Chapter 49 World Features: Limiter Theory
Lin Zhenxi was also interested in Kinos's research, but it was only at the stage of interest, and she didn't have much desire to make it her own. She had many magical experiments and didn't have the energy to open up a completely scientific discipline or study genetic modification technology.
After all, she was a witch, a complete magician. She pursued personal self-realization, not understanding the world through analysis. She was confident that she was on the right path and there was no need to take any further detours.
Her only concern was the sudden spiritual power the Lion King had gained during his outburst. She checked Kinos's memories to understand how he had achieved this.
But unexpectedly, there was a huge surprise hidden in Kinos's memory, which caught Lin Zhenxi off guard.
That is the characteristic of this world, the "mystery" of the birth and power of monsters.
Limiter theory.
For some time, Hayashi Maki had been baffled by how the people of this world could unleash such strength beyond the limits of the human body. They possessed no special mystical amplification, and how could their muscles and bones, with their strength, possibly surpass steel and concrete? Forget those powerful heroes on TV who spun alloy steel into balls—those seemed a bit far-fetched. But Saitama was always by Hayashi Maki's side. Where did Saitama's unassuming yet terrifying strength come from? This was the question Hayashi had been trying to understand. However, she had no clues and no idea where to begin.
And now, in Kinos's memory, Lin Zhenxi seemed to see the answer.
It turns out that Genos had discovered Saitama's extraordinary qualities long ago. Saitama's extraordinary abilities and the seemingly simple source of his power fascinated Genos. To facilitate his research, he even secretly arranged for Saitama to live in a deserted city, allowing the impoverished Saitama to rent a fully functional house with running water and electricity in a remote area, just so he could study the reason behind Saitama's growing power.
Seeing this, Lin Maki was shocked. It turns out that Saitama’s landlord is you!
Genos's attack on Mosquito Girl was also orchestrated specifically for Saitama. The intention to massacre City Z was merely a false memory he instilled in Mosquito Girl. His real purpose was to test Saitama's physical weaknesses. Saitama had only demonstrated physical strength, without any other special powers. Genos wanted to know how this superhuman could withstand the countless threatening microscopic entities, or if he even had the ability to do so.
A deeper consideration was that Genos was terrified of Saitama's abilities. Whenever he observed Saitama's strength, he felt like he was not looking at a person, but a mountain, an ocean, or even a walking god.
Despite their fear, the reaction of these leading scientists upon encountering a mortal god was definitely not to bow down in worship. Instead, they sought to understand, study, replicate, and even become him. Genos used Mosquito Girl to contact Saitama, hoping to discover his weaknesses. He wanted to defeat him, control him, and bring him to the lab, turning him into research material and knowledge within his own mind.
Then, the swarm of mosquitoes, and Genos's hope of defeating Saitama, were burned out by the intrusive Lin Zhenxi. The moment the fire started, Genos felt extremely frustrated.
As mentioned before, despite the impressive technological advancements, the House of Evolution's financial situation is far from perfect. Supporting such a large group of voracious freaks, with no other means of generating revenue, the entire House of Evolution relies entirely on patents from Kinos's past papers, which is a stretch. This horde of ants has already consumed the House of Evolution's entire recent budget. The original plan was to at least produce some results, if not a single success, but it's completely wasted, a complete loss.
Without this batch of mosquitoes, the House of Evolution no longer had the ability to train a mosquito girl and a mosquito swarm of the same size. Even daily maintenance became a problem. Ultimately, this weird organization was entirely Genos's love. He pursued the ultimate perfect life, and the creation of such a weird organization was actually unintentional.
Sensing his organization's end, Genos decided to go all out, sending out all his most gluttonous monsters... not the strongest, but the ones most aggressive at eating. He knew Saitama's strength, but kept it a secret from the monsters, intent on consuming them all. Of course, he also had a backup plan: a monster named "Earth Dragon," who would leave obvious clues to lure Saitama to his base for a head-to-head showdown with his most powerful genetically engineered creation.
However, Lin Zhenxi recalled that she had never seen the weirdo named "Tulong" and didn't know where he had gone to. However, Iron Gorilla perfectly replaced the job of "Tulong" and became the guide, bringing Saitama and Lin Zhenxi to the base.
However, in Genos's plan, Saitama should have been the only one arriving at the base. Genos simply intended to abandon the base and start anew, not to abandon himself. The addition of Hayashi Maki and Iron Gorilla became unstable variables that needed to be eliminated.
If Saitama had come alone, Genos would have immediately opened the base's gates and let Saitama in to confront the culmination of his scientific research, the "Asura Rhinoceros Beetle." But since Hayashi Maki and Iron Gorilla had also arrived, he had no choice but to activate the base's autonomous defense system to exclude these two uninvited guests, or at least separate them from Saitama. Only then could he obtain the data he sought.
Everyone knows what happened next. Kinos had never imagined that someone could find his true body based on a loud speaker. Even his consciousness transfer method was ineffective. Lin Zhenxi directly pulled his soul out of his body and pressed it into the Pensieve to rinse it thoroughly, revealing everything.
Now let’s go back to the “Limiter Theory” at the beginning, which Lin Zhenxi believes is the most valuable project among Kinos’ massive research results.
According to Kinos's research, due to the differences in strength between species and individuals, the creatures in this world have limits that cannot be eliminated no matter how hard they try.
Lin Zhenxi strongly agrees with this point. She thinks that the abilities of the heroes and monsters in this world are outrageous because she also thinks so.
Here's the key point. Kinos believes that the purpose of biological limits is to allow organisms to grow within the boundaries of their species' survival consciousness and rationality. This growth limit is called a limiter. Different organisms and individuals have different limiters. Some exceptionally gifted individuals have limiters that are extremely broad, even exceeding the limits of the human species. Therefore, they possess immense talents, which require training to become superhumans.
This is the case with the heroes who are called the chosen ones of heaven.
When organisms are transformed into monsters due to various external factors—such as their own strong desire for change, the influence of the natural environment, or scientific transformation—they are like replacing their original limiters with higher ones. This allows them to surpass their previous limits and easily become stronger than before. However, this process is often accompanied by a change in form, even from one species to another. This is called monsterization.
Saitama, however, is a very special being. He possesses no special energy, no special form changes, and no special training. So, theoretically, he should be just an ordinary person, at most, someone who works out regularly and maintains a strong body. However, Saitama's current strength is completely inconsistent with his experience. It's as if the "limiter" doesn't exist in him. His strength knows no bounds, and he easily surpasses all creatures in this world, reaching an incomparably terrifying level.
Therefore, Genos believes that Saitama doesn't possess an infinite "limiter," but rather, quite the opposite: his "limiter" is actually quite small, perhaps even smaller than that of an average person. However, through various experiences, he has broken through his "limiter," thus gaining unlimited growth potential, becoming infinitely stronger, and ultimately achieving his current one-punch invincibility. The goal of his research is to replicate Saitama's growth process and create an invincible being.
Judging by the results, he seemed to have succeeded, but in reality, he knew he had failed. He had indeed created a monster that could constantly replace its cells under the infusion of energy, constantly pushing its biological limits. However, while its strength was unlimited, the speed of energy transmission was limited. Once the energy required by the monster exceeded the maximum energy transmission limit, the super-strengthened cells that made up its body would lose their energy supply and would quickly disintegrate and dissolve at an extremely fast rate.
Now, this false "infinity" is about to engage in a fateful showdown with true "invincibility." Does "invincibility" have a limit, and is this limit higher than "infinity"? The answers to all these questions will soon be revealed.
