Chapter 59: Conspiracy, Swords and Shadows
Conspiracies are spreading, swords are flashing, and swords are flying
The atmosphere within Prince Zhao's residence suddenly grew solemn. Princess Shen and Prince Zhao's gazes met in the air, like two sparks quietly rubbing against each other in the air, poised to ignite an uncontrollable conflagration at any moment. She knew that at this moment, her collaboration with Prince Zhao had entered a new phase. Every step was fraught with uncertainty, and any slight misstep could plunge her into the abyss.
Prince Zhao sat expressionlessly on a large rosewood chair, his gaze deep, as if weighing something. Princess Shen's heartbeat seemed to slow at this moment, and every second was filled with a sense of oppression.
"Princess Shen," Prince Zhao finally spoke, his voice calm but brimming with authority. "You've clearly come here for more than just a desire to cooperate with me. You have a plan and a purpose, and I'm not someone who can be easily manipulated."
Princess Shen smiled faintly, her eyes revealing a hint of wisdom and calmness. "Prince Zhao, you're overthinking it. I simply want to work with you to deal with the upcoming situation. As for the purpose and plan... that's a compulsory course for all court scheming."
Prince Zhao was silent for a moment, staring into her eyes. "Since you're willing to sit down and discuss this with me, it means you've already seen through the situation. You said there's a powerful force behind the Qingyun Chamber of Commerce, perhaps someone in the imperial court. But do you know that the Crown Prince's death might not be what they wanted?"
Princess Shen's heart trembled. While she remained calm on the surface, her mind was racing. Prince Zhao's words surprised her somewhat, offering a different perspective. If the Qingyun Chamber of Commerce had truly infiltrated the palace, their true purpose might not simply be to destroy the Crown Prince; it might even be connected to the struggle for the Emperor's succession.
"What does Prince Zhao mean?" Princess Shen did not respond immediately, but asked slowly.
"I suspect there may be a deeper conspiracy behind the Crown Prince's death. If it was truly the work of the Qingyun Chamber of Commerce, they were likely being manipulated by someone higher up, perhaps even targeting a specific individual." A meaningful glint flashed in Prince Zhao's eyes. "You know, I've always had some suspicions... The Emperor's recent actions seem increasingly unusual."
Princess Shen was slightly taken aback, her mind growing wary. She didn't respond immediately, instead quietly observing Prince Zhao's expression. Prince Zhao's words hinted at a certain dissatisfaction with the Emperor, perhaps a long-standing grudge. This presented Princess Shen with a subtle opportunity. She knew that if she wanted to cooperate with Prince Zhao, she would have to uncover some of the palace's hidden secrets, secrets that could potentially become a deadly weapon in the near future.
"Prince Zhao, do you really think...there's something wrong with the emperor?" Princess Shen asked in a low voice. There was no provocation in her tone, but rather it was calm and contained a hint of tentativeness.
Prince Zhao's eyes grew deeper, a hint of doubt and vigilance in them: "What do you mean, Princess Shen? Do you really want to cooperate with me, or do you want to find out the emperor's secrets?"
Princess Shen didn't waver at all. Instead, she smiled calmly, "I just want to build trust with you. You know, the foundation of cooperation is trust. If you feel that I'm intentionally taking advantage of you, I can leave immediately."
Prince Zhao slowly leaned back in his chair and remained silent for a moment. Finally, his gaze grew sharp. "The Emperor's reaction to the Crown Prince's death is far too calm, even somewhat illogical. Normally, the Crown Prince was his dearest cherished child; he should have reacted more strongly than so calmly. I suspect someone else was behind the Crown Prince's death. As for who, I don't have an answer for now."
Princess Shen nodded slightly, her eyes deep. "Perhaps we shouldn't limit ourselves to the Qingyun Chamber of Commerce. If there really is a bigger mastermind behind this, those people may have more power plans."
When Prince Zhao heard this, a sharp flash of light flashed in his eyes: "Who do you think it is?"
Princess Shen didn't rush to respond, but lowered her head for a moment, pondering. She knew that while Prince Zhao appeared calm, deep within him lay a complex web of emotions and considerations. Every subtle action in the palace served a higher purpose. Now, Princess Shen's task was to try her best to pry open Prince Zhao's defenses and gain his support.
"Prince Zhao, perhaps we can start with the emperor's closest confidants." Princess Shen spoke slowly, her gaze as sharp as a knife. "If the crown prince's death was no accident, there must be some factors around the emperor that we have overlooked. If we can find these key clues, perhaps we can uncover the truth behind it."
Princess Shen smiled slightly. "I know. I never do meaningless things. Since we have chosen to cooperate, we should all understand that the reason behind this cooperation must be for our own benefit."
Prince Zhao chuckled: "You are indeed worthy of being a princess, you are very thoughtful."
Princess Shen didn't respond, but she was already plotting her next move. She knew the power struggle within the palace was more complex than ever. To break through these numerous defenses, she had to mobilize every available resource. And Prince Zhao might just be one of her most important pawns in this game.
As the night deepened, Princess Shen left Prince Zhao's residence, her heart already churning with turmoil. She knew the Crown Prince's death was only the beginning; the situation would inevitably become even more complex and confusing. The Qingyun Chamber of Commerce, Prince Zhao, the Emperor—all the forces seemed to be secretly intertwined in a vast web, and her every move would determine the outcome.
In this palace, no one can easily win the final victory. Princess Shen knows that only by being calmer and more courageous than anyone else can she stand out in this struggle and ultimately control her own destiny.
