Love and choices across time and space

Chapter 13 Yifeng, I... I really can't walk anymore

The night was as dark as ink, thick and impenetrable, engulfing the entire wilderness in boundless darkness. A cold moon hung high in the sky, its silvery light seeming so cold and lonely, barely illuminating the outlines of this desolate land. The grass rustled in the night wind, as if hiding countless unknown fears.

Princess Changle clung to Li Yifeng's side. Her once magnificent palace dress was now tattered, its hems ripped by thorns and hanging in tatters. The delicate embroidery was obscured by dust and stains. Her silky hair fell messily over her shoulders, a few strands plastered to her pale cheeks. Her eyes, once bright as stars, were now filled with fear and exhaustion. Her lips were chapped and trembling, and every breath seemed labored.

"Yifeng, I... I really can't walk anymore." The princess's voice was so weak that it was almost drowned out by the sound of the wind. Her legs were trembling, as if she would collapse to the ground at the next moment.

Li Yifeng stopped and turned. His clothes were equally tattered, and his body was covered in wounds, some still oozing blood. But his eyes remained firm, filled with concern for the princess. "Princess, hold on a little longer. We will definitely find a way out." His voice was hoarse but full of strength, trying to give the princess a glimmer of hope.

Li Yifeng reached out to support the princess's shaky body, allowing her to lean on him. He looked at the princess's helpless eyes, and a pang of pain pierced his heart. "Princess, look at the North Star. Perhaps it can guide us." He raised his head and pointed to the distant starry sky.

The princess raised her head with great effort, gazing at the twinkling stars, her eyes filled with confusion. "Yifeng, I... I don't understand this."

Li Yifeng held the princess's hand tightly, trying to convey some warmth and strength. "Don't be afraid, Princess. As long as I'm here, I'll protect you." His eyes were firm, as if he were swearing an oath to the whole world.

They continued to trudge forward, the ground beneath their feet bumpy and overgrown with weeds, and sharp stones occasionally pricked their soles. Every step the princess took required immense effort, her breathing becoming increasingly rapid, her delicate body trembling in the wind.

"Princess, be careful!" Li Yifeng was quick-witted and quick-handed, and he grabbed the princess who was almost tripped.

The princess couldn't help but shed tears, "Yifeng, am I a burden to you? If it weren't for me, you might have already..."

Li Yifeng gently wiped away the princess's tears, "Princess, please don't say such things. It is the greatest honor of my life to be able to accompany you."

A cold wind blew, and the weeds rustled, as if countless pairs of eyes were peeping at them in the darkness. The princess couldn't help but shudder and subconsciously grabbed Li Yifeng's sleeve.

"Yifeng, I'm scared." The princess' voice was filled with tears.

Li Yifeng hugged the princess tightly in his arms, "Don't be afraid, Princess. I am here and will not let anything hurt you." His heartbeat sounded in the princess's ears, steady and powerful.

Li Yifeng observed his surroundings vigilantly, holding the short sword tightly in his hand. The blade gleamed coldly in the moonlight. Suddenly, he found a huge rock in front of him. The shape of the rock looked particularly strange in the night.

"Princess, let's go to that rock and rest for a while." Li Yifeng said.

The princess nodded, and the two of them, supporting each other, walked with difficulty to the rock. The princess slowly sat down against the rock, breathing heavily, her chest heaving violently.

Li Yifeng pulled out the worn-out kettle from his bosom and gently shook it. Only a few precious drops of water remained. He hesitated for a moment, then handed the kettle to the princess. "Princess, please drink some water to moisten your throat."

The princess took the kettle, took a sip, and then handed it back to Li Yifeng. "Yifeng, you drink too."

Li Yifeng shook his head, "Princess, please keep it. I'm not thirsty yet."

The princess looked at Li Yifeng, her eyes full of heartache. "Yifeng, don't lie to me. We have to hold on together."

Li Yifeng smiled helplessly, took the kettle, and took a sip gently. The cool water drops slid across his dry throat, bringing a brief comfort.

At this moment, a subtle sound came from the surrounding grass, as if something was slowly approaching. Li Yifeng immediately became alert and gripped his dagger tightly, "Princess, stay here and don't move."

He walked cautiously toward the bushes, his heart beating rapidly, and every step was filled with vigilance. Suddenly, a hare jumped out of the bushes and disappeared into the darkness in an instant. Li Yifeng breathed a sigh of relief and turned back to the princess.

