Chapter 28 Sect Exploration
I stared at Luo Chen's unwavering gaze, feeling a whirlwind of emotions swirling in my heart. On the one hand, I felt his persistence was bordering on unreasonable, like a stubborn child clinging to an idea they believe is right and refusing to let go. On the other hand, the stories he told of the past stirred within me an indescribable curiosity, as if an invisible hand were gently tickling my heart.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the cracks in the window like golden threads, gently casting a shadow on my face. I slowly rose and left the room, only to be surprised to find Luo Chen standing not far from the doorway. He looked slightly exhausted, as if he hadn't slept all night. His once handsome features were slightly haggard. Upon seeing me, his eyes lit up instantly, like twinkling stars in the night sky.
"Miaomiao, good morning." His voice was very soft, like the rustling of leaves in the breeze.
I didn't respond to him, pretending I hadn't seen him, and walked straight towards the sect's training grounds. Luo Chen didn't get angry either, but just followed me silently, the sound of his footsteps seeming like an echo of his persistence.
When we arrived at the training grounds, Senior Brother Chu Feng and Senior Sister Yun Yao were already practicing. Senior Brother Chu Feng's swordsmanship was sharp, each swing of his sword creating a whistling sound; Senior Sister Yun Yao's figure was lithe, like a dancing butterfly. When Senior Brother Chu Feng saw us approach, he stopped his sword and approached me.
"Su Xiao, I think we should find some elders or seniors in the sect to ask about you and Luo Chen. Maybe we can solve this mystery." Senior Brother Chu Feng looked at me sincerely, his eyes revealing a sense of steadiness and wisdom.
I tilted my head slightly, thought for a moment, and felt that this was indeed a feasible solution, so I nodded gently in agreement. Luo Chen also hurriedly said, "This is a good idea. Perhaps the seniors in the sect know something that we don't know."
So, the four of us went together to the residence of the sect's highly respected Elder Qingxuan. Along the way, Luo Chen's eyes kept drifting towards me, his eyes full of expectation, as if I was the sustenance of all his hopes.
We arrived at Elder Qingxuan's residence, a simple and peaceful cottage surrounded by a few lush bamboos, whose leaves rustled gently in the breeze. We knocked respectfully on the door, and Elder Qingxuan's steady and powerful voice echoed from inside: "Come in."
We cautiously entered the room and found Elder Qingxuan seated on a cushion, eyes closed, resting. His face was peaceful, the marks of time etched deep within it, yet imbued with the demeanor of a wise man. Upon seeing us enter, he slowly opened his eyes, his gaze like the depths of a lake, calm yet full of insight.
Senior Brother Chu Feng stepped forward, bowed respectfully, and said, "Elder, we came here to ask you something about Junior Sister Su Xiao and Luo Chen."
Elder Qingxuan's eyes swept lightly over Luo Chen and me, and he nodded slightly, motioning for us to sit down.
"Tell me what's going on?" Elder Qingxuan's voice echoed in the house like a huge bell.
I took a deep breath and told him everything in detail, how Luo Chen had said I was his fiancée, but I had no memory of it. As I spoke, my heart was filled with confusion and bewilderment, and my voice trembled slightly unconsciously.
After hearing this, Elder Qingxuan fell into deep thought. He folded his hands on his knees, frowning slightly. After a moment, he slowly said, "This is indeed a bit strange. Su Xiao, do you really have no memory of what happened before you came to Yunwu Peak?"
I shook my head firmly: "Elder, I really don't remember anything."
Elder Qingxuan turned his gaze to Luo Chen again: "Are you sure she is your fiancée?"
Luo Chen straightened his chest and answered with a firm look: "Elder, I am sure that I will not mistake Miaomiao."
Elder Qingxuan stood up and slowly paced the room. His steps were light, as if he were weighing something with each step. After a moment, he said, "In our sect's library, there's an ancient tome that might hold some clues. It records the past lives of many of our disciples. You might want to look there."
After respectfully thanking Elder Qingxuan, we headed towards the library.
Arriving at the library, a distinct scent of aged paper and ink greeted us, the scent of time. Tall bookshelves stood in rows, like silent guardians, filled with a wide variety of books. Some of the pages, yellowed, seemed to tell ancient stories. We began carefully searching among the rows of shelves for that ancient tome.
While searching, Luo Chen said to me, "Miaomiao, if you can find any clues, you will believe me." His voice was full of expectation and his eyes were shining with hope.
I didn't answer him, but instead concentrated on searching the bookshelf, my eyes quickly scanning the spines of the books, silently praying that I could find the key book as soon as possible.
Suddenly, Senior Sister Yunyao shouted excitedly, "Found it!"
We hurried over. Senior Sister Yunyao carefully placed the tome on the table, treating it like a rare treasure, and then gently opened it. However, the words on it were ancient and obscure, like mysterious runes. We looked at it for a long time but were still confused. Those words seemed like a code from another world, difficult to decipher.
Luo Chen frowned, looking confused and said, "I have never seen this text before. How should I interpret it?"
Just as we were worrying about these obscure characters, Senior Brother Chu Feng suddenly seemed to have an idea. His eyes lit up and he said, "We can go find Senior Brother Mo Xuan. He's quite knowledgeable about ancient characters."
So, we took the books to see Senior Brother Mo Xuan. Senior Brother Mo Xuan's residence was filled with a scholarly atmosphere, with various calligraphy works hanging on the walls. When Senior Brother Mo Xuan saw the books we brought, his eyes suddenly sparkled with excitement.
"This is a rare book." As he said this, he couldn't wait to take the book.
