Black Hearted Mage
Chapter 11 Magic Apprentice 4
Nearly five months of a long winter had passed. With the melting snow and ice, the magician group that had gone to Icecrown Mountains returned, along with five gray-skinned ogres. Three of the five ogres were tall and strong adults, and two were on the verge of adulthood. They exuded a powerful aura that filled Kaisus with awe.
The five ogres wore fur robes made from the snow-white pelts of direwolves. Only the fur of direwolves and frost bears could withstand the polar cold. These furs looked incredibly thick, gleaming with an icy gleam, as if they could withstand any cold.
"Little guy, this is the wolf skin I promised you. Since this one is a little damaged, I'm giving you three!"
Melissa's voice echoed through the crowd. Scars marked her face and hands, but her eyes were filled with determination and confidence. Ogres have a strong ability to heal themselves; these wounds weren't too deep and would heal in a few months. She held out three snow-white wolf pelts, each stained with dark red blood, making them particularly striking.
“Melissa, thank you so much!”
Caesars said this with some excitement. He carefully took the three wolf skins, a trace of gratitude in his eyes. He knew what these wolf skins meant to him. They would not only help him survive the cold winter, but also bring him more opportunities.
"You're welcome. The deal between us is done. If you need anything else, you can come to me again."
Melissa smiled slightly, a hint of pride etched in her smile. She knew the wolf pelts in her hands were worth a fortune, and if it weren't for Caesar's previous help, she wouldn't have easily given them to him.
Caesars nodded, knowing that there was something behind Melissa's words.
"Melissa, thank you so much. I'll definitely come back to you if I need any help."
Caesars spoke sincerely as he stored the three wolf pelts in his storage ring. His heart was filled with anticipation for the future, hoping these pelts would bring him good fortune. He planned to keep one pelt for himself and send the other two back home. Blackrock City was also very cold in the winter, and his grandfather and his father needed furs to keep warm.
"No need to thank me. Once you become a magician, you'll naturally understand that you too need to defend our tribe against the direwolves' attacks. This is also one of the magician's tasks at the Northland Tower, and no magician can escape it. And when you become a formal magician, you'll receive a complete and intact wolf skin!"
Hearing this, Caesars couldn't help but frown: "How long will it take?" he wondered to himself.
In fact, during this winter, Caesars had read an atlas on the continent's geography and had gained some understanding of the ferocious dire wolves and the eternally frozen Icecrown Mountains. Now, he was thinking about how to go to the Icecrown Mountains as soon as possible.
Melissa seemed to see what Caesars was thinking. She smiled and comforted him, "Don't worry. You're a smart little fellow. I believe you'll become a magician faster than other magic apprentices!"
"I've only just learned meditation. It will take me at least ten years to become a magician. I think I should hurry back and continue meditating. Maybe this way I can realize my wish of going to the Icecrown Mountains sooner."
Caesars waved goodbye to Melissa, then walked briskly towards the library tower not far away.
"Melissa, he said he's learned how to meditate. Oh my God, it's only been one winter!"
The old ogre, Trum, cried out in surprise. He immediately realized his mistake and looked around nervously. Fortunately, the magicians had left, otherwise his cry might have caused unnecessary trouble.
Trum lowered his voice and warned sternly, "This matter must not be spread! If it offends Kandel, it's fine, but if it angers old Roman in the library tower, it will be disastrous!"
When they heard Old Roman's name, the faces of several ogres tightened and they nodded to show that they understood.
The old ogre, Trum, knew that while Kandel's alchemy was powerful, his magical combat power was relatively weak. However, unlike Kandel, old Roman's magical combat power was extremely terrifying.
According to records from the ogre tribe, Old Roman once slew a vast number of direwolves and giant frost bears at once, an astonishing achievement. For over eight hundred years, despite the remarkable feats of other members of the tower, none had ever surpassed Old Roman's record. Indeed, several other ogres knew of Old Roman's exploits, and the entire ogre tribe held him in high esteem.
