The Mysterious Soldier of the Anti-Japanese War
Chapter 95 Escape from Ascension
In the darkness, the sounds of gunfire and shouting intertwined. Taking advantage of the lights going out, Lei Tao quickly used a secret technique to allow himself to see in the dark. He then gestured to the Li brothers, whose night vision had been enhanced by hunting in the mountains and forests since childhood and the use of a special herbal formula, to follow him. Lei Tao instructed the Li brothers to switch to semi-automatic drum-type crossbows and attack the Japanese troops in the dark. After repelling them, the three of them groped their way to the storage warehouse of the chemical weapons production base.
Lei Tao took a deep breath and said to the Li brothers, "You stay on guard outside the warehouse while I go in and plant the bomb." With that, he gripped his weapon tightly, crouched low, and carefully infiltrated the warehouse. Once inside, Lei Tao quickly scanned the surroundings, ensuring they were clear for the time being. He retrieved a 120mm thermite incendiary shell and a timed detonator from the Bagua gyroscope. He squatted down and gently placed the shell among the chemical weapon shells. He carefully connected the timed detonator to the shell, setting the detonation time for half an hour. Once he was done, Lei Tao stood up, double-checked the connections, and quickly walked out of the warehouse. He found the Li brothers, patted them on the shoulder, and said, "This base is about to explode! Retreat!" Lei Tao also retrieved several anti-infantry Broadsword mines and placed them in the corridor leading to the warehouse...
Lei Tao and his two companions quickly retreated along the same route they had come. Lei Tao walked in front, pausing periodically to listen and vigilantly observe any unusual movements. Li Shuiniu and Li Shuyang followed closely behind, their semi-automatic drum-type crossbows firmly grasped, their night vision scanning the darkness. When they reached the corridor where the Broadsword mines had been set, Lei Tao signaled the Li brothers to stop. Cautiously, he approached to check if the mines had been triggered. Once he confirmed they were safe, he waved them off to continue.
However, they hadn't gone far when they heard a clatter of footsteps and shouts in Japanese from behind. Apparently, the Japanese had bypassed the minefield and were on their way. Lei Tao's heart tightened, and he whispered, "Speed up! We can't get caught up in them!" They turned into a fork in the road. Lei Tao quickly pulled out some smoke bombs from the Bagua Gyro space and threw them behind him. The smoke instantly spread, obscuring the Japanese's vision. Seizing this opportunity, they rushed into a nearby passage.
A pungent odor filled the passage, and strange indicator lights flickered on the walls. Lei Tao knew they had to find an exit quickly, otherwise they would have nowhere to escape if the bomb exploded. Suddenly, a group of Japanese soldiers appeared up ahead. Lei Tao shouted, "Open fire!" The Li brothers immediately raised their crossbows and fired, with arrows raining down on the Japanese. Lei Tao then pulled out his Scorpion submachine gun from his space and fired fiercely at the enemy. The Japanese were caught off guard by the sudden attack, but they quickly organized a counterattack. Bullets whizzed through the passage, and Lei Tao and his men could only rely on the grooves in the wall as cover as they engaged in a fierce firefight with the Japanese. While firing, Lei Tao observed the surroundings, looking for an opportunity to break through. During the exchange of fire, Li Shuiniu's arm was grazed by a bullet, but he simply bandaged it and continued fighting.
Finally, Lei Tao spotted a vent on the side of the tunnel that appeared to lead outside. He quickly called out to the Li brothers, "Go through the vent!" Li Shuiniu crouched down and let Li Shuiyang step on his shoulders to climb up the vent. Once there, Li Shuiyang reached out and pulled Li Shuiniu up. Lei Tao was the last to climb up the vent. Just as they entered, a loud explosion erupted behind them. It turned out that the Broadsword mines they had set earlier had been triggered by the Japanese, causing heavy casualties among the Japanese.
Lei Tao, Li Shuiniu, and Li Shuyang struggled through the ventilation ducts of a Japanese chemical weapons production and testing base. The ducts were narrow, the air was blocked, the heat was unbearable, and breathing became difficult. They persevered, their only thought: escape the base before the bomb exploded.
They crawled through the pipe for an unknown amount of time. Just as they were about to run out of energy, they saw a light from the ventilation vent. Lei Tao pulled himself together and climbed out first. When he got up, he saw they were at the edge of the base. It was already early morning, with a hazy light. The surrounding woods were thick with fog, and they could hear insects chirping in the trees...
Lei Tao looked solemn, his eyes fixed on the Li brothers. He spoke quickly but clearly, "This bomb is extremely powerful, and its blast radius must be extraordinary. We're running out of time. Let's retreat to the other side of Beisha River!"
With that, the three men's eyes met, their understanding swiftly as they raced towards the Beisha River. Their footsteps pounded the ground in a rapid rhythm. They reached the river's edge and, without hesitation, leaped in. The water was icy cold, and they paddled vigorously, sending waves of water flying. Just as they reached the middle of the river, the timer in the base's warehouse reset to zero. Suddenly, a deafening roar erupted like thunder, and a massive fireball soared into the sky, swirling with thick smoke. Fueled by the thermite's powerful force, the explosion's blaze illuminated the previously dim night sky like daylight. The powerful shockwave sent a surge of several meters across the river, slamming them hard. Lei Tao shouted from the water, "Hold on! Swim to the other side!" They fought the current and the force of the water. The shockwave uprooted trees from the shore, sending debris flying into the air and back into the river. Finally, they reached the other side, clung to rocks and water plants, and climbed ashore. Once ashore, they collapsed exhausted, gasping for breath, looking back at the chemical weapons base reduced to a sea of burning ruins, with mixed emotions.
