Love and choices across time and space

Chapter 18 Princess, hold on a little longer, we will definitely escape

The night was as dark as ink, hanging heavy over the earth. Only a few sparse stars twinkled faintly in the sky. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle ran frantically along the rugged mountain road, their rapid breathing and chaotic footsteps shattering the silence of the night.

Princess Changle's delicate frame seemed increasingly exhausted from the arduous escape. Her hair lay dishevelled, a few strands soaked with sweat clinging to her fair, yet dust-stained face. Her once delicate makeup had long since been smudged by tears and sweat, revealing a look of terror and helplessness. Her ornate palace dress was now tattered, its hem ripped by thorns, and the golden phoenix embroidery had lost its former luster. The soles of her tiny embroidered shoes had long since worn through, and every step felt like treading on a knife's edge, leaving a trail of bloodstained footprints in her wake.

Li Yifeng was in no better condition. His once neat clothes were now tattered, revealing bloody scratches from branches and rocks. His face was thin and haggard, his eyes bloodshot, yet he still revealed a firm and resolute expression. He clutched Princess Changle's hand tightly, as if it were his only support in this endless darkness.

"Princess, hold on a little longer, we will definitely escape." Li Yifeng's voice was hoarse and rapid, with a hint of trembling, but his eyes were extremely firm.

Princess Changle raised her head slightly and looked at Li Yifeng, her eyes full of trust and dependence. "Yifeng, I will. As long as you are by my side, I am not afraid of anything." Her voice was weak but full of strength.

The mountain path was steep and rugged, littered with rocks of varying sizes and deep and shallow potholes. Li Yifeng carefully protected Princess Changle, each step difficult. Suddenly, Princess Changle slipped and fell forward.

"Princess!" Li Yifeng exclaimed, quickly reaching out and pulling her into his arms.

Princess Changle clutched Li Yifeng's clothes tightly, her body trembling constantly, tears welling up in her eyes again. "Yifeng, I really can't walk anymore."

Li Yifeng looked at her with heartache, gently wiping away the tears from her eyes. "Princess, don't be afraid. I'll carry you." He squatted down and gestured for Princess Changle to lie on his back.

Princess Changle hesitated for a moment, but eventually she lay on Li Yifeng's back. Li Yifeng gritted his teeth, stood up, and continued to move forward with Princess Changle on his back. His steps were heavy and slow, but he never stopped for a moment.

The trees lining the mountain road were eerie, like ferocious monsters baring their fangs and claws. A cool breeze rustled the leaves, as if whispering something. Princess Changle couldn't help but shrink her neck and bury her head in Li Yifeng's back.

"Yifeng, I feel like something is following us in this woods." Her voice trembled and was full of fear.

Li Yifeng's heart tightened, but he still comforted her: "Princess, don't be afraid, it's just the wind, it's nothing serious."

However, his heartbeat accelerated involuntarily. He looked around vigilantly, holding a stick he had picked up from the ground tightly in his hand, just in case.

After walking for an unknown amount of time, they finally emerged from the woods. Before them lay a turbulent river, its water gleaming silver in the moonlight, its roaring water deafening.

Li Yifeng put Princess Changle down and stared at the river in front of him, his brow furrowed. "Princess, the river is flowing too fast. We have to find a way to cross it."

Princess Changle looked at the surging river, her heart filled with fear. "Yifeng, can we make it?"

Li Yifeng pondered for a moment, then said, "Princess, please wait here. I'll go find some branches and vines to make a simple raft."

Princess Changle nodded, her eyes filled with worry. "Yifeng, be careful."

Li Yifeng turned and walked into the woods, searching for suitable materials. His hands were cut by branches, bleeding profusely, but he was completely unaware. After some effort, he finally found enough branches and vines to make a simple raft.

"Princess, we can cross the river now." Li Yifeng took Princess Changle's hand and carefully helped her onto the raft.

The raft was swaying in the turbulent river and was in danger of being swept away at any time. Li Yifeng used a wooden stick to support the riverbed and control the direction of the raft.

Princess Changle clung to the edge of the raft, her face pale. "Yifeng, I'm so scared."

"Princess, don't be afraid, I'm here." Li Yifeng comforted Princess Changle while paddling the raft with all his strength.

Finally, they successfully crossed the river. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle, soaked to the skin, collapsed on the shore.

