Witch Special
Chapter 24: Summoning Familiars: The Song of Six Pence
Lin Zhenxi's luck this time...it was hard to say whether it was good or bad. She had originally planned to fly to the edge of the city as fast as she could, then wait and see if the white figure would appear, thus confirming whether it was actually the city's local hero.
Then she realized that even with her broom at full speed, she still couldn't catch up to the white figure. Her current speed must have been around 500 kilometers per hour, no slower than some small planes, but by the time she reached the edge of the city, she was so far behind that she couldn't even see its back. If it weren't for the obvious mark left on the grass outside the city, where an object had fallen at high speed, she wouldn't even be able to confirm whether the white figure had left the city.
The person running on the ground is faster than Lin Zhenxi flying in the sky. Is there anything more outrageous than this?
Although he didn't catch the white figure, Lin Zhenxi did get the information he wanted most: the white figure was indeed a superhero from another city. He must have learned through his own information channels that a giant monster threatening humanity had appeared in this city, so he rushed here specifically. After finishing his work, he went home in one go, without any delay, which was very handsome.
But how should she chase him now? At best, she knew the general direction he was heading. With just this little clue, the chances of finding him were slim.
So, just give up? Lin Zhenxi hovered in mid-air, her flying broomstick in hand. She turned back to look at the city behind her, now stained crimson by the massive monster explosion. If she went back now, she'd surely find a way to blend in. But what then? If she encountered another horrific disaster of that magnitude, would she, already a part of the city, be able to just walk away so carefreely as she did now?
Lin Zhenxi believed she had many opportunities in this world. Given her versatility, she could easily thrive there if she chose. However, this also required a crucial prerequisite: she had to establish a firm foothold in the world. To put it more simply, she needed to find a strong supporter to cling to, so she wouldn't be killed by a monster before she even developed enough strength.
After hovering in place for a moment, Lin Zhenxi made his own decision.
There is no other way. The other person is so fast that I definitely can’t catch up with him now. I have to find another way.
With this thought, Lin Zhenxi cast aside the broom and leaped from the sky. After free-falling for a distance, just before landing, Lin Zhenxi cast a "Light as a Feather" spell on herself. Under the influence of the Light Feather spell, she landed lightly on the long-untended dirt road on the outskirts of the city. The magic broom flew over, but before it could land, Lin Zhenxi broke it into two parts and stuffed it into the space cube.
Lin Zhenxi knew that relying solely on her own abilities would be impossible to catch up with the white hero, so she decided to seek help. Witches are not good at fighting alone, and if Lin Zhenxi only used her own strength, she would not be able to go this far on this path.
After tamping and solidifying the soil beneath his feet, Lin Zhenxi began to draw a magic circle to summon a familiar on the flat, solid surface. Yanyan landed on the ground, which was now so clean it almost reflected the light, and quietly watched Lin Zhenxi busy himself, wagging his tail.
Thanks to his solid foundation, Lin Zhenxi quickly completed the magic circle that summoned the familiar he needed. Using his wand as a guide, he poured approximately twenty illumination spells of magic power into the magic circle's reservoir. Then, Lin Zhenxi cleared his throat and, somewhat unnaturally, chanted, "Twenty-four blackbirds, baked into a pie. Once the pie is opened, the birds will sing."
The magic circle activated by the spell and magic power lit up. After a flash of white light, a small and exquisite wooden square box appeared in the center of the magic circle, which indicated that Lin Zhenxi had successfully summoned the familiar he needed.
Yanyan, who had been waiting nearby, raised his pitch-black cat paws and slapped open the lid of the box. A series of black and gray shadows rushed out of the box and began to fly all over the sky, so fast that they could not be seen by the human eye.
"Line up, stand still, and count, meow." Yanyan stood on his hind legs, put his hands on his hips, and roared with great momentum.
The next second, the gray shadows in the sky fell to the ground, neatly arranged in two rows, and began to count one, two, three, and four with their beaks open.
There are a total of twenty-four gray birds. This is Hayashi Maki's "Summoning Familiar: Song of Sixpence", her most commonly used reconnaissance familiar.
Their flying speed is extremely fast, far beyond the dynamic vision limit of the human eye, so managing these twenty-four cheerful little birds has never been Lin Zhenxi's responsibility, but Yanyan has done it for him.
