High in the sky, a North Vietnamese plane streaked through the clouds, leaving a white trail in the clear sky.
Inside the cabin, Ho Chi Ming leaned against the window seat, gazing deeply at the rolling mountains outside the window.
His signature white goatee trembled slightly, and every wrinkle on his face seemed to tell a story about struggle and peace.
Opposite him, Li Sun and Chen Rifang were talking in low voices, occasionally casting concerned glances at him.
"President, you should take a break,"
Li Sun suggested softly, his sharp eyes filled with worry.
"You've been thinking all along the way. We still have a few hours to go before we reach the Dragon Kingdom's capital."
Hu Zhiming shook his head slightly and responded with a wry smile.
"Old friend, how can you sleep at this hour?"
His voice was hoarse but steady, like a bronze bell that could not be erased by the long years, "If Nguyen Van Thieu's news is true.
The Dragon Kingdom is gathering its troops and preparing to attack us. This misunderstanding could plunge the two brother countries into the abyss of war.
Chen Rifang frowned.
"Chairman, I always thought this was some kind of conspiracy."
"From all the evidence, it seems that Longguo's support for us has always been sincere. How could they suddenly decide to attack us? There were no signs, no diplomatic warnings."
Hu Zhiming sighed and turned his gaze to the window again.
"The problem is that the special envoy from the Bear Country did propose to us to jointly attack the Dragon Country, and Nguyen Van Thieu has always shown great enthusiasm for this."
"If this information were to reach the Dragon Nation through some channel, they would likely think we were plotting betrayal."
The cabin fell silent, and several senior North Vietnamese officials exchanged worried glances.
This sudden crisis caught everyone off guard.
The once stable regional relations seem to have become shaky in just a few days.
"We must explain clearly to the leaders of Longguo face to face,"
Hu Zhiming said firmly, his eyes shining with foresight and wisdom.
"Only by going there in person can we demonstrate our sincerity. North Vietnam will not betray its friends who have helped us, nor will it sacrifice long-term peace for short-term gains."
Li Sun nodded in agreement.
"Yes, Chairman. I believe the leaders of the Dragon Nation will understand our situation."
"We have consistently rejected the Russians' proposals and have shown no sign of joining their actions against China."
Ho Chi Minh stroked his trademark white beard and recalled past meetings with Dragon Kingdom leaders.
"We have inextricable ties with the Dragon Kingdom, not just ideologically, but also with deep historical and cultural ties."
“I don’t believe they would easily believe we would betray them. Someone must be trying to sow discord between them.”
"Nguyen Van Thieu," Chen Rifang said in a deep voice, "he has never concealed his ambition to recover Guangdong and Guangxi."
“If Longguo truly believes we have hostile intentions, he will be the biggest beneficiary.”
Hu Zhiming thought for a moment and his eyes became more determined.
"No matter what, when we reach the Imperial Capital, all will be revealed. Peace must be maintained, even at the risk of personal safety."
At this moment, the phone in the cabin suddenly rang.
The pilot's voice came through the speaker, with obvious tension.
"Comrade Chairman, we have just received a notice from the forward military base asking us to return immediately!"
“They said it was an emergency but didn’t explain why.”
Ho Chi Ming exchanged a puzzled look with the other leaders.
“Keep going,” he said firmly. “If we turn back now, it will only further deepen the misunderstanding. We must reach the imperial capital and explain everything face to face.”
The pilot tried to contact Dragon Country air traffic control again, but received only static.
Communications appear to be jammed.
"This is so strange," Li Sun whispered. "This seems more like an elaborate conspiracy."
Ho Chi Minh looked out the window. Their plane was flying through a thick layer of clouds. The border between Longguo and North Vietnam was not far away.
Just then, he noticed several small black dots approaching rapidly in the distance at an astonishing speed.
His weathered eyes suddenly widened, and he understood everything in an instant.
"Missiles!" he exclaimed, but his voice was surprisingly calm.
The cabin was instantly thrown into chaos. The other officers rushed to the windows, watching in horror as the missiles streaked across the sky, heading straight for them.
“Who is it?” Li Sun shouted, his face pale. “Longguo?”
Hu Zhiming shook his head, with a trace of compassion and enlightenment in his eyes.
"Not Dragon Nation. They wouldn't do that."
"This is a trap, a trap to completely break us off from the Dragon Nation."
The pilot desperately tried to evade the attack, but the civilian aircraft was no match for the speed of the military missile.
The missiles were getting closer and closer, and everyone in the cabin could see their flickering tail flames.
Hu Zhiming was surprisingly calm at this moment. He sat back in his seat, a look of transcendent calm on his face.
In his more than seventy years of struggle, from opposing French colonists to leading the country in its fight for independence, he has faced death many times.
Although the current crisis came suddenly, it did not scare him.
"If this is the end of me,"
He spoke softly, his voice almost drowned out by the roar of the plane making a sharp turn.
"My only regret is that I was not able to explain it clearly to the Dragon Nation leaders in person."
“Together we could have built a stronger Asia, an Asia that is not controlled by the West and the Russian bear.”
Chen Rifang gripped the armrest tightly, tears in his eyes: "Chairman, maybe the pilot can still avoid these missiles!"
But Hu Zhiming shook his head, his eyes showing the clarity of foreseeing the end of the world.
"It doesn't matter anymore. What matters is that, whatever our fate, the leaders of North Vietnam must understand one thing."
"Longguo is not our enemy. The real enemy is the external forces that try to divide us."
He turned to Li Sun and his voice became firm.
“If I’m gone, you must ensure that North Vietnam doesn’t embark on a path against the Dragon Kingdom. That would be a devastating disaster.”
Li Sun held back his tears and nodded solemnly.
At the same time, in a hidden valley on the China-Vietnam border, two men in plain clothes were observing the sky through high-powered telescopes.
One operated the portable radar device, while the other held the remote control, his finger hovering over the trigger button.
"Target locked," the Russian-speaking man reported expressionlessly, "all three missiles hit orbit."
“Confirmed,” another man operating the radar responded in English. “Expected to hit the target in fifteen seconds.”
The two men stared at the sky in silence, watching the North Vietnamese plane in the distance perform evasive maneuvers in vain.
"Who do you think they're going to blame for this?" the KGB agent asked, his voice filled with professional indifference.
The CIA agent shrugged. "According to the plan, North Vietnam would think it was Long Guo who did it, and Long Guo would think it was a North Vietnamese plane that violated airspace regulations and was automatically shot down by its air defense system. By the time the truth came to light, it would be too late."
"Comrade Joseph will be pleased," the KGB agent said. "Killing two birds with one stone: getting rid of Ho Chi Minh, a pro-dragon faction, and at the same time provoking a conflict between the two countries, creating favorable conditions for our Operation 'Polar Bear's Claw'."
The CIA agent nodded. "So does President Howell. He needs this conflict to ensure that Dragon Country cannot launch a manned spacecraft. I must admit that our cooperation has been smoother than expected."
"Look," the KGB agent pointed skyward, "the first missile is about to hit."
