Dust billowed across the "Tiger Roar" exercise field. Colonel Xue Changhe stood atop his command vehicle, his binoculars fixed on the faintly visible Blue Army positions several kilometers away. As the commander of the Red Army's reinforced regiment, this veteran, rich in combat experience, wore a look of disdain. He lowered his binoculars, his lips curled slightly, his eyes gleaming with confidence.
"Look carefully, comrades!" Xue Changhe's voice spread throughout the team through the car's loudspeaker system. "Those little guys on the other side actually wanted to use a battalion to defeat our entire regiment. It's a huge joke!"
He looked around. Nearly three thousand fully armed soldiers lined up in neat formations, dozens of tanks and armored vehicles formed a mighty formation, and artillery positions pointed their guns neatly into the distance. In comparison, the opposing combined arms battalion, with fewer than seven hundred men, looked insignificant.
"What do they mean? Do they look down on us real soldiers?" Xue Changhe's voice was filled with anger. "Don't be fooled by their fancy new gadgets! Remember, the winner on the battlefield is always the one with more men and more firepower!"
The soldiers responded in unison: "Yes! Commander!" The sound echoed across the training ground.
Xue Changhe nodded with satisfaction: "Today, we will teach those guys who only know how to talk about war on paper a bloody lesson! Let them understand that real wars are not fought in a laboratory! All companies, deploy according to the predetermined plan and prepare for battle!"
As the order was issued, the Red Army's reinforced regiment began deploying according to traditional military doctrine. Infantry battalions formed a wide front, tanks and armored vehicles formed assault groups on the flanks, and artillery occupied the commanding heights in the rear. The entire deployment was textbook-like, demonstrating the Red Army's mastery of traditional tactics.
At the same time, the situation was completely different on the Blue Army's position a few kilometers away.
Battalion Commander Wang Gang didn't stand on a high platform and deliver a passionate speech. Instead, he crouched in a well-camouflaged tactical command post, surrounded by squad leaders from various arms. The tactical tablet before him displayed the Red Army's movements in real time.
"They really did deploy according to the textbook," Wang Gang said with a smile. "Typical Soviet tactical thinking, pursuing a large-scale frontal breakthrough."
He turned to the communications team leader. "All units confirm communications status."
"Reporting to the battalion commander, the fully integrated battalion communication network connection is good, with data latency less than 50 milliseconds. All combat units have entered radio silence, maintaining only encrypted data links."
In contrast to the Red Army's imposing display, the Blue Army's combined arms battalion's deployment was virtually unnoticeable. Over 600 soldiers were divided into 12 independent combat teams, each comprised of approximately 50 soldiers from various arms. These teams, rather than forming traditional battle lines, were dispersed across a wide area at key points of terrain. While seemingly disorganized, they were actually interconnected.
What is even more surprising is their equipment - those streamlined electric military vehicles shuttled silently between the jungles and hills, unlike the red side's fuel vehicles that made a roar and emitted black smoke; the compact portable multi-function radar replaced the bulky traditional equipment; each combat team was equipped with several micro drones, which had secretly taken off and were silently collecting intelligence over the red side's positions.
Wang Gang tapped a few times on his tactical tablet, making final adjustments. "According to the plan, we won't attack proactively, but will lure them into the 'spider web' we've designed. All combat units, take note! Stay hidden and wait for the signal."
"Yes!" The team leaders responded in a low voice and then conveyed the instructions to their respective units through the data terminal.
On the high ground on the north side of the exercise ground, on a special reviewing stand, senior generals including Chairman of the Central Military Commission Zhou Zhihai and Chief of the General Staff Liu Zhiguo were observing the movements of both sides through high-powered telescopes and real-time battlefield display screens.
"The Red Army's deployment is very standard," Major General Zhang Lixin commented. "Captain Xue, while stubborn, is a true master of traditional tactics. Look at that echelon deployment; it's a textbook example."
Liu Zhiguo nodded slightly, but focused more on the Blue Army. "Interesting! This young man, Wang Gang, has taken the concept of a combined battalion to its fullest potential. Did you notice? He doesn't have a traditional front and rear. The entire battalion functions as an organic whole, with each combat group able to operate independently while also supporting each other."
General Chen held up a telescope and pointed at several key points. "Look at those hidden spots. The Blue Army has deployed small electronic warfare equipment. If I'm right, they intend to disrupt the Red Army's communication system, forcing them to return to a less efficient single-line command mode."
Chairman Zhou Zhihai of the Military Commission remained silent until now, then slowly spoke: "The significance of this confrontation goes beyond a simple organizational experiment. It is a clash of two military philosophies—one relying on superior numbers and firepower, the other pursuing flexibility and information superiority. Today we will learn which philosophy prevails on the modern battlefield."
On the exercise grounds, the Red Army's reinforced regiment had completed its deployment. Xue Changhe radioed the attack order: "Attention, all regiments! Advance toward the Blue Army's positions as planned. Our goal is to completely annihilate the enemy within an hour! The 1st and 2nd Infantry Battalions will be responsible for the frontal breakthrough. The tank battalion will conduct an assault around the left flank. The artillery will prepare a salvo to suppress the enemy's firepower points!"
As the order was given, the massive Red Army mechanized formations began to advance. The ground trembled slightly beneath the tank tracks and heavy vehicles, stirring up clouds of yellow sand. Xue Changhe stood atop the command vehicle, his expression confident, occasionally scanning the enemy with binoculars. In his view, victory was only a matter of time; the Blue Army's small force was nothing to fear.
However, as the Red Army gradually moved deeper into the preset battlefield, strange things began to happen.
"Report to the regiment commander, the communication between the first and third companies has been interrupted!" the communications officer reported hurriedly.
"What's going on?" Xue Changhe frowned.
"Suspected electronic interference, all our radio frequencies have been suppressed!"
Almost at the same time, the reconnaissance team ahead sounded the alarm: "Enemy drones spotted! There are a lot of them, and they are circling over our positions!"
Xue Changhe's face darkened as he raised his binoculars and peered closely. To his surprise, he couldn't see any traditional defensive lines or large-scale concentrations—the Blue Army seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth. Just as he was puzzled, an alarm suddenly sounded from the electronic scoring system in the exercise area—the Red Army's vanguard battalion had "lost" nearly a third of its strength!
"Impossible!" Xue Changhe stared in disbelief at the battlefield map, which showed multiple Red Army armored units destroyed, while the Blue Army remained virtually unscathed. They saw no enemy, heard no intense fire, and didn't even realize they had entered the enemy's fire net. The combined battalion's seemingly haphazard deployment actually formed a meticulously designed "hunter's net," and the proud Red Army reinforced regiment, like unwitting prey, walked step by step into the enemy's trap.
The first round of the exercise unfolded in an unexpected way.
