Dressing as Ziwei makes the Qing Dynasty more powerful
Chapter 33 Travel
As the hydrangea traced a graceful arc through the air, the men's gazes followed closely, surging toward it like a tide. Amidst this surging crowd, a haggard man in tattered clothes was instantly crushed to the ground. His eyes widened in shock as he watched an object plummet from the sky, finally landing safely in his arms.
In an instant, the surrounding crowd seemed to be driven by an invisible force and quickly dispersed to all sides, making room for an open space.
The man was bewildered, staring down at the object in his arms, and found in disbelief that it was the hydrangea thrown by Miss Du.
At that moment, Xiaoyanzi nimbly slid through the crowd and came to the man. When she saw the embroidery ball tightly in his hand, she excitedly shouted, "The groom is here! The groom is here!" As she shouted, she pulled the man up and dragged him towards the embroidery building.
Miss Du's originally shy and delicate face instantly lost its color and turned as pale as paper after seeing the strange man gradually approaching.
Seeing this, Mr. Du hurriedly quickened his pace and ran downstairs, followed closely by several servants.
Xiaoyanzi stopped, turned to look at the man, and asked, "What's your name?"
The man looked around tremblingly and stammered, "Qi... Qi Zhigao, my name is Qi Zhigao."
Upon hearing this, Xiaoyanzi immediately raised her voice and shouted towards the embroidery building above: "The groom's name is Qi Zhigao, Miss Du, get ready to get married!" Her voice was like a bell, resounding through the sky.
Miss Du's body was trembling slightly, and it seemed that she would collapse to the ground at any time. Fortunately, the maid beside her was quick-witted and rushed forward to support her.
Master Du looked up and down at the ragged man. He knew he was the beggar who had been begging in the city. He immediately grabbed the ball and said loudly, "This time doesn't count. Toss it again."
Xiaoyanzi's smile froze on her face. "They got the bouquet, so why do you say it doesn't count? Didn't you say that anyone of the right age and unmarried could receive the bouquet?"
After she finished speaking, she looked at Qi Zhigao, who understood. "I'm twenty years old and have never married. I'm just a child from a poor family, so how can I dare to talk about getting married?"
"You are quite self-aware." Mr. Du snorted coldly and turned to leave, but was stopped by Xiaoyanzi.
"Sir, your Du family is a prominent family. How can you go back on your word? No, they must be married today. Otherwise... otherwise, you will be guilty of deceiving the emperor!"
Xiaoyanzi looked at the emperor walking towards them, and felt confident. She put her hands on her hips and looked at Master Du with a fierce look.
Being accused of such a crime for no reason, Master Du was also angry. "Where did you come from, little girl? How dare you interfere in the affairs of my Du family? I would have agreed to this marriage with anyone else today, but not with him."
Qi Zhigao wanted to sneak away because of his glare, but just as he took a step, Xiaoyanzi grabbed his arm and said, "Girl, please let me go. I really don't dare to marry you."
"If you can do it, then you can do it. How can you be spineless? I see that you are also a cultured person. How can you look down on yourself? Yongqi, don't you agree?"
Yongqi smiled dotingly and looked at Master Du with a cold face, "Since Xiuqiu has chosen her, you must admit it, otherwise your Du family will be in big trouble."
Qianlong walked up to him and looked at Qi Zhigao with interest. "You look like a scholar, have you ever taken the imperial examination?"
Qi Zhigao nodded and said, "I passed the provincial examination once, but later I failed several times, but I failed every time."
Hearing this, Qianlong smiled without saying anything, took a few steps back and stood beside the queen to watch.
"My Lord, do you disagree with this marriage?" the Queen asked in a low voice.
Qianlong patted her hand, looked at Ziwei not far away and asked loudly, "Ziwei, what are your thoughts on this matter?"
The people around him followed his gaze and looked over. Ziwei only curled her lips slightly when she saw this. Then, she took Yongji's hand and slowly walked over. After stopping, she began to carefully examine the man in front of her named Qi Zhigao.
This man looked shabby from head to toe. His clothes were so tattered that they seemed like they would break into strips at any time, and they were covered with dirt and dust. His hair was also tangled and extremely dirty, and it was even difficult to distinguish its original color. Looking at his feet, his shoes had been worn out for a long time, with several huge holes exposed, and his disgusting toes were faintly visible.
Ziwei frowned, not disguising her contempt as she spoke, "You keep calling yourself a scholar, but in my eyes, I can't find a single trace of a scholar's integrity or demeanor in you. As a man, I haven't noticed a single ounce of responsibility in you. You're in your twenties now, a time when you should be full of vigor and ambition, but you're not motivated to make progress, unwilling to work to make a living. Instead, you shamelessly beg for a living. This alone proves that you're nothing but a pleasure-seeking, idle, lazy person!"
How can someone like you be worthy of Miss Du? She is a rich lady, so naturally she hopes to find a man of good character and integrity as her lifelong partner, not to help the poor and destitute, let alone support an idle parasite. If you are really accepted into the Du family, it will undoubtedly become a great shame for the entire Du family and the beginning of its decline!
She looked at Xiaoyanzi and said, "Xiaoyanzi, since you think Qi Zhigao is a promising man, why don't you marry him?"
"Bullshit! He's so disgusting, how could I marry him!" Xiaoyanzi blurted out when she heard Ziwei say that. Seeing everyone around her covering their mouths and laughing at her, her face flushed and she pointed at Ziwei and cursed, "Ziwei, how can you say that to me? I didn't throw the ball. They say if you marry a chicken, you follow the chicken; if you marry a dog, you follow the dog. If Miss Du marries him, of course she will follow him to his home."
Ziwei chuckled. "Marry a chicken, follow the chicken; marry a dog, follow the dog." If a woman's quality of life declines after marriage, it's enough to prove that the man she married is useless. Knowing that he is such a person, why would she marry him? Is it just to continue the family line? Or are there those cumbersome formalities that shackle a woman's happiness?"
She turned her head and looked upstairs. "Miss Du, women don't have to get married. If your family is short of an heir, you could consider finding a man to take over the father's inheritance. As long as you are strong enough, what do those rumors outside mean? Master Du, don't trust the idea of throwing a ball to choose a husband. Are those rumors more important than your daughter's happiness?"
