Reborn Young Lady's Peerless Grace
Chapter 91 The Mystery of the Illness
Since that day when Su and Shen Yunlan spent a night in the study, she had not seen Shen Yunlan for several days. Thinking that it was because of the concubine, Su was filled with grief and anger, and fell ill on the sickbed.
Jing'er originally went to the kitchen to get food for Shen Wanqing. When passing by Wutong Courtyard, she heard Nanny Zhu instructing the servants to take good care of her in the next few days, saying that the lady was ill and could not stand the noise and needed to rest.
She quickly returned to Qingfeiyuan and said anxiously, "Miss, I heard that the lady is sick."
Shen Wanqing looked incredulous. "Wasn't he fine a few days ago? How come he's sick all of a sudden?"
"I heard what Madam Zhu said, and I think it's true."
Jing'er looked sincere. She certainly believed that her maid would not lie. However, Su had always been strong, and this illness seemed a little strange.
"Has the young lady returned home?"
Shen Wanqing thought about it and asked. She wondered if Shen Wanru was angry when she returned home. After all, she didn't have a good time in the Prince's Mansion, and she brought all the anger she suffered there back to the Marquis' Mansion.
Jing'er thought about it carefully, and said seriously: "The eldest lady hasn't returned home in the past few days."
"That's strange?"
Shen Wanqing couldn't figure out the reason for a moment, so she decided to go to Wutong Courtyard to take a look.
She stood outside the door of Wutong Courtyard with Jing'er and took a deep breath. She knew this would be a difficult conversation.
Su had always disliked her, believing her difficult birth meant she would never again be able to continue the family line. Shen Wanqing, in turn, had never experienced the tenderness and care of her mother. She slowly entered the courtyard with Jing'er in tow, gently pushing open the door. She saw Su lying on the bed, her face pale, her brow furrowed. Her face was filled with sorrow. This was no longer the Su she had seen a few days before; she looked completely different. In just a few days, she had become so ill.
Shen Wanqing felt distressed for a moment. No matter what, that was her mother who brought her into this world, and she couldn't just turn a blind eye to it.
"Mother."
Shen Wanqing's voice trembled slightly, and she didn't know how to start.
Hearing the voice, Su slowly opened her eyes. Seeing that it was Shen Wanqing, a hint of displeasure flashed in her eyes: "Why are you here?"
Shen Wanqing pretended not to notice the displeasure in her eyes, walked a few steps forward to the bedside, and said softly: "I heard that mother was ill, so I came to see you."
Hearing this, Su snorted coldly: "Are you here to laugh at me? You are just like your father, a heartless person."
This time, Shen Wanqing came with sincerity, without any perfunctory attitude. Her heart ached, but Shen Wanqing knew that this was not the time to argue.
Her voice was still gentle, with a look of heartache on her face, "Mother, I know you are angry, but your health is more important."
Su turned her head away, no longer looking at Shen Wanqing. Despite this, Shen Wanqing didn't leave. Instead, she stood there quietly, waiting for her mother to calm down. Her eyes fell on the furnishings in the room. Those exquisite porcelain and gorgeous curtains were all carefully selected by Su. She had always regarded herself as the mistress of the Hou Mansion and managed it in an orderly manner.
However, her father's behavior dealt a heavy blow to her dignity.
After a while, Su's emotions gradually calmed down. She turned her head and looked at Shen Wanqing who was still standing there, with a hint of complicated emotions in her eyes: "You are just like your father, you are here to irritate me."
Shen Wanqing shook her head: "Mother, I came here just to let you know that no matter what happens, I will stand by your side."
Hearing this, a hint of surprise flashed in Su's eyes. She didn't expect Shen Wanqing to say this. She knew in her heart how she had treated her in the past. It was a blessing that her daughter didn't hate her, and what did she just say?
Su's voice softened a little: "Do you really think so?"
Shen Wanqing nodded: "Yes, mother. I know you have never liked me, but I hope we can put aside the past grudges and start over."
Su was silent for a while, then sighed: "Wanqing, I know I have always been harsh on you, but I was forced to do so."
Shen Wanqing leaned over and held Su's hand, saying softly, "Mother, let the past be the past. We can start over."
Her voice was firm and gentle, making Su feel a long-lost warmth.
Shen Wanqing stayed in Su's room for a long time. They talked a lot, and Su gradually opened up his heart.
"Your father's mistress is a young and beautiful woman, who is in no way inferior to my younger self."
Her existence made the Su family feel an unprecedented threat.
"I always thought that as long as I did well enough, your father would change his mind." Su's voice was tinged with sadness, "But I was wrong. He never really loved me."
Shen Wanqing couldn't do anything to help except comfort Su: "Mother, Daddy is not everything in life. We still have a lot of things to do."
Su looked at Shen Wanqing with a hint of gratitude in her eyes: "Wanqing, thank you, you let me see hope."
Her words revealed her renewed understanding and gratitude towards her daughter, which made Shen Wanqing feel a little relieved.
"Mother, has the elder sister come back to see you?"
Su's beautiful eyebrows wrinkled slightly. "Perhaps because the prince can't leave her side, she has her own difficulties."
"Ah."
This made Shen Wanqing laugh. Shen Wanru went back home to see her sick mother. Could there be any difficulties? These were just excuses. Ever since she had gone back home to Su Shi after the polo match and had a quarrel with her, she might have been thinking about other things.
"Qing'er, last time Ru'er came home, she said the Crown Prince wanted to entrust General Du with some weapons forging project. I heard it was for a considerable sum of money."
Looking at her daughter who had always been unpopular, Su decided to tell her so that Du Zhijie wouldn't be implicated because he couldn't hand over all the weapons.
"Mother, is this news reliable?"
Shen Wanqing knew in her heart that this must be a trap set by the prince for Du Zhijie.
Su nodded weakly, "I don't think Tathagata would lie. After all, she is the only one who is always by the Crown Prince's side and knows the most about such confidential matters."
"As for why she told me this, it was because she was wronged during the polo match. She came home and cried to me, asking me to punish you."
Su was unusually easy to talk to today. She must have seen through human nature in the past few days. The daughter she had loved for more than ten years never returned home to see her when she heard that she was sick. And this daughter, who had never been liked by her since childhood, was guarding her bedside today.
Shen Wanqing suppressed the nervous expression on her face and said calmly, "Mother, just take good care of yourself. Thank you for telling me this today."
After Su fell asleep, Shen Wanqing left Wutong Courtyard. She now had more important things to do, which was to find Du Zhijie and see if there was anything she could help with.
