Chapter 13: The village is looking for a replacement, and the beginning is difficult
At the quiet alley, a breeze blew past, stirring up a few fallen leaves. Dongfang Liuli turned to look at Lei Yi, a look of determination in her eyes: "Come with me, I know a place."
Lei Yi didn't hesitate for a moment, knowing he had no other choice. Dongfang Liuli led him on a rapid journey, crossing a rugged mountain road until they reached a secluded valley. Smoke curled from cooking fires, and within it lay a tranquil little village, seemingly isolated from the world.
"The people here are simple and honest, so we can hide from pursuit for the time being." Dongfang Liuli pointed at the village and said, "You need to find a suitable substitute as soon as possible, otherwise..."
She didn't say anything else, but Lei Yi understood her meaning. Li the Bully's influence was immense; if he were found, the consequences would be disastrous. Lei Yi nodded, and the two of them walked towards the village together.
At the entrance of the village, a burly man was working on ironwork, the clanging sound echoing through the valley. He was the village blacksmith, Liu the Blacksmith.
"Excuse me, big brother." Lei Yi stepped forward and asked, "We are from out of town and would like to ask you something."
Liu the Blacksmith looked Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli up and down, his eyes full of vigilance: "What are you asking?"
"It's like this," Lei Yi tried his best to appear harmless, "We want to find someone in the village, but we don't know..."
"I know most of the villagers," Liu the Blacksmith interrupted him gruffly. "Who are you looking for? Tell me."
"We want to find someone..." Lei Yi paused. He couldn't just say he wanted to find someone who looked like him. "Someone around our age and with a good figure..."
"Who are you?" Liu the Blacksmith asked cautiously, "Why are you asking about this?"
Lei Yi was about to explain when he saw a middle-aged man in a long gown holding a scroll approaching from a distance. He was the village teacher, Master Wu. When Master Wu saw Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli, he frowned slightly and stopped.
"Liu the Blacksmith," Master Wu said loudly, "these two men..."
When Master Wu saw Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli, his brows furrowed slightly and he stopped. He adjusted his glasses and his sharp gaze swept over the two of them, finally landing on their dusty shoes.
"Liu the Blacksmith," Master Wu said loudly, "these two strangers are acting suspiciously. I'm afraid they're not good people!"
His shout was like dropping a stone into a calm lake, instantly attracting the attention of the surrounding villagers. They all stopped what they were doing and looked over curiously.
When Liu the Blacksmith heard what Master Wu said, his expression turned serious. "Who are you? What do you want to do in our village?" He asked in a stern tone, clenching the hammer in his hand.
Lei Yi groaned bitterly. He had only intended to quietly find a replacement, but he had been mistaken for a villain. He took a deep breath, trying to remain calm, and explained, "Brother, you misunderstood. We..."
"Misunderstanding?" Master Wu sneered and interrupted him. "You are ragged and dusty, and you are obviously not decent people! And you dare to quibble!"
After hearing what Master Wu said, the surrounding villagers became wary when looking at Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli.
"We really came here..." Lei Yi wanted to explain, but was interrupted by Master Wu's impatient wave of his hand.
"That's enough! Stop your sweet talk! Our village is a peaceful place and we don't welcome outsiders like you! Leave now, or don't blame us for being rude!"
Lei Yi was speechless. He knew that it was useless to say anything now. Dongfang Liuli saw this and took a step forward. Just as she was about to speak, Lei Yi stopped her. He shook his head at her, signaling her not to be impulsive.
"Let's go!" Lei Yi said in a low voice, then pulled Dongfang Liuli and turned to leave.
"Stop!" Master Wu shouted sternly, "Who allowed you to leave?"
Lei Yi paused, his heart simmering with rage, yet he felt helpless. He knew it was not the right time to clash with the villagers, as this would only make matters worse.
"What should we do for you to believe us?" Lei Yi asked, suppressing his anger.
Master Wu sneered, "Unless you prove that you are not bad people, don't even think about leaving our village!"
Just as Lei Yi was struggling to prove his innocence, a scream suddenly rang out from the crowd: "It's him! It's him! He's here to steal things!"
Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli looked in the direction of the sound at the same time, and saw a fat, white-haired old woman pointing at Lei Yi and shouting at the top of her lungs.
"Widow Ma, what are you talking about?" Blacksmith Liu recognized the old woman and shouted.
"I'm not kidding! I saw him sneaking around the village with my own eyes. He definitely has bad intentions!" Widow Ma pointed at Lei Yi and said firmly, "He must be trying to steal my money!"
Lei Yi was stunned. He didn't even know this Widow Ma, let alone steal her money. He was about to explain when Widow Ma suddenly rushed in front of him, grabbed his collar, and screamed, "Catch the thief! Someone is trying to rob us!"
The sudden change caught Lei Yi off guard. Before he could react, he felt the villagers' eyes on him become even more hostile, as if he were some unforgivable sinner. And Widow Ma's cries still echoed through the village, like a fuse about to ignite a greater storm...
