The Bad Girl's Quick Transmigration System: Traveling Back and Forth
Chapter 610 The Eternal Fire
The air in the streets finally dispelled its former dullness, and a touch of life took hold. The grain shop's doors creaked shut, and the fresh aroma of grain wafted through the air once again. On the ridges of the fields, tiny green shoots broke through the soil, signaling a resurgence of hope. The clouds of worry gradually faded from people's faces, and they busied themselves with resuming their livelihoods.
So, someone advised Lin Wei: "Miss Lin, take a break! Now that there is no shortage of food, it's time for your female soldiers to take a break."
Lin Wei, the leader of the Falcon Squad, always exudes a gentle yet resilient spirit. She shook her head, her hair swirling in the wind. "We need to keep the porridge stall open, just in case any travelers get hungry. Besides, we can still make something else for everyone."
They immediately set to work. Next to the porridge stall, they set up a simple "convenience service station." Lacking proper tools, they contributed their own scissors and needles; lacking textbooks, they wrote on the ground with tree branches. Each of the female soldiers showcased their talents: some cut hair for the elderly and children, their skills not particularly refined, but their cuts were neat and tidy. Others, with their dexterity, helped the villagers repair broken farm tools and mend clothes. Lin Wei, a literate woman, read the newspaper and taught the children how to read.
Liu Cuihua's chubby little grandson has become a regular at the service station. Every day, he clings to Lin Wei like a little tail, asking in a baby voice, "Auntie Lin, please teach me how to write." Lin Wei never tires of her words, patiently holding his soft little hand as she writes stroke by stroke on the smooth dirt: "This is 'country,' the country of the country; this is 'home,' the home of the family. Remember, there is a home only where there is a country. A country is made up of millions of homes, and a home is the smallest country." The child repeats, his voice clear and crisp, like a thawed brook in early spring. Lin Wei looks at him, a gentle smile in her eyes, a smile that reflects her love for her child and her longing for the future.
No one could have imagined that beneath the peaceful backdrop, a crisis would quietly lurk. It was a sweltering night, the sky a thick, indissoluble black, as if someone had overturned an ink bottle. Suddenly, a fierce wind blew, and raindrops as big as beans clattered down, instantly forming threads and weaving curtains. Chaos reigned between heaven and earth. "Oh no! A flash flood is coming!" someone shouted.
Then came a deafening roar. The mountain behind the town, drenched by days of torrential rain, finally gave way. A mudslide, carrying boulders and broken logs, roared towards the village like an uncontrolled beast.
"Quick! Wake everyone up! Move!" Lin Wei's voice was especially clear and powerful in the wind and rain. She led the female soldiers, braving the pouring rain, knocking on doors and shouting. The rain blurred their vision, the mud trapped their steps. They fell and got up again, shouting hoarsely, "The flash flood is coming! Run! Get to higher ground!"
They carried the elderly with limited mobility on their backs, lifted up frightened and crying children, and trudged through the darkness and floodwaters. The icy rain soaked their clothes, and the biting cold penetrated their bones, but they had only one thought in their minds: Faster! Faster! Save even one more person!
When the last group of villagers were moved to the high ground behind the village, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and slumped in the mud, gasping for air. At that moment, Liu Cuihua suddenly cried out, "My grandson! My grandson! He's still sleeping in the house! I... I forgot he was still in the house!"
"What?!" Lin Wei stood up suddenly, her heart pounding. She looked back and saw the village was already a vast expanse of water, with houses teetering in the floodwaters, threatening to collapse at any moment.
"Captain! It's too dangerous! Going back now would be suicide!" Team member Xiaoyan grabbed Lin Wei's arm tightly, her face flushed with anxiety, tears almost coming out.
Lin Wei's eyes were as firm as steel. She shook Xiaoyan's hand away with all her might, leaving behind only one resounding sentence: "I'm the captain, I'm going!" Before she finished her words, she turned and, without hesitation, plunged into the raging flood. Her figure was frail but resolute, like a reed unyielding in the wind.
The muddy floodwaters were knee-deep, icy cold, and beneath her feet lay slippery mud and hidden obstacles. Lin Wei groped her way, taking one deep step and one shallow step, struggling to move forward toward Liu Cuihua's home. The sounds of wind and rain, the roar of collapsing houses, and the roar of the floodwaters intertwined, a thrilling and terrifying experience.
She finally reached the crumbling doorframe of Liu Cuihua's house. The house was in shambles, the floodwaters already reaching her waist. Holding her breath, she groped in the darkness until she finally found the small, shivering body beneath the bed.
"Don't be afraid, auntie is here!" Lin Wei hugged the child tightly, protecting him with her body, turned around and wanted to rush out.
At that moment, there was a loud "boom" as a huge rock, carried by the flood, smashed into the already dilapidated house. The beams broke and the walls collapsed.
"Be careful!" The heart-wrenching cries of the female soldiers were heard outside.
Lin Wei instinctively tucked the child closer to her body, her back facing the incoming rocks and broken beams. A sharp pain shot through her leg, and she nearly collapsed. But she gritted her teeth, mustered her last bit of strength, lifted the child high, and pushed it toward Xiaoyan and the villagers who had rushed over.
When Liu Cuihua took her grandson, who was safe, though frightened, from Xiaoyan's arms, she saw Lin Wei pinned beneath a huge rock, her left leg twisted at an awkward angle. She was covered in mud and blood, her face pale as a sheet. But seeing the child was safe, she forced a smile and said weakly to Liu Cuihua, "Auntie... the child... is fine..." Then, her vision went dark and she fainted.
"Miss Lin! Miss Lin!" Liu Cuihua hugged her grandson and looked at Lin Wei lying in the mud, tears streaming down her face, sobbing uncontrollably.
The rain was still falling, but it seemed to be easing a little. A faint light shone on the horizon.
Lin Wei was rushed to the rear for treatment. Her leg was severely injured, but fortunately, she survived.
The floodwaters receded, leaving the village devastated. But the people's hearts remained connected because of Lin Wei and her female soldiers. The simple service station was destroyed, but the belief that "there is no home without country" was deeply ingrained in the hearts of every child and every villager.
Lin Wei and her fellow female soldiers are like a fire that never dies. During the most difficult years, they used warmth and light to dispel hunger and cold; in times of crisis, they protected their homes and their hopes with their lives and blood. That fire, burning in their hearts, ignited the courage and confidence of their fellow villagers to rebuild their homes. Even in the fiercest storms, this fire will never go out, for it carries love, conveys warmth, and symbolizes a spirit of perseverance and selfless devotion that lives on in this land.
