess Changle. They emerged from the cave and continued their escape. Princess Changle's feet were still aching, but she gritted her teeth and tried to keep up with Li Yifeng.
They walked through a dense forest filled with mist. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating golden beams of light. Li Yifeng carefully protected Princess Changle, avoiding thorny branches and traps hidden in the grass.
"Princess, be careful where you step." Li Yifeng's voice was low and gentle.
Princess Changle nodded slightly, a strong smile on her face. "Yifeng, I'm fine."
Suddenly, a hare ran past them, startling Princess Changle and nearly falling. Li Yifeng was quick to catch her.
"Princess, don't be afraid, it's just a wild rabbit." Li Yifeng comforted her.
Princess Changle took a deep breath and calmed herself down. "Yifeng, am I really useless? I always cause you trouble."
Li Yifeng shook his head gently. "Princess, please don't say that. You are the bravest woman in my heart."
They continued on their journey, the birds in the forest singing happily, as if to encourage them. However, their hearts were still heavy, not knowing what was waiting for them ahead.
Finally, they emerged from the forest and arrived at a quiet little village. The houses were arranged in an orderly fashion, and smoke curled from the chimneys. A few children were playing at the entrance, and upon seeing them, they gathered around curiously.
"Who are you?" a little boy asked with his eyes wide open.
Li Yifeng quickly said, "Little friend, we are just passing by. We are tired and want to rest in the village."
The little boy looked at them, turned around and ran back to the village. After a while, a kind old woman came over.
"Children, judging from your appearance, you must have gone through a lot of hardships. Come to my house and have a seat," said the old woman.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle gratefully followed the old woman to her home. The old woman brought them hot water and food. Although it was just simple food, it was incomparably delicious to them.
"Thank you, Auntie." Princess Changle said.
The old woman looked at them with a smile. "Don't be polite, children. You look like you're trying to avoid something."
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle looked at each other, hesitated for a moment, and told the old woman what had happened.
The old woman sighed. "Poor child, this is the way of the world. But you must be careful, those pursuers will not let you go easily."
After resting for a night at the old woman's house, Li Yifeng and Princess Changle set out on their escape again, their hearts filled with gratitude and confusion about the future.
A few days later, they arrived at a bustling town. The town was bustling with people. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle carefully moved among the crowd, trying not to attract attention.
Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared before them. It turned out to be a palace guard who had once been a close confidant of Princess Changle.
"Princess!" the guard shouted in surprise.
Princess Changle and Li Yifeng were startled and turned around to leave.
"Princess, don't run. It's me, Xiao Dezi." The guard said hurriedly.
Princess Changle stopped and looked at the guard. "Xiao Dezi, why are you here?"
Xiao Dezi looked around and said in a low voice, "Princess, His Majesty has been looking for you. He is very worried about you."
Princess Changle shook her head. "I won't go back. Yifeng and I are truly in love. Please don't tell His Majesty we're here."
Xiao Dezi sighed helplessly. "Princess, why are you doing this? But I won't betray you. You must be careful."
After saying that, Xiao Dezi turned and left, disappearing into the crowd.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle continued to wander around the town, looking for an opportunity to leave. However, they did not know that Emperor Taizong had already learned of their whereabouts in the palace.
"Send someone to bring the princess back immediately!" Taizong said angrily.
A group of elite pursuers set out again, heading towards the town.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle finally found an opportunity to leave the city, and they ran non-stop towards the outside of the city. However, before they had run far, they heard the sound of horse hooves and shouts coming from behind them.
"Princess, Li Yifeng, you can't escape!"
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle looked back and saw that the pursuers were getting closer and closer, with expressions of despair on their faces.
At this moment, the sky suddenly began to rain heavily. The rain instantly soaked their bodies, the road became muddy, and the speed of the pursuers was also affected.
"Princess, let's go!" Li Yifeng pulled Princess Changle and rushed into the rain.
They ran desperately in the rain, which blurred their vision and made it difficult for them to see the road ahead. Princess Changle accidentally fell to the ground, and Li Yifeng quickly helped her up.
"Princess, are you okay?" Li Yifeng asked anxiously.
Princess Changle shook her head. "Yifeng, I'm fine. Let's keep running."
They supported each other and struggled forward in the rain. After running for an unknown amount of time, they arrived in front of a dilapidated temple.
"Let's go in and hide from the rain." Li Yifeng said.
They walked into the temple, which was filled with an old smell and the Buddha statues were covered with dust and cobwebs. They found a corner and sat down to rest.
Princess Changle's body kept shaking. Li Yifeng took off his coat and put it on her.
"Princess, please rest for a while. We will leave after the rain stops." Li Yifeng said.
Princess Changle leaned in Li Yifeng's arms and gradually fell asleep. Li Yifeng looked at her haggard face and secretly vowed in his heart that he must protect her.
The rain finally stopped, and Li Yifeng and Princess Changle walked out of the temple and continued on their way. However, their fate seemed to have been predetermined, and no matter how they struggled, they could not escape the invisible shackles.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle stopped in front of a steep mountain. The mountain was so high that it reached the clouds, and the steep cliffs were daunting.
"Princess, this mountain is our only way out. As long as we cross this mountain, we can escape the pursuers." Li Yifeng said.
Princess Changle looked at the mountain, her heart filled with fear. "Yifeng, I'm afraid..."
Li Yifeng held Princess Changle's hand. "Princess, don't be afraid. I will always be with you."
They began to climb the mountain. The road was rugged and difficult to walk on, and every step was full of danger. Li Yifeng led the way, carefully protecting Princess Changle.
Suddenly, Princess Changle slipped and nearly fell off the cliff. Li Yifeng was quick to catch her.
"Princess, be careful!" Li Yifeng's voice was full of tension.
Princess Changle turned pale with fear. "Yifeng, I..."
"Princess, don't be afraid, I'm here." Li Yifeng comforted her.
After a difficult climb, they finally reached the top of the mountain. However, before they could catch their breath, the pursuers caught up with them.
"Princess, Li Yifeng, you have nowhere to escape!" shouted the leader of the pursuing troops.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle looked at each other in despair, their eyes full of reluctance and determination.
"Princess, I have no regrets in my life for being able to fall in love with you." Li Yifeng said.
Princess Changle burst into tears. "Yifeng, I love you too."
At this moment, a mysterious old man appeared on the top of the mountain. He was dressed in a white robe, with an immortal look and a deep and kind gaze.
"Children, follow me," said the old man.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle hesitated for a moment, but finally followed the old man into the fog.
The pursuers searched everywhere on the top of the mountain, but could not find any trace of them.
The old man brought Li Yifeng and Princess Changle to a secluded valley. The valley was picturesque, with birds singing and flowers blooming, like a paradise on earth.
"Children, it's safe here for now, you should have a good rest." said the old man.
Li Yifeng and Princess Changle thanked the old man gratefully. They lived a peaceful life in the valley. However, they were always concerned about the outside world.
One day, Li Yifeng said to Princess Changle, "Princess, we can't hide here forever. We have to go back and face reality."
Princess Changle nodded. "Yifeng, I'll listen to you."
They said goodbye to the old man and walked out of the valley. When they set foot on the familiar land again, their hearts were filled with emotion and confusion.
The road ahead is still long, and they don’t know what awaits them, but they believe that as long as they love each other, they will be able to overcome all difficulties.