Widow Ma's shrill cries echoed across the village, cutting the already tense atmosphere like a sharp blade. The villagers already harbored resentment towards the two outsiders, and now, seeing Widow Ma's tears, they were even more convinced that Lei Yi was the thief.
"I said they don't look like good people! Look, the truth is revealed!" Master Wu pushed his glasses on the bridge of his nose, looking as if he had known this would happen.
"Catch him! Don't let him run away!" Someone in the crowd shouted, and the angry villagers immediately surrounded Lei Yi and Dongfang Liuli, their eyes filled with anger and vigilance.
"Ma'am, have you got the wrong person? We really don't mean to rob you!" Lei Yi tried to explain, but Widow Ma wouldn't listen. She grabbed Lei Yi's collar tightly and cried even louder, "It's him! I saw him sneaking around my house last night! He must be here to steal today!"
Dongfang Liuli was extremely anxious when she saw Lei Yi was unable to defend himself. She stepped forward and tried to pull Widow Ma away. "Madam, please calm down and listen to our explanation..."
"Who are you? Are you in the same group with him?" Widow Ma saw that Dongfang Liuli was also speaking for Lei Yi, and she insisted that the two were accomplices, and her eyes were full of hostility when she looked at Dongfang Liuli.
"We really..." Dongfang Liuli wanted to explain, but was roughly pushed aside by several villagers.
"Don't think you can bully others just because you have more people!" Dongfang Liuli has practiced martial arts for many years and has extraordinary skills, but facing the excited villagers, she couldn't take action. She could only watch Lei Yi being entangled by Ma Guafu.
"I really didn't mean to steal your things!" Lei Yi was almost unable to breathe after being caught by Widow Ma. He tried his best to explain, but in return he received even more ferocious looks and more vicious curses from the villagers.
"A thief is a thief! How dare you quibble!"
"Tie him up! Send him to the authorities!"
The villagers were becoming increasingly agitated, and were on the verge of resorting to violence against Lei Yi. Lei Yi's heart sank, knowing that today's incident would likely not end peacefully...
In the crowd, Liu the Blacksmith stared at the chaotic scene, his brow furrowed. While he doubted the identities of the two outsiders, Widow Ma's accusations were too absurd to convince him. He opened his mouth to say something, but was drowned out by the roars of the villagers around him.
As the sun sets, its afterglow casts a shadow over this remote village, yet it cannot dispel the gloom that hangs over everyone's hearts. Surrounded by the villagers, Lei Yi struggles helplessly, like a trapped animal, desperately awaiting his fate...
Lei Yi was roughly shoved and shoved by the villagers, stumbling all the way until he was locked up in a dilapidated woodshed. He sat dejectedly on a pile of straw, feeling a mixture of emotions. He had thought that finding a remote village would easily allow him to find a suitable replacement, but he hadn't expected such a misfortune.
Dongfang Liuli was also blocked outside by the villagers. She anxiously knocked on the door of the woodshed, but to no avail. The villagers were full of hostility towards them and would not listen to any explanation at all.
"Lei Yi, how are you? Did they hurt you?" Dongfang Liuli's voice was full of worry.
"I'm fine." Lei Yi's voice was a little low, "It's just our plan..."
He knew that now, let alone finding a replacement, even leaving the village safely was a problem. The villagers believed they were thieves and would not let them go easily even without evidence.
As night fell, the woodshed was completely dark, with only a few rays of moonlight filtering through the holes in the roof. Lei Yi sat in the darkness, listening to the villagers' whispers outside, feeling a growing weight on his heart.
He must find a way to get out of this predicament as soon as possible, otherwise things will become even more troublesome once he is sent to the government.
Just when Lei Yi felt desperate, he suddenly heard a burst of small footsteps. He raised his head alertly and looked in the direction of the sound.
In the dim moonlight, he saw a thin figure climbing in from the window of the woodshed. The figure was agile and nimble, obviously a martial artist.
"Who?" Lei Yi asked in a low voice.
The figure did not answer, but walked straight to Lei Yi and looked at him in the moonlight.
"Who are you?" Lei Yi asked again, his heart full of vigilance.
"My name is Chen Ergou." The figure finally spoke, his voice hoarse and low, revealing a hint of cynicism. "I heard that you got into trouble?"
Lei Yi looked at the young man named Chen Ergou in front of him, and a glimmer of hope suddenly rose in his heart. Although Chen Ergou looked frail, his eyes were very sharp, and he was also very skilled. Perhaps...
"Can you do me a favor?" Lei Yi asked tentatively.
Chen Ergou sneered, "Help you? Why should I help you?"
Lei Yi took a deep breath. He knew that if he wanted to convince Chen Ergou, he had to come up with enough chips.
"I can give you money." Lei Yi said, "A lot of money."
Chen Ergou seemed to be somewhat tempted by Lei Yi's proposal, but he did not agree immediately. Instead, he looked Lei Yi up and down, as if evaluating his value.
"What do you want me to do?" Chen Ergou asked with a hint of vigilance in his tone.
Lei Yi looked into Chen Ergou's eyes and said slowly: "I want you..."