"Princess, let's rest for a while before we go." Li Yifeng said, panting.

Princess Changle nodded weakly, and the two of them lay on the ground, gasping for breath.

After a short rest, they set out again. The night deepened, and darkness fell all around them. Only the sound of their footsteps echoed in the silence. Suddenly, a flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a dull rumble of thunder.

"Oh no, it's going to rain." Li Yifeng looked up at the sky, his expression becoming more solemn.

Before he could finish his words, raindrops as big as beans began to fall, hitting them. In an instant, they were soaked like drowned rats.

"Princess, run!" Li Yifeng took Princess Changle's hand and ran towards a cave not far away.

The cave was filled with a damp smell, and the ground was covered with rocks of all sizes. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle hid in a corner of the cave, shivering.

"Yifeng, will we continue like this?" Princess Changle's voice was filled with tears.

Li Yifeng hugged her tightly. "Princess, no, as long as we don't give up, we will definitely get out of this predicament."

The rain continued to fall with no sign of stopping. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle spent a long and cold night in the cave.

The next morning, the rain finally stopped. Sunlight shone through the cave, bringing a touch of warmth. Li Yifeng and Princess Changle walked out of the cave and continued their escape.

They walked through a barren field where the crops had long since withered and yellowed, swaying in the breeze, as if telling of the desolation and desolation of the land. Princess Changle's feet were worn raw by the stones on the road, and she frowned with pain with every step.

"Princess, let me carry you on my back." Li Yifeng said with concern.

Princess Changle shook her head. "Yifeng, I can still walk. Let's hurry on."

Li Yifeng nodded and helped Princess Changle continue forward.

Suddenly, there was a sound of horse hooves and shouts in the distance. Li Yifeng's heart tightened, "Princess, it's not good, the pursuers are coming."

They hurriedly hid in a nearby forest. Through the gaps in the leaves, Li Yifeng saw a group of armored soldiers on horseback galloping towards them.

"Princess, please don't make a sound." Li Yifeng covered Princess Changle's mouth, fearing that she would make any sound.

The soldiers searched the area but found no trace of them, so they continued to chase after them.

Li Yifeng and Princess Changle breathed a sigh of relief and walked out of the woods.

"Yifeng, where should we go?" Princess Changle looked around in confusion.

Li Yifeng pondered for a moment, "Princess, let's go south, maybe we can find a safe place."

They walked along the southern path. The sun gradually set in the west, and a gorgeous sunset glow appeared on the horizon. Princess Changle could no longer walk, so Li Yifeng carried her on his back again and walked forward step by step.

Night fell again, and they came to a small village. The village was quiet, with only a few houses showing faint lights in the windows.

"Princess, let's go knock on the door and see if we can find some food and a place to stay." Li Yifeng said.

Princess Changle nodded.

Li Yifeng knocked on a door, the door opened, and an old farmer stuck his head out.

"Who are you?" The old farmer looked at them warily.

Li Yifeng quickly said, "Old man, we are on our way and got lost. Can we stay here for one night?"

The old farmer looked them up and down and said, "Come in."

Li Yifeng and Princess Changle walked into the house, and the old farmer brought them some simple tea and rice.

"Thank you, old man." Li Yifeng said gratefully.

After dinner, Li Yifeng and Princess Changle slept in a simple room arranged by the old farmer.

They slept particularly soundly that night.

The next morning, they said goodbye to the old farmer and continued on their escape.

In the days that followed, they experienced countless hardships and dangers. Sometimes, they encountered bad weather, with strong winds and heavy rain leaving them with nowhere to hide; sometimes, they encountered ferocious beasts. Fortunately, Li Yifeng always responded with wit and protected Princess Changle's safety.

During this long escape, the relationship between Li Yifeng and Princess Changle became stronger. They supported and encouraged each other, always holding hope for the future in their hearts.

Finally, one day, they came to a remote valley with beautiful scenery, like a paradise on earth.

"Princess, maybe we can live in seclusion here." Li Yifeng said.

Princess Changle looked at Li Yifeng and nodded. "As long as I can be with you, anywhere is fine."

They built a simple wooden house in the valley and lived a peaceful life. However, they knew that this peace might only be temporary, but as long as they were with each other, no matter what they encountered in the future, they were no longer afraid.