After we explained our purpose, Senior Brother Mo Xuan began to decipher the text with complete concentration. His eyes were focused, his fingers gently tracing the text, as if engaging in a silent conversation with the ancient text. After a long moment, he slowly raised his head.
"There's a similar situation mentioned here. There's a spell that can make a person lose specific memories, but this spell requires very strong magical power to support it, and after it's cast, some special traces will be left in the spiritual veins of the person being cast." Senior Brother Mo Xuan's voice was calm and steady, and every word he said was like a stone thrown into a lake, stirring up ripples in our hearts.
Hearing this news, Luo Chen hurriedly said: "Then let's check Su Xiao's spiritual veins quickly." There was a hint of urgency in his voice and his eyes were full of tension.
Senior Brother Mo Xuan nodded and began carefully examining my spiritual veins. Everyone gathered around, watching intently without blinking. After a moment, Senior Brother Mo Xuan gently shook his head.
"Junior Sister Su Xiao's spiritual vein did not find any such special traces." Senior Brother Mo Xuan's voice was very soft, but it hit our hearts like a heavy hammer.
This result plunged us into deep confusion. Luo Chen's face was filled with disappointment, and he muttered to himself, "Did I really make a mistake?" His eyes became dim, as if he had lost all hope.
I looked at his distraught expression, and I felt a little sorry for him. Then, Senior Brother Chu Feng suddenly said with great enthusiasm, "Perhaps there are other possibilities. We can't just give up like this."
After searching Elder Qingxuan's place and the library to no avail, my heart felt like a tangled mess, deeply troubled. Returning to my own residence, I saw Xiaozhu, who had been waiting on me. Xiaozhu was a thoughtful girl, having lived in the sect since she was a child. Like a lively little bird within the sect, she knew everything there was to know.
I gently called Xiaozhu to my side and asked in a soft voice, "Xiaozhu, have you ever heard about Brother Lingxiao and me?"
Xiao Zhu raised her head with a puzzled look on her face, her eyes full of confusion: "Miss, who is Brother Ling Xiao?"
My heart tightened, realizing that Xiaozhu might not know Luo Chen's courtesy name was Lingxiao. I quickly explained, "It was Luo Chen. He said he was my fiancé and told me a lot about our childhood, but I don't remember a thing."
Xiao Zhu's eyes suddenly widened, as if she had suddenly remembered something important. "Miss, I think I heard some of my former senior sisters mention something. They said that many years ago, there was a pair of children in the sect who were betrothed to each other. The boy was named Luo Chen, and the girl was named Su Miaomiao. The two children often played together when they were young and had a very good relationship. But then the boy's family moved away, and we haven't seen each other since."
My heart moved, like seeing a ray of light in the darkness, and I couldn't wait to ask, "So, what else do you know? For example, do we have any special tokens or agreements between us?"
Xiao Zhu tilted her head, her fingers gently twirling the ends of her hair, trying to recall the past. After a while, she said, "I'm not sure about this. I just occasionally heard those senior sisters talk about it. But, Miss, why do you suddenly want to know about these things? Haven't you always been indifferent to these past events?"
I sighed softly, my eyes filled with helplessness. "Luo Chen's appearance has left me very confused. I have no recollection of what he said, but he seems very convinced that I am his fiancée. I want to figure out what is going on."
Xiao Zhu looked at me with her gentle eyes and said softly, "Miss, maybe there is some misunderstanding. But if it is really as he said, then it can be regarded as a beautiful fate."
I shook my head, my confusion undiminished. "I'm still not sure if what he said is true or not. Xiaozhu, think about it carefully. Are there any other details?"
Xiao Zhu frowned, her eyes tightly shut, as if trying to squeeze out all the memories. Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and she said excitedly, "Miss, I remember now! I heard from the sisters that the boy once gave the girl a jade pendant. It seems to be an heirloom in their family and has special meaning."
I was shocked. A jade pendant? I had never seen one before. I quickly asked, "What does the jade pendant look like?"
Xiao Zhu tried to describe it: "I haven't seen it either. I only heard from my senior sisters that the jade pendant is a warm white color with some strange patterns engraved on it, like some ancient runes."
I fell into deep thought. If this jade pendant really existed, would it prove that what Luo Chen said was true? But I don't have such a jade pendant on me.
While I was thinking, Luo Chen walked in. He saw Xiao Zhu beside me and nodded slightly. Then he looked at me with a hint of expectation in his eyes.
"Miaomiao, I just heard Xiaozhu talking about the jade pendant. The jade pendant was indeed given to you by me. Do you really not remember it?" Luo Chen's voice trembled a little, and there was a hint of imperceptible sadness in his voice.
I looked at him and shook my head firmly: "I don't have this jade pendant on me, how can you explain this?"
Luo Chen's face turned pale, his lips trembling slightly as he murmured, "How is this possible? How could you not have it? Could it be that someone took it away?"
Xiao Zhu said from the side: "Master Luo Chen, maybe the young lady really has lost that memory, or maybe the jade pendant has been lost long ago."
Luo Chen clenched his fists, as if he had made a great determination, and a glimmer of hope rekindled in his eyes: "Miaomiao, I will definitely find evidence to prove that you are my fiancée. Even without the jade pendant, I believe you are the one I have been waiting for."
I looked into his determined eyes, and my confusion deepened. Was this man, who claimed to be my fiancé, truly in love or had he mistaken me for someone else? I needed more clues to solve this mystery.
Just as we were about to discuss this further, a melodious and rapid bell sound suddenly rang out from the sect. This bell sound echoed in every corner of the sect, signaling that the sect was in an emergency.
We looked at each other and immediately ran towards the direction where the bell came from, temporarily putting aside the search for my and Luo Chen's identities.