"It's just a hare, Princess, it's okay." Li Yifeng said.

The princess patted her chest lightly and said, "I was scared to death."

Li Yifeng looked at the princess and said, "Princess, rest for a while, then we will continue on our journey."

The princess nodded and closed her eyes, trying to regain some strength. Li Yifeng stood aside, looking forward with a firm gaze, thinking about the next direction.

After an unknown amount of time, the princess slowly opened her eyes. "Yifeng, let's go."

Li Yifeng helped the princess up, and the two continued to grope their way through the wilderness. The moonlight was like water, casting two slender, lonely shadows on them.

As they walked, the princess suddenly stopped, a look of despair on her face. "Yifeng, I feel like we've been going in circles."

Li Yifeng frowned and looked around, trying to find some familiar landmarks. "Princess, don't worry, let me think of a solution."

Li Yifeng tried to recall the method he had read in books about how to determine direction. He observed the direction of the trees' growth and found that some of the branches on the side with fewer branches seemed to point north. "Princess, the branches are thinner here, maybe this is the north."

A glimmer of hope ignited in the princess's eyes, "Then let's go in this direction."

They walked in the direction Li Yifeng pointed, and the road became increasingly rugged and difficult to walk on. The princess's steps became heavier and heavier, and she was almost being dragged forward by Li Yifeng.

"Yifeng, I really can't walk anymore." The princess' voice was full of despair.

"Princess, I'll carry you on my back." Li Yifeng squatted down and motioned the princess to lie down on him.

The princess hesitated for a moment, but still lay on Li Yifeng's broad back. Li Yifeng felt the princess's body was light and soft, but at this moment it became a heavy responsibility on his shoulders.

Li Yifeng carried the princess on his back, walking with difficulty, step by step. His breathing became rapid and heavy, and sweat soaked his clothes, leaving traces on his back. But his steps did not stop for a moment, and he moved forward firmly.

"Yifeng, are you tired?" The princess asked softly in his ear, her voice full of concern.

"Princess, I'm not tired. As long as I can take you out of this wilderness, I can endure anything." Li Yifeng said through gritted teeth, and every word seemed to have exhausted all his strength.

Suddenly, a sinister wolf howl was heard in the distance, sounding particularly terrifying in the silent wilderness. The princess's body trembled violently, and she tightly hugged Li Yifeng's neck with both hands. "Yifeng, it's a wolf!"

Li Yifeng's heartbeat instantly accelerated, and the veins on his forehead bulged. "Don't be afraid, Princess. I'm here."

He quickened his pace, hoping to find a safe place as soon as possible. However, the wolf howling became closer and closer, as if the wolf pack was approaching quickly.

Li Yifeng looked around and found a cave not far away. "Princess, let's go hide in that cave."

They ran towards the cave. After entering the cave, Li Yifeng found a big rock and blocked the entrance with great effort.

"Princess, please hide here. I'll go out and take a look." Li Yifeng took a deep breath and prepared to face the danger outside the cave.

The princess held onto Li Yifeng's clothes tightly, her eyes filled with fear and reluctance. "Yifeng, don't leave me."

Li Yifeng gently patted the princess's hand and gave her a comforting smile. "Don't worry, Princess. I'll be back soon."

Li Yifeng walked out of the cave cautiously, holding the dagger tightly in his hand. Under the moonlight, the sword reflected a cold light. He saw several wolves wandering not far away, their eyes flashing a green light in the darkness, which was creepy.

Li Yifeng took a deep breath, mustered his courage, and walked toward the wolves. "Go away!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the wilderness.

The wolves were frightened by his momentum and stopped moving forward temporarily. Li Yifeng took the opportunity to pick up stones on the ground and threw them at the wolves.

The wolves were enraged and pounced on Li Yifeng. Li Yifeng brandished his dagger and engaged in a desperate fight with the wolves. His figure leaped and dodged in the moonlight, and each attack was full of power and determination.

The princess in the cave was extremely anxious when she heard the fierce fighting outside. "Yifeng, you must come back safely." She clasped her hands together and prayed silently.

After a fierce battle, Li Yifeng finally drove away the wolves. His body was covered with new wounds, and his clothes were stained with blood, but his eyes remained firm.

He returned to the cave. The princess saw how injured he was and burst into tears. "Yifeng, you are injured."

Li Yifeng comforted the princess, "Princess, I'm fine, just some minor injuries."