Furthermore, their bodies are actually chocolate, and the small wooden box is also a box for chocolate. To be more precise, only by using the wooden chocolate box as a medium can a contract be signed with these chocolate gray birds. Once the contract is successfully signed, the chocolate box will be taken back to their own world by the gray birds as a reward. When Lin Zhenxi is hungry and has no food on hand, he will eat the gray birds as if they are chocolate. Although he will replenish it afterward, it still makes Yanyan feel a little dissatisfied. It is not clear whether he is unhappy that Lin Zhenxi ate his subordinates, or that cats cannot eat chocolate.
After all 24 grey jays finished counting, Yanyan stepped aside to let Lin Zhenxi speak. Seeing Lin Zhenxi approaching, the flock of grey jays started a small commotion. All of them shrank their necks and moved closer together, huddling together.
Yanyan is their boss, so they obey him. But Lin Zhenxi is a demon who will eat them, and they are now terrified.
Seeing that she had left such a bad impression on her familiar, Lin Zhenxi felt a little embarrassed. She coughed and said, "Enough of the nonsense. Follow the direction of my finger and look for a bald man in white clothes. That's it, go ahead."
After saying this, Lin Zhenxi pulled out a round mirror with a stand and placed it in front of the Gray Jade Birds. This was a magic mirror that could conveniently display the user's memories to others through visuals. The magic mirror was currently showing two moments when Lin Zhenxi personally witnessed the white shadow superhero.
Twenty-four heads huddled together in front of the magic mirror, and the gray birds carefully read the contents several times. Then they spread their wings, took off on the spot, and disappeared without a trace.
Although the Grey Jaguar birds lack direct combat capabilities, their intelligence gathering abilities are quite reliable. So far, it seems there hasn't been anyone they haven't been able to find.
All we have to do now is wait for the results.
Before Lin Zhenxi could decide what to do next, she heard the roar of an engine in the distance. Then, a heavy motorcycle with a black demonic skull dangling from its front came barreling towards her from the city. As it neared her, it did a wide drift and stopped right beside her.
Lin Zhenxi glanced at the familiar summoning magic circle that was flattened by the motorcycle's wheels, and thought that it saved her the trouble of erasing the magic circle herself.
But then, when she saw the appearance of the person who came, she gasped in shock.
What…is…this thing?
The man lifted his legs and tumbled down from the cart, then stood before Lin Zhenxi, his hands on his waist. He was a burly man about two meters tall, his muscles bulging. The thighs of those so-called musclemen in action movies might not even be as thick as the arms of this towering brute. Even the most stubborn jerk would become as docile as a lamb if he were hit by a slap that could tear his head off.
Hayashi Maki had seen macho men before, and there were countless "artists" in this world who adored body painting, painting their skin like it had just been rolled through a bucket of paint. But to see someone this tall and strong, with a heavily armored tank covered in spikes painted in white oil paint on his dark skin, and most importantly, without any clothes, was truly an eye-opener for her.
Oh no, it’s not that he’s completely naked. At least this guy’s lower body is wrapped with a loincloth, which barely covers his lower body. So he’s not completely naked.
Although the nature is similar.
Muscular men are not within Lin Zhenxi's interest range at all, especially this kind of pervert who has trained himself to the point where he has lost his human form and is just a muscle monster. He has even touched Lin Zhenxi's sensitive nerve of disgust, making her feel a little disgusted.
"!@¥!@¥" The muscular man stood in front of Lin Zhenxi like an iron tower, opening and closing his mouth and saying a series of mysterious sounds that Lin Zhenxi could not understand at all.
Lin Zhenxi had just arrived when she was attacked by the giant monster, and she hadn't had time to learn the language and writing of this world. So she had no idea what the muscular man was saying.
Language barriers can be a big problem. Many conflicts start out as misunderstandings and could be easily resolved with good communication.
Seeing Lin Zhenxi's bewildered expression, the dark, burly man looked a little impatient. He had obviously not considered the possibility of a language barrier, but simply assumed that Lin Zhenxi didn't understand what he was saying.
So he raised his hand, pointed at the city behind him, and continued to talk a lot.
Lin Zhenxi was about to leave. The most urgent task now was to collect the language and writing of this world; this was the most basic prerequisite for integration. The muscular man before him was clearly no pushover. In this dangerous world of heroes and eccentrics, Lin Zhenxi would be more cautious targeting ordinary, less dangerous individuals.
