My humble days in ancient times

Chapter 53 Catching Ghosts at Night

Two days later, the village head came to Xu Ruyi with the land deed, handed it to her solemnly, and said, "It's finally done. Ruyi, you must keep it well. This is an important item."

Xu Ruyi smiled sweetly, "Thank you, Uncle Village Chief, for your trouble."

The village head waved his hand generously and said, "Why are you being so polite to me?" Xu Ruyi said again, "Uncle village head, I want to build a house on the wasteland. I would like to ask for your help when the time comes."

When the village head heard this, he immediately perked up, straightened his back and said, "When do you plan to start building it? I'll help you see it through. I guarantee that it will be done properly for you."

Without hesitation, Xu Ruyi said, "The sooner the better. The sooner it's built, the sooner I can feel at ease."

The village head put his hand on his chin and thought for a while, then said, "Okay, I have an idea."

Since Han Jun's family is currently busy building a house, many kind-hearted people in the village have gone to help, including the few bricklayers in the village. As a result, the village is currently short of manpower.

After returning, the head of the village hurried to find the village bricklayer Wang Youliang.

It was midday, the sun high in the sky. Wang Youliang was just about to lie down and take a nap to relieve the fatigue of the day when he heard the familiar voice of the village headman outside the door: "Is Youliang home?"

"I'm at home, I'm at home. It's the village head, right? Come in quickly." Wang Youliang responded quickly.

As soon as the village head entered, he saw Wang Youliang sitting on the bed and said apologetically, "Oh, are you asleep?"

Wang Youliang quickly waved his hand and said, "No, I was just about to lie down."

After the village head sat down, he asked directly, "Is Han Jun's house almost finished? Miss Xu also wants to build a house and is waiting for someone to hire her."

Wang Youliang replied, "It's just a matter of the past few days. I'll ask everyone to work harder and move faster."

The village head thought for a moment and said, "Okay, that's it. As soon as that's finished, we'll start work here immediately."

After the village head left, he met Xu Ruyi on the bumpy road. Xu Ruyi said with a worried look on his face, "Uncle village head, I've thought about it and decided that you could help me buy some bricks first."

After hearing this, the village head thought for a moment with his hand on his chin, and then he thought it was okay, so he agreed readily.

The next day, the village head rode Xu Qinghe's donkey cart, rattling all the way to the brick factory in the county town. After a heated haggling session with the factory workers, he finally placed an order for a batch of bricks.

The bricks sent from the brick factory were naturally placed on the wasteland one after another.

Xu Ruyi looked at the piles of bricks and said to Xu Qinghe, "Who will watch over the bricks tonight? We can't leave them unattended."

Xu Qinghe frowned and thought for a while before saying, "If not, let grandpa and grandma help look after him for a few days."

In the evening, Xu Dafu and Li came slowly over carrying an old wooden bed with a slightly worn tent hanging on it.

As Li walked, she muttered, "Why don't you just stay alone? I want to go back to sleep. This empty wasteland is pitch black, and I'm not used to sleeping."

Xu Dafu shook his head firmly and said, "Although I'm an old man, I'm still feeling terrified being here alone. You should stay and keep me company!"

Li got on the bed helplessly, muttering, "Go to sleep quickly, or else someone might come and steal bricks in the middle of the night and you won't even know."

Xu Dafu also lay down and said, "That's impossible. We are all from the same village. Could it be that someone is so bold and shameless as to do such a sneaky thing?"

Li turned around and said impatiently, "Go to sleep, go to sleep, I hope there are no thieves."

It was midnight, and everything was shrouded in a thick, inky darkness. Without a trace of moonlight, it was pitch black, unable to see one's hand in front of one's face.

Li was sleeping soundly when she heard a slight noise. She was startled and sat up. She shouted in a trembling voice, "Who is it? What are you doing sneaking around?"

Xu Dafu was also awakened from his sleep by Li's shouting. He asked in panic, "What's wrong? What's wrong? What happened?"

Li said with lingering fear, "Why do I feel like there's someone here? There's so much rustling going on, could it be a thief?"

Xu Dafu was still confused. He got up sleepily, lit the torch tremblingly, and then looked around carefully. However, he didn't find anything unusual except the shadowy trees and the pile of bricks.

Xu Dafu relaxed all of a sudden, took a long breath and said, "Okay, don't scare yourself. It's the middle of the night, there's no one around, go to bed early!"

The next day, as soon as it was light, Xu Dafu and Li couldn't wait to check around. They always felt that there seemed to be some bricks missing at the edge, but the number was not large. If you didn't look carefully, it would be difficult to find.

This made Xu Dafu and Li feel uneasy. They looked at each other in confusion: Was there something missing or not? Did they remember it wrong, or was it really stolen?

After a night of sleep, Li was still feeling anxious and restless, as if her heart was hanging in the air and could not find the ground. She said to Xu Ruyi, "Oh, my heart was in turmoil all night, I tossed and turned, and I really couldn't sleep well."

Xu Ruyi frowned and thought for a moment before saying, "Why don't you let my brother go? He can be the same person accompanying Grandpa."

In the evening, Xu Qinghe and Xu Dafu went to see bricks together.

It was the middle of the night and everything was silent. Xu Qinghe could vaguely hear a very subtle sound. His heart tightened and he gently woke up Xu Dafu. The two of them held their breath and tiptoed towards the direction where the sound came from.

Xu Dafu suddenly lit the torch, and a white figure suddenly appeared in front of them, looking like Bai Wuchang, which scared the two men almost to death.

Oh my god! Xu Dafu's eyes were as big as copper bells, and his eyeballs were about to fall out. Xu Qinghe was also frightened so much that his face turned pale, his legs went weak, and he almost collapsed to the ground.

Xu Dafu and Xu Qinghe were so frightened that they were stunned, as if they were cast under a spell. They stood there blankly, at a loss, and sweating profusely.

The two men stared at Bai Wuchang as if they were possessed by a demon, not daring to breathe.

Bai Wuchang didn't say anything either, he just turned around mechanically and then jumped away.

Xu Qinghe watched him leave, full of doubts, wondering: But why didn't he run to the west mountain? Why did he run to the village? Looking closely at his legs, they were touching the ground, not lifting off. Could it be that ghosts can fly?

Xu Qinghe suddenly realized something and said to Xu Dafu excitedly, "Grandpa, someone is just playing tricks. I'm going to catch up with him and see who is so bold."

After saying that, Xu Qinghe grabbed the torch from Xu Dafu's hand and chased him like an arrow, shouting, "Stop right there! Who are you? Don't run!"

When Xu Dafu saw Xu Qinghe chasing after him, he no longer cared about being afraid and gritted his teeth and followed him.

When Bai Wuchang heard Xu Qinghe's shout, he knew that he was exposed, so he stopped pretending and ran as fast as he could.

Xu Qinghe chased him while shouting at the top of his lungs, "Stop right there!"

Xu Qinghe ran very fast, like the wind. Bai Wuchang soon entered the village. Xu Qinghe also rushed into the village, shouting at the top of his voice: "Catch the ghost, catch the ghost!"