The princess gently wiped Li Yifeng's wound, each stroke being extra gentle, as if she was afraid of hurting him. "Yifeng, it's all my fault. I made you suffer."

Li Yifeng held the princess's hand and said, "Princess, as long as I can be with you, this little bit of suffering is nothing."

The two spent a long and terrifying night in the cave. The next morning, sunlight shone through the cracks in the cave, bringing a glimmer of warmth and hope.

Li Yifeng and the princess walked out of the cave and continued on their way. Their dry food had been eaten up, their water bottles were empty, and hunger and thirst were tormenting them.

"Yifeng, I'm so hungry." The princess said in a weak voice.

Li Yifeng was looking for food when he suddenly saw some wild fruits on a tree. "Princess, please wait here while I pick some wild fruits."

Li Yifeng climbed up the tree with great effort and carefully picked the wild fruits. However, these wild fruits were not tasty, sour and astringent, but they still swallowed them reluctantly, just to fill their stomachs.

"Princess, hold on a little longer, there may be a village ahead." Li Yifeng encouraged, even though he himself didn't know how far the road ahead was.

The princess nodded, "Well, I believe you."

They walked for a long time and finally saw a clear stream.

"Princess, there's water!" Li Yifeng said excitedly, with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

They ran to the stream and drank from it in big gulps. The cool water moistened their dry throats and restored some strength to them.

After drinking the water, they continued on their journey. By this time, the princess's feet had been rubbed with blisters, and every step she took was painful.

"Princess, let me carry you on my back." Li Yifeng carried the princess on his back again and walked forward with firm steps.

The princess leaned on Li Yifeng's back and said, "Yifeng, it would be great if we could keep going like this."

Li Yifeng smiled and said, "Princess, when we get out of this wilderness, there will be a better life waiting for us."

Just when they were about to despair, the outline of a temple appeared in the distance.

"Princess, look, there is a temple over there!" Li Yifeng said excitedly, as if he had seen a life-saving straw.

They quickened their pace and headed towards the temple. Although the temple was dilapidated, it was a temporary haven for them.

Walking into the temple, an old atmosphere permeated the air. The Buddha statues were covered with dust and cobwebs, and the surrounding walls were also a bit mottled.

"Princess, let's rest here for a while." Li Yifeng gently put the princess down.

The princess leaned against the Buddha statue and closed her eyes, exhausted. Li Yifeng searched around the temple, hoping to find something useful.

He found a tattered bundle in the corner. When he opened it, he found some dry food and a water bag inside.

"Princess, we have food!" Li Yifeng ran back to the princess excitedly.

The princess opened her eyes and a smile appeared on her face. This was the first time they had seen hope in a while. They wolfed down their dry food and drank water, feeling the long-lost feeling of fullness.

"Yifeng, this must be God's blessing on us." The princess said, her eyes full of gratitude.

Li Yifeng nodded and said, "Princess, after you have rested well, we will continue our journey. We will definitely be able to get out of this wilderness."

They rested for a while in the temple, then set out on their journey again, this time with hope in their hearts.

However, fate did not seem to let them off easily. On their way, a heavy rain suddenly began to fall.

"Princess, run!" Li Yifeng pulled the princess and ran in the rain, looking for a place to shelter.

Their clothes were instantly soaked by the rain, sticking heavily to their bodies. The rain wet their eyes, blurring their vision.

Finally, they found a cave, which was dark, damp, and filled with a foul smell.

"Princess, please take shelter here first." Li Yifeng said with a hint of fatigue in his voice.

The princess was shivering with cold, her lips turning purple. Li Yifeng took off his coat and put it on the princess.

"Yifeng, you will catch a cold." The princess said, her voice full of concern.

Li Yifeng smiled and said, "Princess, I'm fine. Don't get cold."

The rain continued to fall, seemingly without end, and they waited in the cave, filled with anxiety.

"Yifeng, when will the rain stop?" the princess asked, her eyes full of helplessness.

Li Yifeng looked outside the cave and said, "Princess, don't worry, the rain will eventually stop."

After an unknown amount of time, the rain finally stopped and they walked out of the cave and continued on their way.

After several days and nights of arduous journey, they finally saw the village in the distance.

"Princess, we finally got out!" Li Yifeng said excitedly, with joy shining in his eyes.

Tears glistened in the princess' eyes. "Yifeng, thank you."

They walked towards the village, their steps heavy but full of hope. However, they did not know that new challenges and tests were waiting for them...
