Chapter 424: A Difficult Decision (9)
Zhang Hao was torn between two opposing views. On the one hand, he knew the ancient book might be the key to escaping their current predicament; on the other, he worried that handing it over would lead to even more trouble. His brow furrowed, his eyes revealing a deep struggle, and his hands unconsciously clenched and unclenched.
Mo Ying noticed the confusion on Zhang Hao's face and asked in a low voice, "Zhang Hao, have you thought of any solution?" There was a hint of anxiety and expectation in his voice, and his eyes were fixed on Zhang Hao, hoping to get a glimmer of hope from him.
Zhang Hao shook his head slightly, still undecided about whether to reveal the secrets of the ancient book. His eyes swept across everyone's faces, seeing the same anxiety and confusion.
The woman said with a worried look on her face, "If we continue like this, it's not a solution. I don't know what they will do to us next." Her voice trembled slightly, and tears of fear flashed in her eyes. Her delicate body seemed even more vulnerable under this tremendous pressure.
Feng Wuhen pondered for a moment and said, "Zhang Hao, no matter what decision you make, we support you, but you must be cautious." His expression was serious and calm, and his eyes revealed firm trust, trying to give Zhang Hao some encouragement and support.
Just then, the leader reentered the tent, gazing at them coldly. His gaze, like the sharpness of a knife, sent shivers down their spines. "What have you considered? Don't refuse a toast and then drink a forfeit!" His voice was filled with impatience and threats, as if he was about to take even harsher action against them.
Zhang Hao took a deep breath and said, "I can tell you something, but you must promise to let us go." Although his voice was firm, the slightly trembling tone revealed his inner nervousness.
The leader sneered: "Tell me about it first. If it's valuable, I can consider it." There was disdain and suspicion on his face. He obviously didn't believe that Zhang Hao could provide any valuable information.
Zhang Hao hesitated for a moment, but finally decided to take the risk: "We found an ancient book in that place." His voice was very low, as if telling this secret took all his strength.
The leader's eyes lit up and he asked eagerly, "Ancient books? What kind of ancient books?" His eyes were instantly filled with greed and desire, and he couldn't wait to know more details.
Zhang Hao described the appearance and general contents of the ancient book, and the leader fell into deep thought. His fingers tapped lightly on the table, as if pondering the value and purpose of this ancient book.
"Hand over the ancient books, and I'll let you go," the leader said. He stared intently at Zhang Hao, trying to tell from his expression whether he was lying.
Zhang Hao looked at him warily: "Let us move away from here for a distance first, and I will give you the ancient book." He knew that he could not easily believe the other party's promise, and he had to strive for more protection for himself and his companions.
The leader's face darkened: "Don't push your luck!" His voice was full of anger, as if Zhang Hao's request had violated his bottom line.
The two sides were deadlocked, and the atmosphere became tense again. The entire tent was filled with an oppressive atmosphere, making it almost impossible to breathe.
Mo Ying couldn't help but say, "At worst, we can just fight them!" His voice was full of determination and courage, and his clenched fists showed that he was ready to fight.
Zhang Hao stopped him: "Don't be impulsive, think of another way." He knew that being impulsive would only put them in a more dangerous situation, and they had to remain calm to find a way out.
At this moment, there was a sudden commotion outside, and one of his men hurried in: "Chief, something bad has happened, there is an invasion!" His voice was full of panic and fear, and his face was as pale as paper.
The leader's face changed drastically. He had no time to care about Zhang Hao and the others and hurriedly left the tent.
Zhang Hao and others looked at each other, and a glimmer of hope ignited in their hearts.
"This may be our chance!" Feng Wuhen said.
"Let's escape while they are in confusion!" the woman said anxiously.
Zhang Hao nodded: "Everyone be careful, follow me!"
They quietly walked out of the tent and saw chaos in the camp, with soldiers running around and shouting one after another.
Zhang Hao led everyone to run towards the edge of the camp, avoiding the patrolling soldiers along the way.
However, just as they were about to escape from the camp, they were discovered by a soldier.
"Stop!" the soldier shouted.
Zhang Hao and others quickened their pace and rushed forward desperately.
The soldiers blew their horns, and more soldiers surrounded them...
