Chapter 96 Death of S-Class

When Saitama's simple, ordinary, yet indestructible and terrifying fist finally landed on him, Elder Centipede's anxiety reached its peak. With no way to brake, Elder Centipede prepared to sacrifice his own body to save his own. At the moment of collision, he abandoned his massive form and ejected his most important Primarch, his old face.

Behind that old face was a string of thin nerve clusters. Although Elder Centipede's size might seem out of place, that was all acquired. The only part that truly belonged to him from the beginning was his head and those nerve clusters.

Its intuition, proven time and again, proved effective. The ejection and collapse occurred almost simultaneously. As soon as the Centipede Elder ejected its original form from its shell, its proudly robust frame was blasted into dust. Aside from two long legs that had been deeply embedded in the earth, the rest of its multi-kilometer-long body vanished in the blink of an eye.

Such an outrageous thing happening before his eyes scared Elder Centipede so much that he didn't dare to say a single harsh word after his original body flew out. He just wanted to take off and run away before Saitama turned around to look at him.

Damn it, just wait! This time, I'm the elder, and I admit defeat. Once I find a safe place to recover, I'll devour everyone in this city. If I can't defeat you, can't I just destroy your city? As long as I hide underground and don't confront you head-on, what can you do to me?

However, fate was obviously unwilling to let Elder Centipede go. Just as Elder Centipede was muttering with resentment, an old man with white eyebrows and hair, showing his old age but with sharp eyes like a falcon, suddenly jumped out from the ruins and easily blocked Elder Centipede's way.

"Flowing Water, Rock-Smashing Fist!" His palms joined together, fingers forming a blade, and he drew a smooth and swift arc through the air, like flowing water. Then, with all his accumulated kinetic energy, like sharp fangs, he pierced the Centipede Elder's head, which had just taken flight. Then, Bang tensed his arm, vibrating rapidly, transmitting an explosive force into the Centipede Elder's original form.

"Damn it, it was so close. I haven't taken revenge on 'Explosion' yet, I..." Elder Centipede's original body was already tottering under Bang's explosive fist. Knowing that he could not escape, Elder Centipede left behind his last words unwillingly.

"You don't stand a chance, Elder Centipede." Bangu pulled his arm out of Elder Centipede's body and struck him once more fiercely in the face. The combined force of the two explosions finally shattered Elder Centipede's body completely, sending large chunks of tissue and corrosive fluid scattering in a splattering pattern. It was a truly disgusting sight.

Bang dodged the corrosion marks on the ground, pounded his old waist which was burdened by something that shouldn't be the case at his age, and came to Saitama's side. Looking at the charred concave marks in front of Saitama that seemed to lead to the end of the world and were blasted out by the wind from his fists, he couldn't help but reveal an expression of amazement.

This power can be used to protect the world, which is a blessing for mankind and the world.

"Saitama-kun, when dealing with monsters, you can't be careless. They are very cunning and often escape in ways that are difficult for us to understand when they are about to die. So... eliminate all evil."

Bangu had originally wanted to say 'torn to pieces,' but the scene before him forced him to change his words. After all, Elder Centipede wasn't just torn to pieces; he'd practically vanished. If Elder Centipede hadn't suddenly seized upon his life and ejected his original form before being struck, he would have been completely dead after that blow.

"Grandpa, why are you here?" Saitama turned his head and smiled friendly at Bang.

It's not easy to make Saitama remember. All I can say is... there's no friendship without fighting.

Although it didn't hit Bang Gu solidly, it just brushed past him and hit the mountain behind him. Otherwise, Bang Gu wouldn't be standing now, but most likely lying down, whether in the hospital or in the grave, it depends on the situation.

Bang pounded his old waist, looked up at the storm overhead that had almost covered the entire abandoned city, and said, "With such a big commotion, everyone who can come nearby should be here. Saitama-kun, do you know what happened here?"

"Well, Kobayashi said there's a Monster Association down there with some very strong monsters in it, and she's trying to force those monsters out." Saitama said honestly.

Bangu paused in pounding his waist, and his expression instantly became serious.

Saitama might not know it, but Bang is well aware of Elder Centipede's immense power as a monster. This Dragon-level monster had once been severely injured by the Hero Association's top-ranked legendary superhero, Blast, but survived. The fact that he survived Blast's hand alone sets him apart from other ordinary monsters.

