Collapse is actually the most feared thing in tunnel construction. It is a huge test for technology and engineers, and also requires high operational skills from workers.

This also meant that Wu Yongjie had to be present in person. In fact, he didn't have to be present, but he was worried. Some workers were even too stupid, so he needed to teach them how to operate safely. Although today's shield machines are very advanced, there is still no way to prevent dust mixed with mud and water from flowing and splashing onto the operators.
