The Mysterious Soldier of the Anti-Japanese War
Chapter 3 Stealth Reconnaissance
Lei Tao stood in the alley, his heart filled with anger and a sense of mission. He knew he couldn't just sit there and wait for death, he had to find out what was going on around him, especially what was happening where the gunshots were heard.
He decided to go to the direction where the gunshots were heard to investigate the situation and see if he could rescue some people. Lei Tao took a deep breath, adjusted his state, and began to move cautiously.
He used the alleys off the street as cover, taking every step with extreme caution. His footsteps landed lightly on the ground, trying to make as little noise as possible. He sometimes bent forward, sometimes leaned against the wall, always vigilant.
As he approached a corner, Lei Tao paused. He listened carefully, confirming there was no unusual movement. Then he slowly poked half his head out and observed the situation on the other side of the corner with his peripheral vision. Once he was sure it was safe, he quickly passed the corner and continued forward.
When he came across a house, he would use its shadows to conceal himself. He moved through the shadows like a ghost. When he approached a wall, he would press his back against it, feeling its warmth, as if it gave him a sense of security.
As he advanced, Lei Tao constantly changed his tactics. Sometimes, he would crawl low, keeping his body close to the ground and moving slowly like a snake. This posture allowed him to pass through low obstacles without being detected. Sometimes, he would suddenly leap up, swiftly rushing across an open area, and then quickly find new cover to hide.
When passing a window, Lei Tao would stop and carefully observe the situation inside the house through the cracks in the window. If he found any traces of the enemy, he would immediately prepare for battle; if not, he would continue to move forward.
During the sneaking process, Lei Tao saw the people who were attacked by the Japanese army's gunfire. They fell to the ground in all directions, and the blood stained the streets red. Lei Tao's heart was filled with grief and indignation, and he hated the Japanese army's atrocities even more.
He then passed a large courtyard. As his eyes swept across it, the scene before him infuriated him to the core. A baby, still a child, was hung from a tree by a rope around its neck, a Type 38 bayonet piercing its body. Next to it lay the naked bodies of young women, clearly a mother and daughter. Lei Tao could hardly imagine the brutality of the slaughter they endured before their deaths.
Lei Tao clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his palms, his eyes burning with anger. He secretly vowed to make these Japanese soldiers pay a heavy price.
Continuing his cautious sneaking, he finally arrived at a building. He entered silently and quickly climbed the stairs. Every step was extremely cautious, constantly aware of his surroundings. After reaching the top floor, Lei Tao set up an early warning device at the stairwell, so that he would be able to detect any approaching enemies immediately.
Then, he came to the edge of the top floor of the building, lay down, and hid his body. From this position, he could clearly observe the battle between the Japanese army and the remnants of the National Security Army downstairs.
The gloomy sky seemed shrouded in a thick haze, oppressive and almost suffocating. Gun smoke lingered in the wind, its acrid odor blurring the view. The Japanese troops, like a pack of rabid wolves, clad in khaki uniforms and armed with Type 38 rifles, pressed forward. Their movements were perfectly timed, evident in their rigorous training. Their eyes were filled with coldness and cruelty, as if every life on this land were but a prey to their wanton slaughter.
The Japanese commander brandished his sword and roared orders. The soldiers quickly followed his orders, dividing into small groups and outflanking the remnants of the National Security Army from different directions. Japanese artillery fire roared relentlessly, shells raining down on the ruins surrounding the remnants, sending up clouds of black smoke and rubble. Shrapnel flew everywhere, emitting a sharp whistling sound. The once bustling streets were now riddled with holes, the ruins crumbling under the impact of the artillery fire. Broken bricks and tiles lay scattered on the ground, stained dark red with blood.
The remnants of the National Security Army, though few in number, were as impenetrable as a fortress made of steel. They wore tattered uniforms, their faces stained with dust and blood, but the resolve and fearlessness in their eyes illuminated the dark battlefield like a burning flame.
They huddled together, clinging to the rubble of the ruins, stubbornly resisting the Japanese attack. Every movement was filled with strength and courage. Though their weapons were crude, their accuracy remained undiminished. They calmly aimed at the Japanese, each bullet laced with hatred and determination. Whenever a Japanese soldier approached, they unhesitatingly threw grenades, the explosions echoing across the battlefield like a roar of anger against the invaders.
Next to a collapsed house, a young, remnant soldier lay, his face still childish, but his eyes brimming with courage. He gripped his rifle tightly, firing relentlessly at the Japanese, his resolute gaze telling the enemy he would never retreat. Beside him, an old soldier shouted encouragement, telling him not to be afraid and to fight bravely. Their figures seemed so small, yet so towering, amidst the flames of war.
The atmosphere on the battlefield was tense and tragic. Blood stained the ground, and corpses lay scattered across the ground. The wind howled, as if lamenting the brutal battle. Lei Tao's heart was deeply moved. He knew he could no longer sit idly by. He had to find a way to help these brave remnants of the National Security Army and deal a heavy blow to the Japanese army.