"Kid, stop meditating and pack your things. We're leaving for the Violet Alliance tomorrow!"
Old Roman was going to the Violet Alliance to explore the ruins. He was worried about leaving Caesars in the North Tower, so he planned to take him with him.
"Teacher, will you take me on an adventure too?"
Caesars was a little excited. He didn't expect that old Roman would take him with him.
"Yes, we'll set off early tomorrow morning!"
"Teacher, will we pass by Black Stone City?
"Yes, Black Rock City is the only way!"
"Can I go home for a minute? It'll only take a few minutes!"
The reward Caesars received from the tower was three hundred gold coins and twenty high-level magic crystals. Adding the gold coins he had saved up, he had almost six hundred gold coins.
"Okay, you want to take the gold coins home?"
"Gold coins are one reason. Melissa gave me three direwolf pelts today, and I want to keep two at home. My father has no right leg, and my grandfather has no left arm. They probably won't be able to buy much wood for heating, and the winter in Blackrock City is very harsh!"
Caesars was a little happy because he could send some gold coins home and the wolf skin as well.
"We'll give you half an hour in Blackrock City, so we have to leave early. We're traveling with other magicians this time, and you can't let them know where your home is. You must remember this!"
"Teacher, why is this?
"In order to protect your family, last time someone wanted to kill you, they didn't mind killing your family as well. You must remember this!"
"Teacher, I understand!"
Kaisas suddenly realized a terrible truth - the North Tower was a place where people were eaten without leaving any bones! Garlon had no grudge against him, but he was determined to kill him.
Old Roman had told him why Garlon wanted to kill him: Garlon was eyeing Kandel's alchemy, and if he could kill everyone else in the alchemy tower, he would become the Grand Alchemist's sole disciple. This reason sounded absurd, but it was the simplest, most brutal, and most effective method.
The Northland Tower generally didn't intervene in the deaths of apprentice wizards. Caesars wasn't even an apprentice at the time, so the most they'd have to pay was a few gold coins. Only when a full-fledged wizard died would the Tower investigate. This was the Tower's unique educational method, a cruel rule of survival. They aimed to cultivate stronger wizards, wizards who could adapt to any challenge.
The next morning, a magnificent carriage quietly departed from the Northland Tower. It was fitted with magic steel wheels and pulled by six majestic black horses. The carriage was crafted from a precious reddish wood coated with a waterproof wax. The interior was carpeted with thick animal hides, and the walls were painted with mysterious magic patterns and adorned with exquisite gold ornaments.
Caesars had never seen such a large and luxurious carriage. It was more than three times larger than his family's shabby carriage.
"Teacher, even the carriages of the nobles are not this big, right?"
"This is a carriage belonging to a great nobleman. I was originally an earl, a powerful nobleman with a fiefdom. But now I have left the title to my descendants. The carriage is my own, and the driver is also my man."
"Teacher, you are a noble lord! Where is your home?"
The young Caesar opened his eyes wide and looked at old Roman in surprise.
"Don't be so surprised. My home is in Huofeng City, the capital of the Roland Empire. But my children and grandchildren are all dead, and my current family members are their descendants!"
"Were they also killed?"
"No, he died of exhaustion!"
"No way? Teacher, how old are you?"
"I'm almost a thousand years old!"
"Oh my god!"
Caesars was muttering in his heart that his teacher was a thousand-year-old monster.
"How did you learn your magic theory? Because magic elements add vitality to life, life span will naturally be longer!"
"Teacher, I know this magical theory. A great magician can live for over a thousand years. I'm just sighing!"
The carriage sped southward, remarkably smoothly. Old Roman began to teach Caesar the principles of survival, based on his own personal experiences. He hoped his students would learn how to survive, especially in this cruel world where people are eaten without leaving any bones.
Along the way, Old Roman recounted the various dangers he encountered from his days as a magic apprentice to becoming a full-fledged magician. Back in the Northland Tower, he had to be wary of other apprentices. After becoming a full-fledged magician, Old Roman began his travels and adventures, needing to be wary of those outside the tower with ill intentions.