Anyway, Bangu felt that if he were to fight Elder Centipede, he could at best only ensure that he would not be killed by Elder Centipede. As for stopping Elder Centipede's progress or even killing him, he would be powerless even if he wanted to.

Such a terrifying monster would actually willingly join a monster organization. The other monsters in that monster organization must also be extremely dangerous, at least there should be monsters of the same level as the Centipede Elder. Just one Centipede Elder has the ability to destroy a large city. If there are multiple monsters like that, it would be a plot that only appears in disaster movies.

Fortunately, Elder Centipede died here. This giant beast is the biggest threat to the city. Perhaps its lethality to the heroes themselves is not very strong, but if they set their sights on ordinary citizens and city buildings, with their huge size, as long as they enter the city, they will inevitably cause huge casualties and economic losses.

Humanity today has just recovered from the era when monsters wreaked havoc, but it can no longer withstand much more turmoil like this.

"That little girl... Miss Lin, how did she know that the Monster Association was hiding under City Z? Also, how is she going to force those monsters out? Where is she now?"

"Well, I heard from Xiaolin that it was Hammer who told her. Hammer died while investigating the Monster Association." Saitama was straightforward, but he wasn't stupid. He knew what to reveal and when not to reveal. For example, the fact that Hammer was actually Hayashi Maki's own creation was best known to as few people as possible.

"What!!"

Compared to Elder Centipede joining the Monster Association, the news of Wildhammer's death had a more obvious impact on Bang.

Being a registered hero is a risky profession, requiring you to face monsters and engage in real-life combat, resulting in a consistently high casualty rate. If it weren't for the abundance of talented individuals among humans, who consistently find young people with a sense of justice and passion to join the ranks of heroes, this system would likely have collapsed long ago due to its unsustainability.

However, the high casualty and turnover rates mentioned here primarily refer to the lower-tier heroes. C- and B-tier heroes are perpetually understaffed, so much so that the Hero Association is forced to use unlicensed knights, ordinary individuals with little combat power, as role models to encourage them, hoping to attract more fresh blood to the registered hero system. However, the upper echelons of the hero system, whether A- or S-tier, have relatively stable membership.

A-class heroes act like tranquilizers in cities; their presence signifies that the city remains in normal order, untouched by monsters. S-class heroes, on the other hand, serve as more of a spiritual symbol; monsters worthy of S-class action are often extremely difficult to defeat. By the time an S-class hero enters the scene, the surrounding area has generally been evacuated, as there are few onlookers. While S-class heroes may not even be as famous as the higher-ranking A-class heroes, no one can deny that S-class heroes are the cornerstone of human stability. If it weren't for the S-class heroes who stood at the forefront, holding off the most dangerous and powerful monsters, humanity would likely have been wiped out by monsters by now.

Since the founding of the Hero Association and the maturation of the hero system, while the number of A-class heroes has fluctuated, the number of S-class heroes has consistently increased. This is because no S-class has ever been killed in battle with monsters! Even if Wildhammer is only the last among the S-class, the least experienced, or even perhaps had some backdoors used by City Z during the evaluation, as soon as the results are announced, Wildhammer's status as an S-class hero is confirmed. The public doesn't care how Wildhammer got his S-class status; he is recognized and even somewhat deified as an S-class hero.

The death of an S-Class not only weakens humanity as a whole, but also severely damages the confidence of all humanity. People will realize that even S-Class are not invincible. They are just ordinary people with stronger powers, and they are not invincible in battles against monsters. If they are killed, they will die.

For human society, which has blindly trusted and even worshipped S-class heroes, this incident might have some positive implications. However, the negative impact is equally enormous and far-reaching, so whether and when to announce Wildhammer's death requires careful consideration.

In fact, this would become a secret, passed down only to a select few, not even to the Hero Association. While the Hero Association nominally protected humanity, its internal structure was too complex, its interests intertwined and intricate, impossible to untangle. Bang even suspected that if he told the Hero Association about Wildhammer's death now, the newspapers would print extra copies that afternoon, spreading the news of Wildhammer's death to the entire world. After all, the newspaper owner was also a shareholder in the Hero Association.

"Saitama-kun, please don't reveal the truth about the Hammer to anyone else." Bang was still a little worried about Saitama, so he reminded him.
