The Mysterious Soldier of the Anti-Japanese War

Chapter 14 Lei Tao sets an ambush

After leaving the artillery position, Lei Tao headed toward the path the Japanese search team would take to reach Toudao Ridge. He reached a fork in the mountainside, a difficult pass ideal for an ambush. He paused to catch his breath, surveying the terrain and assessing the advantages and disadvantages of each position.

After determining the ambush location, Lei Tao pulled several grenades from his backpack and set up a minefield. He parted the brush and placed the grenades in a concealed area, camouflaging them with branches and leaves. He carefully manipulated them to avoid detection, while keeping a close eye on his surroundings. His mind was tense and focused, hoping the grenades would distract the Japanese, buying time and safety for the artillery position and his comrades. Although he knew it was a dangerous gamble, he remained steadfast.

After setting the minefield, Lei Tao searched for a blocking position. Crouching through the forest, he found a rocky outcrop, crouched close, and surveyed the area. He felt the position was ideal, offering a good view of the road ahead and some cover. He set up his position, retrieved his Type 38 rifle from the Bagua gyroscope, inspected it, loaded it with ammunition, and set it aside for use.

At that moment, the old monkey from the cave where the howitzer had been discovered reappeared, waving an old-fashioned triangular military flag that Lei Tao recognized as a Ming Dynasty standard. The old monkey's eyes were eager, as if he wanted to lead him somewhere. Lei Tao was puzzled and surprised. Knowing he had the important task of deflecting the Japanese troops, he couldn't leave. Yet, the military flag and the old monkey's appearance piqued his curiosity, and he tore into a conflict. He tightened his grip on his rifle, his heart pounding as he contemplated the various dangers and opportunities. Time passed, and he estimated the Japanese would arrive in about an hour. Finally, curiosity won out.

Lei Tao stood up, moving slowly and cautiously, rifle in hand, following behind the old monkey. They entered the depths of the forest, where tall, thick trees intertwined their branches, obscuring the moonlight and creating a dark, eerie atmosphere. Though frightened, Lei Tao remained vigilant, observing his surroundings, listening for sounds, and calculating strategies for dealing with danger.

His footsteps were slow and cautious, as if he feared disturbing the slumbering forest. Yet, even with such caution, each step still produced a subtle sound. In the utter silence of the forest, the sound seemed especially abrupt and distinct, like ripples on a still lake, spreading outward.

As they continued forward, they gradually entered deeper into the forest. Here, the trees were tall and sturdy, towering over the ground. Their lush branches and leaves intertwined, forming a pitch-black canopy in the darkness, completely obscuring the faint moonlight. The environment became even darker and more eerie, like a dark abyss, and a terrifying atmosphere permeated the air. Lei Tao did not retreat. He gripped his weapon tightly and resolutely followed the old monkey forward, praying for a successful adventure.

Lei Tao was nervous with every step he took, not knowing what he would encounter, but he knew he had to remain vigilant. He kept his eyes on his surroundings, his ears alert for any subtle sounds, and thought about how to deal with danger as he walked.

The old monkey led Lei Tao to a hidden cemetery. Moonlight shone on the ancient tombstones, creating a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. Lei Tao's heartbeat quickened, and he surveyed his surroundings warily, gripping his rifle even tighter.

In a cave near the cemetery, Lei Tao discovered some old-fashioned cold weapons. Rusted swords and mottled spears seemed to tell stories of the past. However, what surprised Lei Tao most was the discovery of bows and crossbows and arrows. These crossbows were well-made and, though somewhat worn, still exuded a sense of majesty.

Surprisingly, there's a uniquely shaped, exquisitely crafted, semi-automatic, repeating drum crossbow! This crossbow emanates a mysterious and alluring glow, as if telling of the countless fierce battles it's experienced.

Lei Tao cautiously approached and gently picked up the semi-automatic drum-type crossbow and its accompanying arrows. He carefully examined both items with a focused and sharp gaze. After a thorough inspection, Lei Tao was pleasantly surprised to find that despite the vicissitudes of time, the crossbow was still intact and functioning normally.

This unexpected surprise instantly filled Lei Tao's heart with joy. He knew full well that in the upcoming battle, fraught with uncertainty and danger, such a powerful weapon would likely be the deciding factor in victory or defeat. Without hesitation, Lei Tao decisively picked up the semi-automatic drum crossbow, selected a hundred or so incredibly sharp arrows, and quickly placed them into the Bagua Gyro he carried with him, ready for use in case of emergency.

Afterward, Lei Tao quickly returned to his previous blocking position. He began meticulously camouflaging himself. Lei Tao gathered branches and leaves and carefully wove them together to create a simple camouflage suit. He gently draped the suit over himself and slowly lowered himself to the ground, adjusting his position to ensure he was completely hidden from the surroundings. He carefully observed the surrounding terrain and selected an optimal hiding position, allowing him to observe the Japanese army's movements while remaining relatively undetectable.

Lei Tao lay there quietly, breathing steadily and evenly, his heart filled with tension and anticipation. He knew that the Japanese army could appear at any time, and he had to be fully prepared to deal a heavy blow to the Japanese army.
