Great Qi Dynasty

On July 15th, the Ghost Festival, all souls gather together.

In a remote mountain village in Beizhou, the sound of a miserable child crying was heard from a dilapidated courtyard, echoing throughout the village, but no one paid any attention.

In the yard, two children surrounded a woman and a girl of about twelve or thirteen, crying heart-wrenchingly.

"Mom, wake up..."

"Sister, please wake up, I'm scared..."

There were many villagers watching the fun in the yard. Although they felt sorry for the two children, no one came forward to comfort or help them. After all, no one dared to offend the daughter of the Shangshu Mansion.

In the summer of July, the sun shines scorchingly on the earth, and the air seems to be ignited, filled with a hot breath.

The cicadas kept chirping on the branches, as if protesting against the hot summer.

In the main seat of the room sat a sharp-tongued and mean young lady, with maids and servants standing beside her, fanning her.

She wore a gorgeous satin gown with elaborate embroidery on the hem, and a magnificent headdress woven from pearls and gems, like a dazzling crown.

She held a handkerchief to her nose to block out the unpleasant odor. Although she was dressed in gorgeous clothes, her expression of disgust did not show her noble temperament.

Listening to the crying of children and the incessant chirping of cicadas in the yard, she became irritated and said impatiently, "It's too noisy. Tell them to shut up."

The servants beside him hurried out and shouted at the crying child: "Stop crying! If you continue crying, I will throw you into the mountains to feed the wolves."

The two children were so scared that they held back their tears, and their unwillingness to cry made people feel distressed.

The five-year-old boy timidly looked at the servant who was speaking, carefully moved to his second sister Jiang Xue, and choked with sobs: "Second sister..."

Eleven-year-old Jiang Xue was so frightened that she quickly hugged her brother in her arms, gently patting his back to comfort him.

"Don't be afraid, brother. My second sister is here."

"Second sister, why haven't mother and eldest sister gotten up yet? I'm scared."

Although he was only six years old and didn't understand what life and death were, seeing blood coming out of his mother and elder sister's heads made him terrified and uneasy.

Jiang Xue knew that her mother and elder sister were killed by her father and that evil woman. She and her younger brother were the only ones left at home, and as an older sister she had to protect her younger brother.

She was only an eleven-year-old child. She was trembling with fear at the sight of the brutal servants, but she held her brother tightly in her arms, fearing that she would throw him into the mountains to feed the wolves.

In the room, Xue Ying, the concubine daughter of the Minister of Revenue, had a sinister look on her face and disapproved.

"Husband, please take care of these two children quickly. It's hot and smelly here. I can't stand it."

"Madam, Erya is easy to deal with."

He looked at Xue Ying cautiously and paused for a moment, "But Jiang Nan is a male of the Jiang family, so why not..."

Before he could finish, Xue Ying interrupted him, "Husband, we're already married and I'll give you a son."

"Don't forget what you promised my father. If you can't handle your family's affairs well, your official position will be in jeopardy!"

Xue Ying walked out of the room without looking back and glanced at the two children hugging each other.

Old Master Jiang looked at his eldest son and said, "Big Boss, Shen and Daya are already dead. We can do without Erya, but Jiang Nan is your eldest son. You can't do without him, otherwise you will be cursed by the world."

"Dad, you already know Miss Xue's attitude. If I want Jiang Nan, my official position will be in vain, and all the hard work I've put in studying for more than ten years will be in vain. Can you accept this?"

Old Lady Jiang looked at her husband and said quickly, "Old man, isn't our whole family saving money to support our eldest son's education just for this day when he can go to the capital and enjoy life with him? Don't hold us back at this critical moment."

"Our Jiang family has only had one scholar like the eldest son in the imperial examination for decades. This is a great event that will bring honor to our family. We must take good care of these two children for the sake of our descendants."

"Mother, after all, Jiang Nan is the son of our family..."

"The eldest brother will have a son in the future. What are you afraid of? Are you going to ruin the future of the entire Jiang family for a child?"

"If you lose his job because of this little thing, I will never forgive you."

Although Mr. Jiang said this, he certainly hoped that his son would have a high official salary and be granted a title of nobility or a military officer. Only by becoming the son-in-law of the Shangshu Mansion could he rise rapidly in the officialdom.

Old Mrs. Jiang quickly ordered, "Second son's wife, why are you still standing there? Hurry up and take the two children back home, pack your things, and go to the capital with your eldest brother."

The second son's wife quickly smiled and said, "Xiaoyu and Xiaoxi, go back with your mother."

The mother and her two children hurried back to their room to pack their things.

"Second brother, quickly get three or four people to drag Shen and Daya to the back hills and bury them. Otherwise, they'll stink in the hot summer."

"Mom, this isn't right! It's fine if my eldest brother divorces his eldest sister-in-law, but Erya and Jiang Nan are my eldest brother's biological children after all."

"Second brother, why are you so stubborn? Who is your mother doing this for? It's all for your son Xiaoyu to have a good future. It's also for you as a father to be proud. You can add another third place winner to our Jiang family."

After hearing this, Jiang Lao Er stopped talking. Who doesn't want their children to have a bright future?

Mrs. Jiang looked at Mr. Jiang and said firmly, "Old man, I will take care of the two children."

Old Master Jiang quickly looked at his wife and asked doubtfully, "How are you going to handle this? Don't do anything that will bring down the gods."

"Don't worry! They've called me grandma for so many years, I won't kill them."

"It would be a good thing for them if we could find a good family to sell it to."

"Go and find out quickly. The eldest brother and his family are leaving tomorrow, and our whole family will follow them."

"it is good."
