Chapter 254: The Horadric Brotherhood
"Excuse me, are you from the Horadric clan?"
As soon as Wu Ye finished speaking, a look of surprise appeared on the man's face.
He looked Wu Ye over carefully, as if trying to read something from his eyes. After a long moment, he slowly nodded. "Yes, I am a member of the Horadric clan. But how did you know this? You know, this space has been sealed for who knows how many years. The outside world's memory of the Horadric clan is probably already fuzzy."
Upon hearing this, Wu Ye secretly felt lucky that he had guessed correctly.
He smiled and explained, "Actually, I'm from Khanduras, now the city of Rogue. I'm here to find you, commissioned by your clansman, Deckard Cain. So when I saw the Horadric Brotherhood crest printed on your mage robe, I guessed you were from the Brotherhood."
After hearing this, the man showed an expression of sudden enlightenment.
He put away his staff and his tone became much gentler. "I see, Deckard Cain? There was indeed a lineage with a man by that name who was in charge of other things outside. Please forgive my previous rudeness. Welcome to the territory of the Horadric clan. I am the guardian here, and my name is Carlos."
Carlos' tone was apologetic, realizing that he might have been a bit too nervous. He apologized to Wu Ye and Hai Li and invited them to rest at the Horadric Brotherhood's current residence.
Wu Ye and Haili gladly accepted Carlos' invitation.
They followed Carlos through the mysterious canyon and came to a hidden village hidden in the mountains.
The village wasn't large, but its layout was exquisite. Every house seemed to be carved with magic, emitting a faint fluorescent light. The villagers wore uniform clothing, but when they saw Wu Ye and his group approach, they all showed a wary expression.
Carlos led Wu Ye and Haley through the narrow and winding paths of the village. Although the residents along the way were wary at first, after Carlos' brief explanation, they all cast curious and friendly glances at them.
They chatted in low voices, and occasionally a child would peek through the crack in the door, their eyes wide open as they watched the two guests from afar. Wu Ye and Hai Li could sense that, despite the years that had isolated the Horadric Brotherhood from the outside world, their curiosity and yearning for the outside world still burned brightly in their hearts.
"We haven't welcomed outsiders for a long time." Carlos' voice was filled with emotion.
"Since that disaster, we've chosen to isolate ourselves in order to protect the Horadric knowledge and secrets from demonic invasion. But this also means we've lost contact with the outside world and know nothing about what's happening out there."
Wu Ye nodded, a complex emotion welling up in his heart.
He knew the Horadric Brotherhood's choice was driven by a commitment to justice, but he couldn't help but lament the loneliness and sacrifice. "I understand your struggles, but please believe that the outside world, while fraught with danger, is also filled with hope. I've come here hoping to find you and join us in fighting the demons that threaten Sanctuary."
Carlos' eyes flashed with approval when he heard this. "Deckard Cain is a wise man. He must have chosen you as his messenger for a reason. I believe your arrival will bring us new hope."
As they were talking, the three of them had arrived at an exquisite cottage located in the center of the village, surrounded by lush trees. Before arriving, Wu Ye had thought that the Horadric people should live in the desert, but he did not expect that this area was full of lush forests.
Carlos stopped and said to Wu Ye and Haili with a smile, "This is my home in the village. Although it is simple, please allow me to do my best to be a good host."
Wu Ye and Haili hurriedly thanked him and followed Carlos into the house.
The room was warm and elegant. Murals depicting Horadric history hung on the walls, and the bookshelves were filled with yellowed ancient books and scrolls. The air was filled with a faint scent of magic. Carlos invited them to sit down and then personally brewed them a unique Horadric herbal tea. The aroma of the tea was refreshing and invigorating.
"Come, try our tea first. This is the herb I planted myself." Carlos said as he handed the teacup to Wu Ye and Haley.
Wu Ye took the teacup and took a sip. He felt the tea aroma was sweet and refreshing, as if it could wash away the fatigue of the journey.
"Really good tea, thank you, Brother Carlos."
Hayley was also full of praise. She looked at Carlos with a glint of curiosity in her eyes. "Uncle Carlos, can you tell us about the life of the Horadric Brotherhood over the years? We really want to know how you have persisted in this forgotten land."
Carlos smiled slightly, his eyes deepening. "Actually, our lives aren't as dull as the outside world imagines. The Horadric Brotherhood inherits ancient magic and knowledge, and we're dedicated to researching how to better protect Sanctuary and combat demonic invasions. Although we've lost contact with the outside world, we've never stopped learning and exploring."
Carlos's expression grew serious at this point. "However, in recent years, we've sensed the gradual awakening of an evil force from the depths of Hell. This force is stronger than ever before, and it seems to be seeking a way to break through the seal and invade Sanctuary once again. While our power is limited, the Horadric Brotherhood will not sit idly by."
Wu Ye's heart raced upon hearing this. He knew full well that the evil force Carlos spoke of was most likely connected to Diablo. Ever since Diablo rescued Baal, who then fled Sanctuary and returned to Hell, Sanctuary had never been at peace. Under Diablo's control, Prince Aidan had committed countless crimes, resulting in the deaths of countless innocent people. Thinking of this, Wu Ye clenched his fists, a flicker of determination in his eyes.
"Uncle Carlos, Deckard Cain told me that the Horadric Brotherhood is the only force capable of fighting alongside us. I hope we can work together to protect Sanctuary."
Upon hearing this, Carlos' eyes flashed with surprise and relief. "Wu Ye, I'm moved by your courage and determination. The Horadric Brotherhood is willing to fight alongside you against Hell. However, before that, we need to know one thing: whether this space can be reconnected to the outside world."
Haili nodded and added, "Indeed, my master and I ended up here by chance. I wonder if we can reconnect with the outside world."
After all, Wu Ye had persuaded her to go back before. What if she couldn't go back?
Carlos nodded in agreement, then he stood up, walked to the bookshelf, and took down a thick ancient book.
"This ancient tome records the wisdom and experience of the Horadric Brotherhood over the generations, and may provide us with some clues. Furthermore, a new evil force is resurfacing in the place where Lady Tal Rasha once sealed Baal. We may need to eliminate this threat before we can proceed with the things we just discussed."
Wu Ye nodded. He understood what Carlos was talking about. The Tomb of Tal Rasha was now guarded by Duriel, the Lord of Maggots. But one thing Wu Ye couldn't understand was why Duriel was allowed to guard a tomb that held no secrets. Was there something hidden within?
Over the next few days, Wu Ye, Hailey, and Carlos immersed themselves in the ancient texts and lore of the Horadric Brotherhood, searching for ways to reconnect with the outside world. They discussed various strategies, and Carlos took them on a tour of every corner of the village, explaining the history and heritage of the Horadric Brotherhood and giving them a deeper understanding and connection to this land.
