The Mysterious Soldier of the Anti-Japanese War
Chapter 30: Sudden Gunshots Outside the Church
Lei Tao stood by the pool at the church estate, his heart filled with excitement and emotion. His recent discovery in the mysterious underground arsenal seemed to him like a glimpse into the dawn of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan. The mountains of weapons, equipment, and supplies were like a treasure trove of hope, injecting powerful momentum into the fight against the Japanese.
He took a deep breath and calmed himself. Lei Tao knew this secret couldn't be easily exposed, or the consequences would be disastrous. He once again cast his gaze at the pavilion model on the rockery in the middle of the pool. The small model seemed to be carrying a heavy burden.
Lei Tao slowly reached out and twisted the model as he had previously. With a gentle sound, the entrance to the underground armory began to slowly close. He watched intently as the entrance gradually disappeared from sight, feeling a mixture of worry and caution. He was worried about the mountains of weapons, equipment, and supplies piled inside—invaluable assets for the fight against the Japanese. His caution stemmed from the understanding that in these perilous times, any negligence could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Once the entrance was completely closed, Lei Tao carefully inspected the surroundings once more, ensuring there were no traces of his presence. He crouched down and carefully examined the grass and stones surrounding the pool, gently stroking any areas where traces might have been left, ensuring everything was restored to its original state. He knew this secret had to be kept tightly closed until the right time arrived.
Lei Tao stood there, pondering his next move. He wanted to find Lao Wang as soon as possible, tell him about this important discovery, and work together to discuss how to better utilize this batch of munitions to contribute to the anti-Japanese cause. Just then, a chaotic sound of footsteps came from outside the church. The footsteps approached from afar, like a herd of galloping wild horses, with a tense and rapid rhythm.
Then, "bang, bang, bang," three distinct Mauser pistol shots were heard, seemingly opening Pandora's box. Then, a fierce rain of gunfire followed, including the crisp crackle of the Type 38 rifle, the distinctive "da da" of the Crooked Neck light machine gun, the steady fire of the Zhongzheng rifle, and the dense fire of the Czech light machine gun.
Lei Tao's nerves instantly tensed, and he immediately crouched down, hiding behind a large rock beside the pool. His heart pounded, his mind racing as he considered the situation. He realized that the remaining Nationalist troops in Nanjing might be attacking the Japanese, or being surrounded by them.
Like a cautious cat, Lei Tao cautiously poked his head out from behind his cover, his eyes unblinking as he tried to take in the situation outside. He saw the once tranquil streets surrounding the solemn and ancient church had become chaotic, with figures swarming like a pool of turbid water. Thick gun smoke, like a gray veil, enveloped the area, making everything appear hazy and blurry.
The cold moonlight streamed down, illuminating the figures fighting fiercely. The Nationalist soldiers, clad in worn, dusty uniforms, wore faces etched with fatigue, yet more so, a resolute and unyielding spirit. Each one's eyes burned like a blazing flame, filled with hatred for the enemy and a determination to defend their homeland. Yet, despite this heroic bravery, facing the vastly superior numbers and equipment of the Japanese, they could only struggle to hold out.
Relying on their superior numbers and advanced weaponry, the Japanese troops advanced step by step, their steps firm and powerful, their mouths shouting incomprehensible slogans, their guns spitting out deadly flames, continuously harvesting lives.
Lei Tao clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his palms. His heartbeat accelerated rapidly, and anger surged in his heart like a volcanic eruption. The tragic scene before him made him unable to calm down. A strong sense of mission arose spontaneously - he could not just stand by and watch!
He couldn't help but think of the armory he'd stumbled upon earlier, crammed with a wide variety of weapons and ammunition. If this munitions could be properly utilized to support the Nationalist soldiers fighting so bravely, perhaps the tide of battle would be turned. However, as soon as this thought occurred to him, he immediately realized the enormous risks involved. If he accidentally revealed the location of the armory, not only would all his previous efforts be wasted, but it could also bring devastating disaster to the entire region. At this thought, Lei Tao's brow furrowed, his heart in a deep struggle...