Caesars also gradually accepted these survival rules imperceptibly. Because in the eyes of those evildoers in the outside world, magicians are just a pile of walking gold coins.
Before sunset, the luxurious carriage arrived outside Blackrock City. Caesars was now somewhat envious of this large carriage. His family's shabby carriage had taken two days to reach the Northland Tower, stopping at night to rest. Old Roman's carriage was not only comfortable, but also fast and stable, reaching Blackrock City in a single day.
"Boy, my carriage won't go into the city. I'll wait for you here for half an hour!"
"I understand, teacher!
The carriage stopped in front of the Blackrock City gate. The driver opened the folding ladder and prepared to give the horses water, grass, and concentrated feed. Caesars walked down the ladder and ran towards the city gate.
Blackrock City is a small town with the best access to the Blackrock Mountains. It was originally a supply station built by the Northland Tower. As the number of outsiders continued to increase, it gradually became a small town.
The small figure of Caesar was running. His home was not far from the city gate, near the Blackstone Tavern.
"Wow, the snake keeper from the Northland Tower is back!"
A middle-aged man, dressed in leather armor and staggering as he walked, had just emerged from the tavern. Through his sleepy, drunken eyes, stained with eye mucus, he recognized Caesars immediately.
“Uncle Tom, you haven’t gone into Black Rock Mountain to hunt yet?
"It's still too cold. It's not the right time to collect herbs or capture monsters yet. Let's go into the mountains in a few days!"
"Uncle Tom, let's talk later. I'm going home first!"
Tom was an alcoholic, or so Caesars thought. But he was a good hunter, and if he caught a small black snake, he would sometimes sell it to old Ludwig for a small sum.
"Kid, run slower, there's no dinner if you go home now!"
In the blink of an eye, the little figure ran to his own small stone courtyard. The stone courtyard looked a little shabby, but it was the place that Caesars missed the most. He had returned to this place countless times in his dreams.
The shabby wooden gate was open, and two figures with incomplete limbs were sitting in the yard, seemingly chatting. They were wearing tattered linen robes, which looked a bit bloated, as if they were wearing torn leather robes underneath.
"Grandfather, Father, I'm back!"
"Why did you come back here, you bastard? And you stole other people's clothes!"
Old Ludwig had a look of joy on his face, but when he saw the expensive robes on Caesars, his weather-beaten face became full of worry.
"Grandfather, don't talk nonsense. This little robe was given to me by my teacher. Let's go inside and talk. I have something good for you!"
Caesars looked at the courtyard gate, ran over to close the broken wooden door, inserted the bolt, and dragged the two of them into the house.
"You little bastard, teacher, have you become a magic apprentice?"
As soon as they entered the stone house, old Ludwig closed the wooden door and asked anxiously.
"Of course, you are not allowed to tell anyone about this. The teacher has already warned you!"
"Little bastard, we all understand these things, no need for you to tell us more! How did you get back?"
"I came here with my teacher. I only have half an hour, as our carriage needs to set off again soon. I got some goodies: two direwolf hides. You can make them into warm robes, which you'd better wear underneath them. I also have two hundred gold coins. Save them for yourself and replace the broken doors and windows that are leaking air!"
Caesars pulled something out of his storage ring, and the father and son beside him were stunned. Caesars already had a storage ring. Looking at the bloodstained snow-white wolfskin and the small pile of golden coins, old Ludwig and his son were moved to tears.
"Why are you crying now? Hide the gold coins and wolf skin first, and then you can cry slowly after I leave. You don't have to worry about me, I have the golden-eyed black demon snake now!"
Caesar's nose felt sore, but he managed to hold it in. He changed the subject and took out a squirming linen bag.
"Don't take it out, you bastard! Don't let it get frozen!"
Little Ludwig was a little scared, and Old Ludwig was equally terrified. The Golden-Eyed Black Demon Snake was a high-level demon beast, more venomous and aggressive than ordinary black demon snakes.
